Here's the #1 reason why I train my dogs so much. I want to be able to take them to a brand new place, with new distractions, off leash and know they will listen. 25 days of training! Here's a short video of random training we do for fun and to tire dogs out. Lots of send aways to place to do various things and tricks. I used her morning food to do this. The video is sped up to show more, but this entire session lasted about 20 minutes. The whole time she was asked to move quickly and think on the run. 25 days of training! Today we worked on Gremlin bringing her bumper to my hand. She struggles with this while swimming because she is so jacked up with excitement. I'd like to take her to some dock diving competitions for fun, but I'm not going to until she brings the toy to hand. It's hard trying to get toys out of the pool without falling in! We will do this at the lake as well, but she won't be allowed in the water. I will have to show her these same rules apply to the lake area first before trying in the water. No client dogs at the house this month so I decided to do 25 Days of Training leading up to the holiday. But not all 25 days because it's already the 2nd 🤣 Here is Gremlin working on her cooperative care handling skills. She's not a huge fan of vet visits or standing still. I'll slowly build this skill, so she willingly keeps her head in my hand to be examined. I like her to put her neck in between thumb and index finger to make it easier to grab and secure her if she does get too spicy. I started out by rewarding her for touching my hand then putting her head over my open hand then resting her chin on my open hand. Let me know if you have any questions about how to start working on this! I highly recommend trying it if your dog doesn't enjoy vet visits or being touched in certain areas. A challenging recall for Katana. She was headed to where I had dropped treats earlier. The wind was blowing the smell right to her. She got a big treat for that, because she struggles with her impulses. My advice to everyone is always "stop being stingy with treats!" If you want a dog who responds immediately like Katana does in this video, your reward has to be better than what they want to do. Treats are not bribing your dog, unless you aren't using them correctly. "Good" consequences (rewards) and "bad" consequences (corrections) are both part of learning. They allow dogs to develop a habit of listening. When the time comes where your dog needs to listen for safety and you don't have a food reward, they are still going to listen because that is the habit you taught them. I use A LOT of food during training. Dogs are sent home with instructions for their owners to use A LOT of food for training. After the dog has enough time to develop the same listening habits, then we will lessen and vary the rewards. Moral of the story is REWARD YOUR DOG and don't be stingy!
