We then assist with the creation of a locally run animal management plans for sustainable change The Canadian Animal Assistance Team (CAAT) is a registered Canadian charity that provides veterinary services for communities with little or no access to veterinary care (either geographically or financially). Our veterinary teams are 100% volunteer based and we have veterinarians, veterinary technicia

ns and assistants from all across Canada participate in our projects. Our organization’s mission is to assist these communities with pet population control (through spay/neuter) and disease prevention (through vaccination and parasite control). We give people an opportunity they would otherwise not have, we start a community on the road to change. Given the chance to provide services for their pet, in our experience, a vast majority of people are very eager to do so. Our goal is to reach a level where animals can be sustained in a healthy state, where there are no longer malnourished and disease ridden strays roaming, no longer the need for large amounts of animals to be re-homed, no longer large numbers of litters of kittens and puppies that are unwanted, etc. We will continue to work with the community until we have reached a sterilized animal level that will make a difference. Then, we facilitate collaborations with humane educators, bylaw advisors, etc. to enable the community to create and run a sustainable pet population management plan.

Happy International Cat Day!

Today is for celebrating everything feline- cattitude, tiny paws, whiskers, meowing, hair balls, and kneading.
This day was created in 2002 to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them.
You can spend some time playing with your cat, learn about cat behaviour, make some cat toys, or support a cat shelter.

How will you celebrate?

Unfortunately summer has become forest fire season in many parts of Canada.
Getting our selves, homes and properties in order and safe is extremely important, but so is making sure we are prepared for our pets as well.

Having a 'go bag' for your pets is important part of being prepared for forest fires. This should include food & water (and dishes), supply of pet medications, leashes/carriers, cat litter/cat box, comfort items such as blankets/towels and small toys, and making sure your pet has some sort of identification.

Please don't misunderstand us- of course YOU can have the delicious human treat on your BBQ this summer!

As we are in the summer months, we mean let's make sure we keep our dogs cool while they are outside!
- provide shady shelter from direct sun
- ensure access to lots of fresh water
- keep activity limited to cooler times of day
- bring them inside out of the heat if possible
- never leave a dog (or cat) in a vehicle on a warm day

What a heart warming end to one of our days in Old Crow. Our team just finished the last surgery and was getting ready for a ride home (delivering the patient home on the way) when we were met by some amazing community kids. They came to talk to us, and we can tell you, they had so many questions and stories to share. It was such a heartwarming moment to connect with these young ones

Another "behind the scenes" pic from our Yukon project last week.
It takes a lot to get to where we need to be! While heading to Old Crow, we took a "little road trip" on the Klondike highway from Pelly Crossing to Dawson City and let's just say, our car was covered in a LOT of Yukon dirt! Check it out! We couldn't resist leaving CAAT's mark (albiet temporary) on the fender!

Canadian Animal Assistance Team - Making a Difference

The Canadian Animal Assistance Team (CAAT) is a registered Canadian animal charity organization. There are many communities in Canada and internationally that simply do not have access to veterinary services, either due to location (remote communities) or financial or both.

90% of our work is with Canadian First Nation and Inuit communities wanting to make a change. For many, the solution to pet overpopulation and animal welfare concerns have been very limited. Re-homing animals out of communities, if they have a rehoming group they can work with, is a never ending cycle. Some communities don’t even have that option due to the remoteness of their location. They have to either resort to culling or have a large amount of animals with no resources to support them which leads to animal welfare concerns and pack aggression issues. Our goal is to bring the services to them and address the problem right at the source, the non-sterilized pets. We work with them to reduce the number of non-sterilized pets and work toward local, sustainable support.
