❤️ BRAVEHEART ❤️

Braveheart for July is awarded to Althea who belongs to Paula one of our RVNs. She came in to the practice displaying signs of lethargy, pyrexia (a high temperature) and inappetence. After being assessed by one of our vets it was decided that Althea should be taken to our out of hours provider PETS to provide the intense care that she needed. Whilst there she started to display neurological signs and was deemed poorly enough to require transferring to The Royal College Of Veterinary Surgeons Queen Mother Hospital in London. She remained in there care for several days under close monitoring.

She was then discharged for Paula to continue her care at home and visited us for blood tests following her treatment and we can now say she is slowly on the mend.

When your pet is treated at our practice there are sometimes situations where your pet will need to be transferred to our out of hours provider or to a referral practice for further care. We work closely with other practices to make sure this is a smooth transition for all involved.

Paula is pictured here with the gorgeous Althea.

Taking a blood pressure reading for a cat or dog is very similar to when you have your own taken.

A small cuff will be placed around your pet’s leg or tail and depending on the type of machine used, the cuff will be inflated and deflated to determine the blood pressure reading.

It does not take long, does not hurt and pets rarely object. 🐾

Imagine you are deaf. You can’t hear your smoke alarm or alarm clock. You can’t hear your text messages. You miss out on social interactions. That’s what life is like for deaf people, and it can be very isolating. A hearing dog can make a big difference. You can help our charity of the year – Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – help a deaf person leave loneliness behind, by adding a donation via Pennies when you pay by card. Just a small donation can help deaf people escape isolation and reconnect with life. Thank you. 🐾

Its National Check the Chip day! 🐶🐱

Did you know that there is a large percent of dogs and cats in the UK that are microchipped, but that the information stored on the chip is out of date or incorrect. This tends to be people who have changed address, changed mobile numbers or people who have adopted pets and not changed the chip details from the previous owners.

Or in rare cases, the microchip can become dislodged leaving your pet with no chip at all! 😲

We recommend checking your chip information yearly to ensure that this crucial tool can be utilised when needed. If you would like to check yours, please contact us on 01444 233472 to be given the chip number or to arrange an appointment for your pet to be scanned.

☀Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous. If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.☀

- Has your cat started yowling in the middle of the night?
- Have they stopped coming to find you?
- Are they just not themselves anymore?

These changes are often mistaken as just symptoms of old age.
But they could be signs of high blood pressure. 🐱🐾

Call the practice today on 01444 233472 to book a blood pressure check for your cat.

What's your dogs favourite thing? A cheeky treat? Enrichment toys? A big run? Comment below to let us know! 🐕

We know that a lot of dogs can be real foodies and enjoy a cheeky snack, but have you tried using a licky mat as an enrichment activity? The mat has lots of grooves and holes to squish food into, enabling your dog to lick and nibble their favourite delicious snacks creating an enriching activity. This can also be a helpful slow feeding technique for those speed eaters!

Here is a photo of a silicone treat mat that we sell here 🤩

🐕Healthy Pet Club🐈

Willow joined us recently to have a dental. As a member of The Healthy Pet Club, she benefited from a fixed price dental of £250 for a scale and polish and assessment of her mouth.
Dental hygiene is very important, and starting to brush your dogs' teeth when they are young can significantly reduce the need for a dental or for extractions later in life.
If you think your dog (or cat! 🐱) may need a dental please give the practice a call to arrange a pre operative check with one of our veterinary surgeons who will be happy to provide an estimate for you.

Willow was so well behaved all day and enjoyed lots of cuddles from everyone! Well done Willow!

Honey visited the practice last week as her owner noticed her yelping in pain when she was out on a walk. She called straight away and bought her down for an emergency appointment. Our Head Vet Phillip quickly ascertained that Honey had a grass seed down her ear canal that was causing her immense pain. He tried removing it in consultation with help from Chloe, one of our patient care assistants but it was far to painful for her. It was decided that Honey would be admitted to the hospital and she would have sedation so we could remove it safely and pain free. Honey was a very brave girl whilst being a with us and received lots of fuss whilst waiting for her procedure. Once asleep we managed to remove the culprit, a big grass seed!
Honey was awake not long after and her owner came to collect her with Honey leaving a lot happier than when she arrived.

🎁🎈Happy Birthday to all rescue dogs whose birthdays are unknown! 🥳🎂

The North Shore Animal League America (the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption centre), declared the 1st of August as a birthday for all the shelter animals whose birthdays are unknown. It is now recognised nationally and gives us a date to celebrate all these wonderful pets! 🩷

We have been lucky enough to provide care to a range of beautiful wildlife over the years. This baby mouse was brought in to someone's house by their cat and had sustained a injury on its back. Thankfully one of our nurses took the mouse home and fed it 2 hourly overnight until he was stable enough to go off to the rescue centre. He was later released after making a full recovery. 🐭

We will always treat and care for our wonderful wildlife when its required, however sometimes we receive baby birds and other animals which would of been better without human intervention. Therefore, we ask that if you are concerned about a wild animal to contact us prior to bring them in, to enable us to advise you on the best course of action.

You can contact us on 01444 233472.

The discount applies to dogs, cats, and rabbits who are on the scheme.
Pictured is Stella waiting patiently in her kennel and the second picture when she came in for her first post operative check. These checks are included in the price of neutering.

Really good information shared by the PDSA 🐾

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language ⚠️

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite.

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder 🚦

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the same order.

Find out more: http://pdsa.me/rfce

[Visual description: An infographic explaining Kendal Shepherd’s ladder of communication and how to recognise stress in dogs by the signs they show in their body language. This is a traffic light system with red signals being the worst. Green signals are: Yawning, blinking, nose licking and turning their head away. Yellow signals are: Sitting and turning their body away, walking away, creeping and having their ears back. Orange signals are: Standing crouched, tail tucked, lying down with their belly exposed in a submissive way, stiffening up and staring. Red signals are: Growling, snapping and biting.]
