Three questions you should ask before you hire a dog trainer

Q: What happens to my dog if he gets it right? A: He gets access to rewards! Toys, treats, personal play - whatever he has shown us he wants to work for.

Q: What happens to my dog if he gets it wrong? A: We examine the situation and determine why he got it wrong. Were our directions not clear? Is something in the situation making what we asked too difficult (a nearby dog he’d like to play with, spilled food on the ground he’d like to eat, etc). We reset the scenario so that he will be successful next time.

Q: Are there any less invasive alternatives to what you propose? A: This is a situation-specific question, so it’s hard to give a generic answer... but the short answer is: it’s unlikely. I firmly believe in rewards-based training. I do not give leash corrections, electrical shock corrections, or harsh punishment. I follow the principle of LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) and stay in the positive reinforcement quadrant as much as possible. I do not use positive (application of) punishment or negative (removal of) punishment. For more information on the Quadrants of Operant Conditioning, see here.
