Zeb and Zeus are beginning to embrace their kitten life. They have begun to trust and show a sense of acceptance now. It’s so heartwarming and quite a relief!

Zeb is very athletic, a high jumper, springing from the ground like a c**t, while Zeus likes chasing toys with paws a bit closer to the ground. In addition to being funny and fun brothers, they’re both as sweet as can be with magnetizing eyes.

Levi had his neuter procedure last week and has recovered nicely. We’ve noticed that many of the kittens, once neutered, become more relaxed versus being a bit agitated and playing aggressively.

Neutering felines lowers risks of reproductive cancers and infections, reduces aggression, yowling and urine spraying… to name a few.

As we navigate Kitten Season, let’s work together to reduce suffering and create a healthier future for our feline friends. And a reminder to schedule these procedures well ahead of time as many veterinary offices are booked months into the future.

Meet Zeus, Zeb, and Zelie who arrived at Nahimana Kittens today!

These three siblings (two boys and a girl) came from a growing stray community at the home of a caring, cat-loving elderly woman. As she transitions to a new home, her family is working overtime trying to find homes for the many feline friends that had found their way there. Though most had been trapped and neutered, one little lady among them found herself a mother of 5 before her number was called. A great reminder to spay/neuter through local TNR organizations, like our local Craven/Pamlico TNR Project!

This little Z Tribe has been receiving a lot of love, in between discovering their new environment and toys. Their vet visit will follow very soon - stay tuned!

Remember sweet Ziggy and shy Lucy?! (Now Dani and Binx) Look at them now! We waited a little over a year for these two to be adopted as a pair, and they’ve been living their best lives ever since! We love and appreciate all the updates on how Lucy likes to watch basketball on TV and says “hi” and “hello” through her precious meows, and Ziggy is still a loving, affectionate cat who receives all he gives from his amazing cat mom and dad. We’re so happy for the whole family!

He’ll have his neuter procedure this week and will be ready for his forever family shortly thereafter.

He thrives on presence and at least one other feline companion to support his very social, friendly, playful and loving personality.

Adoption Day for Copper and Nanuk! 🧡🎉🧡

These handsome and very sweet brothers are being scooped up by Sean’s nephew and his wife. Sean is kindly transferring them to meet in Virginia this morning as I write this, where they will continue their journey to their forever home in Massachusetts!

We wish them all the love, care and attention they deserve and will no doubt receive.

Flashback Caturday!!
We often get asked how our rescues come to us, so we thought today we’d share just a few of our kittens, now older in their forever homes. I’ll use their names from when they were with Nahimana.
Char and Trinity (after spay surgery) were born here - part of a litter of six - after we trapped their pregnant mom, Ember. When born, they’re legs were tightly tangled in their umbilical cords resulting in Char having a slightly deformed foot and Trinity missing one of hers. Now in their loving home, both are doing amazingly well and Trinity didn’t require an amputation, her leg has healed nicely!
Next, Ivy (beautiful tabby)was a lone, tiny kitten, heard crying from underneath the bleachers at a local high school football field. It took many days, but we finally trapped and socialized her. She thrives in her home with an amazing family that includes a “sister” who was adopted from us a year earlier.
Sylvie (black&white beauty) came to us from Animal Control as a stray, extremely underweight and with five tiny kittens in tow. They were covered in red clay from under the house where they had been taking shelter. She’s now very loved and healthy.
Churro (brought to us as a stray kitten looking for food) and Nutkin (brought to us as a pregnant stray). Nutkin played surrogate to many kittens who found their way to us long after her kittens had been adopted. Churro bonded with her immediately and they now live together with their loving family.
They’re all where they deserve to be - with loving, caring people who take responsibility for their commitment to their pets as a part of their families.

Nahimana Forest Animal Sanctuary

We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization in the state of North Carolina, dedicated to serving the needs of abandoned/neglected animals. Though our initial focus is rescuing and providing adoptive services for kittens, our future expansion will allow us to work with other domesticated and, some, farm animals. Additionally, we maintain a Certified Wildlife Habitat on our 22 acres of forest land.

Because we are all connected at the deeper part of our existence, our service for animals and the land stems from our messages of the worthiness of all living creatures and ways in which we are bound together. We complete the circle of this sanctuary as licensed foster parents for girls who have experienced neglect, by providing the opportunity for shared healing, respect, and responsibilities for, and with, animals and nature.
