I want to share an important lesson while working with Georgie, my client's adorable Sheltie. You see, ignoring bad behavior doesn’t make it disappear; in fact, it can lead to dangerous situations! 🚗💥 Georgie used to get anxious in the car, and when that happened, he would jump from the back seat right onto the driver’s side floorboard. Just think about the chaos that could cause while driving! 😳 That’s why it’s vital to address these behaviors head-on instead of turning a blind eye. Clear communication and setting expectations with our dogs are essential to nurturing positive behavior. To truly overcome these challenges, we must engage with them, not shy away from them. If you’re facing similar issues with your furry friend, I’m here to help you understand and connect better. I wanted to share a recent training session with Georgie, my client Miller's Sheltie, where we explored his perception of the micro educator E-collar. In this session, I gradually increased the collar’s intensity one level at a time, observing Georgie’s responses to determine when he perceives the sensation. It’s crucial to align the pressure we use with our dog’s state of mind. For instance, if a dog is calm and relaxed in a low-distraction environment, there’s no need to apply high intensity through a leash or E-collar. When dogs become fluent in the language of leash pressure during training, they learn several important concepts:1. When they feel pressure on the leash, they should move towards it rather than pull away.2. They can immediately relieve that pressure by complying with our requests.3. The intensity of the pressure must match the context of the situation.Unfortunately, I often witness well-meaning dog owners and trainers misusing these tools by applying unnecessary excessive pressure. This leads to unnecessary conflict and stress for both the dog and owner, ultimately hindering effective communication. Properly understanding pressure is essential for building a clear communication system with your dog.Much like a person starting a weight training regimen, dogs must experience a certain level of stress to grow. While this may be uncomfortable at times, it’s through tolerating this discomfort that we achieve growth and resilience. Dog training parallels this experience—many challenges arise from a misunderstanding of how pressure operates as a communication tool between you and your dog. Whether it’s spatial pressure, leash pressure, or E-collar pressure, it’s vital for both the owner and the dog to be on the same page, demonstrating fluency in their communication.Training should be enjoyable and fair. Only after our dogs grasp these concepts can we introduce them to more complex scenarios and go after behavioral challenges, which may r
**Why Teaching “Leave It” is Essential for Dogs:**1. **Safety First:** The “leave it” command can prevent your dog from picking up harmful objects, such as toxic plants, sharp items, or food that could cause digestive issues. This skill can be life-saving in emergency situations.2. **Avoiding Distractions:** Dogs are curious creatures and can easily get distracted by sights, sounds, or smells. Teaching them to “leave it” helps them stay focused, especially in busy environments or around other animals.3. **Enhanced Control:** This command gives you control over your dog’s behavior, allowing you to redirect their attention when necessary. It fosters better communication and strengthens the bond between you and your dog.4. **Preventing Unwanted Behavior:** “Leave it” can help deter aggressive behaviors towards other animals or people, keeping both your dog and others safe in social settings.5. **Building Impulse Control:** Teaching your dog to “leave it” encourages patience and self-control, essential traits for well-behaved pets.**Ready to help your dog learn this life-saving command?** If you have questions about enrolling in my Dog Training program, feel free to reach out! **Field Trip Adventures: Bobo and Lila's First Outing!**Today was a milestone for Bobo and Lila as they embarked on their very first field trip! Their mom, Cristina, has been dedicated to addressing the reactivity and anxiety issues that have been challenging for them. With her hard work and the implementation of new training protocols, they’ve made remarkable progress. We took the pups out into a bustling environment filled with heavy foot traffic, a variety of distractions, and an array of enticing sights, sounds, and smells. I’m thrilled to report that Bobo and Lila did not disappoint! They demonstrated an impressive ability to tune out the chaos and treat it all as background noise, showcasing their newfound confidence.Establishing a solid foundation in the relationship between a dog and their handler is crucial. Without this, teaching dogs how to navigate our human-centric world can be quite challenging, especially when it comes to guiding them through poor choices. However, with the right training approach, overcoming behavioral challenges becomes possible, leading to clearer communication, mutual respect, a deeper bond, and greater freedom for our furry friends.I’m incredibly proud of Cristina for her unwavering commitment and the progress Bobo and Lila have made. Stay tuned for more updates on their training journey as they continue to grow and thrive! 🐾✨ #dogtraining #obediencetraining #austindogs #dogbehavior

📢 Pupdate on Huey's resource guarding in the crate! It's been approximately 2 weeks since we started addressing this issue and he's definitely making a lot of improvement! Check out the day 1 video compared to today's! 🐾 Training a dog with resource guarding issues requires a balanced approach! While positive reinforcement is essential, it’s not always enough on its own. Dogs that guard resources often learn that aggression can be rewarding, making it crucial to incorporate accountability, discipline, and clear expectations into the training process. Simply bribing them with treats or affection or attempting to ignore the issue will not change their behavior and it could even lead to dangerous situations if they feel the need to escalate their warnings. For the safety of both you and your furry friend, it’s important to seek a trainer who understands how to blend positive reinforcement with balanced training techniques. This combination can help your dog learn that calm behavior is more rewarding than guarding, providing them the best chance for positive change! #dogtraining #austindogs #dogsof512 #dogmom #resourceguarding #austindogtrainer
🐕The Four Combinations of E-Collar Training: A Path to Lasting Obedience..... 🐕 In the world of dog training, especially when employing the ecollar, understanding the nuances of reinforcement is crucial. In my dog training program I present a structured approach to behavior modification through four specific combinations. This systematic method, combined with an intermittent schedule of reinforcement, plays a pivotal role in making obedience behaviors more resistant to extinction. This strategy involves rewarding the dog inconsistently rather than every time it performs the desired behavior. Such a method may seem counterintuitive at first; however, it is grounded in behavioral psychology. When a behavior is reinforced on an intermittent schedule, it becomes more entrenched and resistant to extinction. The unpredictability of rewards creates a stronger motivation (this is also why people get addicted to playing slot machine) for the dog to continue performing the behavior, as the dog learns that even if a reward is not given every time, it may be received at any moment. This unpredictability fosters persistence in the dog’s behavior, as they are driven by the potential for a reward. Consequently, the dog remains engaged and motivated to obey commands, even in the absence of immediate reinforcement. Over time, this leads to more reliable obedience, as the dog becomes conditioned to expect that compliance will yield rewards, making the behavior difficult to extinguish. By teaching this to my clients (in person and in my online program on Vimeo) my clients can create a robust system that fosters lasting obedience. The interplay between rewards and corrections, combined with the unpredictability of reinforcement, strengthens the dog’s understanding of commands and expectations. This approach not only cultivates reliable behavior but also enhances the bond between trainer and dog, paving the way for successful and enduring training outcomes. Want to learn more?
