Please read and share this post. Sharing will save donkeys' lives. When blanketing, it is essential to check for dampness and replace it with a dry blanket until the weather starts raining again at a minimum. Order two blankets for each equine.

Shelter is required. During freezing temperatures, feed at least three meals daily and provide warm, clean water; we use a slow feeder locked inside the high country plastic slow feeder ground level feeding inside the shelter. Provide loose salt with minerals to help encourage drinking more water.

Signs an equine needs a blanket are shivering, shaking, and blowing diarrhea.

The signs that a donkey needs a blanket are shaking, shivering, standing frozen, not moving, and diarrhea with no diet change. Diarrhea is a sign of stress.

Donkeys are not waterproof, cannot handle extreme cold, as well as horses, and are more prone to hypothermia than horses. Donkeys need warm, clean water, shelter, and a slow feeder with hay tested to be low in sugar and protein to stay warm.

Obese and senior donkeys can have difficulty regulating their body temperature.
