Spaz wanted us to remind you he's still here with us and he wants to make 2025 HIS year, too! That is, he wants to find his forever home this year!

Spaz is one of our senior boys, but he's not too senior! He certainly not ready for retirement or a porch and rocker (although he'd spend time with his family on a porch if that's their preference).

Spaz is active and likes to seek adventure. If his human friends are involved...even better! As you can imagine, he has nice manners, he can walk on a leash, and he even knows a few commands!

Spaz came to us from the Waco Shelter last summer after becoming the longest resident. He spent a good deal of time in foster care, and he was an excellent house guest! He wouldn't mind a new foster but what he'd really love is a forever home!

Come by and see if you're ready to make our sweet Spaz's dream come true!

Our journey toward becoming a rescue began in the summer of 2023. That was when we began bringing Waco Shelter dogs in danger of losing their lives to our facility. Our 4th pull was the beautiful Gladys!

Gladys seemed to be an "at risk" dog the day she entered. This highly intelligent lady was labeled a "unicorn" dog, meaning she had to be an only pet in the home. Even though that changed over time, Gladys never received a reprieve.

We're thrilled to have saved Gladys, and she's proven she doesn't have to be a single girl, though she may be picky about her canine friends. Otherwise, Gladys is a girl who is affectionate, funny, and full of personality. She's a strong minded pup, and she's looking for someone who is able to provide her a home with lots of love, but with a firmness and structure.

If you're THAT person, then swing by here and meet the wonderful Gladys today! She's been waiting a long time for her person, and we want 2025 to be Gladys's year!

We haven't checked in with the lovely Kit Kat in a while! Kit Kat is a lovely girl, who prefers a more subdued life.

She is currently searching for a quiet place to land. She would love a home without a lot of noise or fuss. She would like a soft bed to snuggle down during these winter months, and maybe some fresh grass to lounge in during the spring.

Kit Kat's ideal home would be one with just one or two people, who's life would include her. It would be a confidence builder for her just to have someone devoted and loyal to her. She assures you, she'll give you the same times 100!

If you're a fit for Miss Kit Kat, then swing over and meet her! She's ready to go home.

Grinning Gwen wants to know how you're doing?

Gwen is doing great! She's been busy keeping warm and waiting for her true family to come find her! Gwen is a fantastic girl. She's been in foster homes, and was actually adopted for a stint (family found out they were allergic) and only has rave reviews!

While it may take her a while to feel safe, she is devoted to her people. She adores kiddos, and she's been a wonderful doggie companion to other dogs! She is also crate trained, potty trained, and she's pretty darn amazing on a leash!

The only thing missing in Gwen's life is her person! Come by and make this girl's grin turn into a full fledged smile! Come take Gwen home!

Update on precious Roscoe!

Roscoe moved into foster care a couple weeks ago. He’s been doing well, but he still didn’t seem like he was feeling 100%.

A trip to the vet, tests revealed he was overall healthy, but the boy was a bit wormy. It happens, and fortunately it’s something curable.

He’s on meds, and he’s not appreciative of having to take them, but he’s relaxing and for sure on the mend! He has a follow up on the 25th, so send sweet Roscoe positive thoughts!

Happy fridged morning from our sweet boy, Cornelius!

Cornelius has been with us since last summer. He was another shelter dog who had outstayed his welcome and became "at risk". Fortunately, we had the perfect spot for this lovely lad, and we have enjoyed his visit since he came to us!

Cornelius is a great dog, but he often gets overlooked. Why? Because his fur is black!

Yes, Black Dog Syndrome is a real thing!

Black dog syndrome, also known as BDS, is a phenomenon in pet adoption in which black dogs are ignored in favor of light-colored ones. Observed by shelters and rescue groups across the world, BDS is an issue negatively affecting the adoption rates of black pets. The reason behind the phenomenon is unclear.

The BDS phenomenon has been studied for decades, gaining media attention since the 2000s when activists began publicly addressing the issue. Historically speaking, black dog syndrome can be traced back ages.

Shelter workers across the globe say they have witnessed black dog syndrome in action first-hand. Due to the phenomenon, larger, black dog breeds tend to stay at the shelter significantly longer than smaller, lighter-colored dogs. Many black dogs even get euthanized as a result.

In reality, black dogs are no different than dogs of other colors. They act the same, provide the same amount of love, and give just as many kisses. If you want to help reduce the impacts of black dog syndrome, adopting one, like Cornelius is the perfect solution!

Come by and ask to meet this handsome lad! He's a delight, and easy to fall in love with!

Welcome to a blustery Sunday in Central Texas!

Though the forecast is cold, we have news that will warm your heart!

Our little Zitaly has been with us since last summer. She was an "at risk" pup at the Waco Shelter and brought to us as a foster. She later transitioned into our program.

We learned this outgoing, fun girl is the cream of the crop. There were several opportunities, but she had yet to find the right fit for a forever home.

Yesterday, that changed! Zitaly was at an adoption event in Temple, Texas, and guess who she met? Her family!

That's right! Our sweet, petite lady has left the building! She will have the happiest of lives!

We want to thank everyone who championed for our Z girl! We also want to give a big shout out to her new family!

Wishing you all the best, Zitaly! It's happily ever after for you, and we couldn't be more thrilled!

We have foster, Brewer enjoying his Saturday, and practicing how he’ll help during the Artic freeze that’s coming this week!

Brewer wants everyone to know, he’s loving life in his foster home! He has many places to relax, and he gets to snooze between his parents at night if he chooses! He also has other homes on his property - family that welcome his visits and any time!

Yep! Life is very good for this big guy, and he encourages you to give fostering a try!

Brewer also wants everyone to keep their paws crossed that he’ll have his forever home soon!

Happy Friday from Zitaly!

Folks, this is THE cutest, bestest midsize little lady on the block!

Zitaly is uber friendly, and loves to give hugs! She LOVES play with her human friends, and she's cool with doggie buddies too!

Zitaly enjoys being outdoors, and she wouldn't mind some walks or strolls with her person. It's suspected she'd be a great snuggling partner!

You're going to want to find out for yourself! This weekend is supposed to be a fridged one. Why not come over before the front hits and meet this adorable, pint sized girl!

Zitaly is ready to move into her forever home!

Beautiful Peach! She captured everyone's heart when she was at the shelter, her forever home seemed to evade her.

We felt her pain, and didn't understand why! As she climbed higher on the longer stay list, BVAR wanted to ensure she found her family, found her!

Peach has been with us several months, and she's proven to be just as charming as we imagined. She's friendly, loves to give hugs, and close to perfect as they come! She doesn't mind going for walks, and she knows what sit means, too!

Peachy has some doggie friends - Royal is her current bestie! She may need a meet and greet if she goes home to a household with other doggies. (We can help with intros - no problem).

2025 needs to be Peach's year! Let's make that happen! Come by and meet this pretty lady! We promise you're going to be delighted!

Well, day one of 2025 has come and gone. We hope you celebrated and now are ready to get onto some serious adopting or fostering!

Speaking of...

Did you know that all the dogs that have come through, that Brad's stay has been the longest? That's right. He was the 2nd dog we brought into the fold back in July 23, and he's still here!

One handsome marshmallow pup is ready to find his forever or even get a break from the facility! The opportunity to live - or even visit - a home and get some normalcy would do him some good!

Brad is a loving boy, and he doesn't mind giving kisses to those he's attached to! He wouldn't mind some humans (he'd probably feel better in a home without small kiddos) who would set him up a bed by a window with sunshine to bask in. Some fenced backyard time would be awesome since he does need a little exercise to help him get into shape.

It doesn't take much to make Brad happy. He just needs that chance to show you how exceptionally wonderful he is!

Come meet the good-looking, blue-eyed Brad today! Let's begin the New Year with finding this precious fluff a home of his own or a foster!

We keep tellin' ya, Bilbo - aka Billy is an amazing dog!

His person has to hear us! Billy is hands down one of the best dogs onsite!

Not only does he have superb manners, but his face is JUST adorable!

Billy is people loving, and he is one heck of a pal to other dogs. He has played in multiple playgroups and has done extremely well!

Billy isn't a former shelter dog. He came to us as a "community" dog, which means he is lucky. Billy understands what it's like to live where he's loved and adored, and loving and adoring him is easy to do!

You need to come meet Bilbo today. Promise! You'll be impressed!

30/12/2024

Good Monday Morning!

We hope your weekend was spectacular and you're upcoming New Year week is even better!

Today, we'd like to touch on a "touchy" subject.

Heartworms!

What are heartworms, and what do they do to dogs who have them?

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs.

They are foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but heartworms also live in other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and—in rare instances—humans.

Dogs are natural host for heartworms, which means that heartworms that live inside the dog mature into adults, mate and produce offspring. If untreated, their numbers can increase, and dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone.

The mosquito plays an essential role in the heartworm life cycle. When a mosquito bites and takes a blood meal from an infected animal, it picks up these baby worms, which develop and mature into “infective stage” larvae over a period of 10 to 14 days. Then, when the infected mosquito bites another dog. Once inside a dog, the worms mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs.

Signs of heartworms are mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss. As heartworm disease progresses, pets may develop heart failure and the appearance of a swollen belly due to excess fluid in the abdomen. Dogs with large numbers of heartworms can develop a sudden blockages of blood flow within the heart leading to a life-threatening form of cardiovascular collapse.

The good news is that most infected dogs can be successfully treated. The goal is to first stabilize your dog if he is showing signs of disease, then kill all adult and immature worms while keeping the side effects of treatment to a minimum.

There are several different treatment methods, the "slow kill" often being the less invasive choice. It takes about a year (depending on the severity) for a dog to test heartworm negative.

Heartworm prevention is available at all vets, and it's strongly recommended, particularly here in the south, that every dog receive a dosage each month.

Howdy (pictured) is one of our heartworm positive dogs on site. He will be receiving treatment soon, and he should have a wonderful life ahead of him!
