Hi All
The Federal AHAA AGM was held today and it was good to see a good turnout.
Although NSW motion on membership was defended, the similar motion put up by Margaret Carla was successful which is great news for members!
This means that as 1 January 2025, if you do not breed, you can elect to be either a full member or associated member and the icing of the cake is the association membership will only be 60% of full membership fees.
Our amnesty motion was successful so watch this space for more details!

Hi All
The NSW AHAA Branch has submitted another motion for an amnesty on horses for AHAA registration. So please attend the AHAA Federal Council AGM on 22 June to vote!
Motion: To hold a 12 month amnesty for AHAA registerable horses in Australia.
Introduction:
This motion considers the declining membership of AHAA nationally and introduces the opportunity to increase membership and studbook registration of horses that could be registered but are not.
By continual improvement of AHAA services, membership benefits and competition opportunities, the new membership could be encouraged to continue to remain with AHAA in the years beyond the amnesty.
It is proposed that the amnesty would require interested persons to join AHAA and then be able to register eligible horses, without penalty or additional fees from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025.
It would be agreed that current registration rules apply to all the AHAA registration categories and:
1. All horses applying must be DNA tested regardless if they have been DNA’d with other associations/ANCEE.
Note: this is not to be considered an avenue to try to prove breeding or heritage of a horse, only to confirm who the horse is.
2. Membership fees, registration fees, DNA fees are all payable by the owner of the horse.
3. No additional fee or charge would be applied to membership and registration during amnesty.
Rational:
While most breeders register their stock with AHAA not all do and the membership is declining. Without an effort in increasing membership and registration, the viability of AHAA could place the studbook at risk.
This motion is a limited opportunity to draw individuals who may currently not have membership or registered horses with the AHAA association. It is also an opportunity to draw breeders and owners back to the association who may have not seen a value for continued membership, or registration.

Hi All
It is interesting that the AHAA Federal body has written their own explanatory notes about the motion put forward by the NSW AHAA Branch. These notes have been distributed without consulting the NSW Branch and are just the opinion of a few on the Federal Council. Published below is what the Federal Council is telling members. I can assure everyone they certainly DO have a choice whether they want full or associate membership so we cannot understand the first comment. This motion is for the members and without members/competitors/owners there is no point breeding AHAA registerable horses so we are confused with the Federal Council's comments. Surely it is not just income/voting rights the Federal Council is concerned about or is it? If it takes constitutional change then so be it. The AHAA needs to change to meet modern requirements and we have not seen any innovative suggestions from the Federal body.
Please attend the AHAA Federal AGM on 22 June and vote or please send in your proxy votes.
Federal's reply to the NSW Motion 1
1.Denies Full Members of non-breeding horses the right to CHOOSE their level of membership. Some non breeding members may be happy to pay for full membership in order to keep their voting rights and support their association.
2.Would reduce the numbers of members eligible to vote and also reduce the numbers eligible for positions as Federal Councillors, State Delegates or State Committee Members. (All Federal Councillors must be Full Members and 50% of State Branch Committees must be Full Members).
3.Would reduce the total income derived from Full Members annual fees.
4.A modest drop in income could mean we might not be able to afford a Federal Secretary. Our Secretary’s hours have already been recently reduced.
5.Would require more than twice as many Associate Members as we have currently to maintain Fee income.
6.If our members want to retain the convenience of a paid Secretary, then Fees need to reflect that. Secretarial work does not just apply to Breeders. Many similar small breed societies rely on Volunteer Secretaries and Registrars.
7.We already have trouble finding volunteers to fill positions for the Federal Council. It would be even more difficult to find volunteers to do the Secretary’s job, and with continuity.
8.If income from the new Fee Structure does not meet the expectations of the Proposers of the Motions, who will vote for higher Associate fees once it is in the Rules?
9.Our current Membership fees are in line with many other breed associations.
10.By denying non-breeding owners the right to Full Membership (ie voting, Committees & Council) we would be at risk of losing the knowledge and experience of older members and former breeders.
We are a Breed Society, not a Riding Club.

Thank you

Hi All AHAA Members
The NSW AHAA Committee has submitted the following motion to Federal Council for members to vote for. If you agree with the motion, please attend the Federal Council AGM and vote. If you cannot attend, then send in a proxy vote please! If you do not vote then there will be no change.
Rational for these Motions
Membership for the AHAA has declined substantially over the years. To bring the AHAA into modern times the membership must reflect current demand. Section 6(2) of the AHAA Constitutional Rules states:
1. A Full Member shall be a member who is the registered owner of a Horse or Horses in the Stud Book or Appendix thereto or in the Registers kept by this Association.
2. An Associate member shall be a member who is not a full or Life member.
The purpose of these motions is to edit and expand on these definitions and review the fees. The constitution does not state that any of the the proposed membership categories cannot be changed or expanded. In fact Section 31 and 32 make it possible. Therefore the NSW Branch submits the following motions to be be presented to the membership for vote.
The AHAA Rules have been considered in full and in particular we have considered the following section support the motions;
- Section 2(o)
- Section 8(a)
- Section 21(e)
- Section 31
- Section 32
Motion 1
New definition Full Member:
The Full member definition is to be changed to:
“A Full Member shall be a member who is the registered owner of a Horse or Horses in the Stud Book which is being used for the purpose of breeding or Appendix thereto or in the Registers kept by this Association"
An Associate member is not a Life Member or a Full member. An Associate Member may be the registered owner of a Horse or Horses in the Stud Book or Appendix thereto or in the Registers kept by this Association who only uses their horse(s) for pleasure or competition. However;
a. When the Associate member does breed with their horse then the member must upgrade their membership to Full member and pay the difference between the two fees.
b. If an Associate member does not upgrade their membership when they breed their horse(s) then the progeny will not be eligible for AHAA registration. The onus is on the member to ensure they are compliant with this section.
c. Associate members have to same rights as the definition of Association member prior to the passing of this motion.
Breed with their horse(s) is defined as:
- Stallions – the use of frozen, chilled semen or live cover. The appropriate AHAA or Registers kept by this Association paperwork must be submitted and the owner must be a full member.
- Mares – if any resulting foal(s) are to be registered in any of the AHAA Studbook categories or in the Registers kept by this Association.
This motion cannot be changed without going to the membership to vote.
Motion 2. The fee for an Association member is half the value of a Full membership. This motion cannot be changed without going to the membership to vote.

Remember NSW members will go into a draw to win some prizes so please send us photos as you are preparing so we can post!
Come on NSW members!!!

Hi All
Just a quick reminder for members who own stallions and have bred mares for AHAA eligible registrations to submit their stallion returns to the Federal body. Mare owners make sure you have your service certificate.
For those buying new horses please check the registration status. If your new horse is not registered with the AHAA it may be a very difficult issue to register them. Even if the seller tells you the horse is eligible to be registered, please check with Federal Secretary as this is not always the case.
Please contact us if you have any questions about the above. We are always happy to talk you through the process.

Hi All
Just a quick update on the NSW AHAA Branch.
We have been notified by Federal Council that it will be discussed at the Federal AGM, the return of NSW funds due to branch inactivity.
So Diana Harris, Sabina Callaghan and Kerry Sullivan are teaming up to try and bring life back to the branch but we need your help. We have so many ideas we would like to share with likeminded people who own Spanish Pure and Partbred horses to make the branch active and fun.
Some of our ideas are not new, some are, but it would be great to give them a go again and we have some thoughts to address the ‘membership’ dilemma that we would like to present. With online communication and various IT platforms there is so much we can try and share with likeminded Spanish horse enthusiasts. ‘Real’ sponsored shows are a possibility if that is what is wanted.
We are going to call a ZOOM AGM after Easter and after daylight savings finish. So if you have a genuine interest please pencil in 8pm on Wednesday 1 May 2024 for the AGM! Remember you do not have to be a member to join into the meeting. Zoom link will be made available closer to the date.
We would hate to see the branch close permanently!
