🐴GINGER🐴 is now available for adoption! This 16-year old, 14.3 grade mare is hoping to join a family as a companion with the potential for light riding. She is up to date on Coggins, immunizations, worming, and dental care.

Ginger arrived at VEWS with issues in her front hooves. With guidance from our vet and farrier, we have successfully thickened her front soles with Keratex hoof hardener. She is a very sweet mare who greets you with a nicker every time she sees you. Ginger handles well on the ground and enjoys being groomed.

Ginger is looking for someone to help her on her journey to reach her full potential. Her new family must understand the next steps in her hoof care and be willing to assist. We are more than happy to answer any questions about Ginger. Please email at [email protected] to learn more. Complete an adoption application to come out and get to know Ginger.

He gets along well with his horsey friends.”

Congratulations to Beck and fam 🥰🥳

Our volunteers had a great/freezing🥶 morning learning from our trainer, Ashley, about how she assesses a horse both on the ground and under saddle. It was also our first time riding 🐴PIPER🐴! We had no idea how it was going to go - OTTB + cold + windy… It could have gone so many different ways 😬 but it went GREAT! Note that Ashley rode Piper at W/T in a *halter only*!

Piper is a 20-yr old, 16.2hh OTTB mare who will be available for adoption soon. Stay tuned for more on this gorgeous mare!

Say hello to 🐴FRANKIE🐴! This handsome, 11-year old, Warmblood Cross gelding stands a sturdy 16.1. He's a pleasure to work with and always makes us laugh with his goofy personality. Please join us in celebrating Elena, VEWS Volunteer of the Month for January!

Elena has been a VEWS volunteer since October 2022 and currently serves as co-shift lead on our Wednesday evening shift. Elena's co-lead shared the following comments: "Elena is an excellent co-lead! Not only does she always have a positive attitude, she does such a great job with each of our horses. She stays calm, patient, is present in the moment, always reflective and gives great feedback to the rest of our shift when we need it. But my favorite part about her is how kind she is. She always gives horses and people the benefit of the doubt and consciously chooses to see the good first." Thank you, Elena, for all you do for VEWS and VEWS horses!

In Elena's words: "My VEWS origin story is similar to many volunteers': after moving to Richmond and coming out of COVID lockdown, I was looking for ways to connect meaningfully with my new community. I used to live near a horse farm as a child and would hang out there whenever I could, so VEWS seemed like a great way for me to rekindle a childhood interest. It has now become the highlight of my week! I work an office job, and being able to come to the barn every Wednesday after work is such a centering and rewarding experience, and such a wonderful respite from a cubicle. My fellow volunteers and the horses have taught me so much, and the experience has given me more than I could have imagined ❤️."

Piper is a beautiful, sweet OTTB mare, celebrating her 20th birthday today (along with all TBs). Piper will be looking for her new, forever home in early 2025. This girl is a rockstar for walking and jogging the obstacle course and really tunes in to her handler. She will be assessed under saddle within the next few days, so please stay tuned.

🐴OUTLAW🐴 is celebrating 6 months in his forever home! His family says: “Outlaw is doing well! He is still the happy go lucky, puppy dog of the barn. He has progressed to walk, trot and canter under saddle! He loves to go, but is a sensible and trustworthy partner. He likes to be in your pocket, and I believe he’d do so literally, if he could fit! We are so glad he’s part of our family!”

Good to hear that Outlaw hasn’t changed his hilarious ways 😆

Thinking about adopting a horse in 2025? Here’s how the VEWS adoption process works when you see an available horse that interests you:
1. Submit an adoption application (available on our website).
2. An adoption coordinator will contact you to make sure your wants/needs align with the horse’s abilities and personality - and vice versa.
3. Come out to the barn for at least two meet-n-greets with the horse. We want to ensure the best possible match for you and the horse.
4. Complete an adoption contract. Plan to provide transportation for your new horse within a week of signing the contract.
5. Before your horse goes home, VEWS will check your references and do a facility inspection. *No barbed wire allowed.*
6. Bring your new horse to their forever home!

Let us know what questions you have! Message us here or email us at [email protected].

🐴PEARL🐴 continues to put on weight and settle into the VEWS routine as she prepares for her future, forever home.

Pearl is a 22-ish, beautiful palomino mare who walks politely on lead through obstacles, enjoys grooming and attention, and will be best suited as a companion. Stay tuned as we head into the new year when Pearl becomes available for adoption.

"Great leaders instill in people a hope for success and a belief in themselves."

During this time of reflection and appreciation, we must take a moment to honor our leader, Executive Director Freda Cavallaro.

Freda embodies all the qualities a great leader needs to successfully lead an organization. She is positive, patient, kind, humble, and generous with her time and talents. She leads VEWS with a clearly-communicated vision and a shared passion for rescue that ignites enthusiasm and success.

Thanks to Freda, VEWS had another record-breaking year: 29 horses rehomed, our first adult horsemanship camp, the successful resolution of the largest owner surrender VEWS has ever directed; and perhaps most importantly the continuation of a culture that allows volunteers to share in and develop continuing success.

“Thank you" doesn't seem like enough but it is our sincere appreciation for our leader, Freda, that we highlight today.

🐴MOLLY🐴 is celebrating 3 months in her forever home with her pasture mate, Dixie! Her adopter says: “Molly's grown a good winter coat and should be in great shape for the winter. She got her feet trimmed this morning. She and Dixie (my other horse) are getting along and while each of them is independent, they seem to enjoy having a pasture buddy.”

Congratulations, Molly and family!

This picture has a total rockstar in it! No, not Santa… Lisa P!!! Lisa is our grant coordinator and boy has she been busy this year! Thanks to Lisa’s hard work and dedication, VEWS was awarded a grant that was 50% more than the grant we received from the same organization last year.

This award recognizes the meaningful impact that VEWS has on horses in need thanks to our dedicated volunteers. It also gives us the ability to help even more horses in the future. Anyone who works with nonprofits knows that grants often help cover the gap between donations and expenses - and we have incurred some serious expenses this year.

Thank you, Lisa! We are so grateful for your talent and dedication to VEWS!

VEWS

The Virginia Equine Welfare Society, Inc. (VEWS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all volunteer based Virginia corporation working to prevent equine abuse and neglect. Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate equines in need and to prevent equine abuse and neglect through community awareness. We provide safe housing, medical and rehabilitation services to abused, neglected, abandoned, unwanted and other at-risk equines and eventually, at the appropriate time, place them into caring, compatible adoptive homes.
