The fourth of July is near and what better way to celebrate than with fireworks and sparklers. Although it may not be expected, dogs will chew on and eat fireworks and may become anxious due to the unexpected, loud sound. When ingested dogs can have GI upset, obstruction, and even damage to their red blood cells. It’s best to keep your furry friends inside while enjoying the pyrotechnics!

Came home from a hospice and palliative care conference to notice my Ronin had a distended belly and pale gums. On ultrasound he had a bleeding mass. My family and I made the difficult decision to help him pass in our backyard. We will miss you so much buddy 💜.

Although arthritis symptoms can differ from cats to dogs, there are some common things you can look out for:
• Limping
• Swollen joints
• Loss of appetite
• Unusual weight gain
• Accidents in the house
• Unwillingness to jump, play, or climb stairs

If you notice your pet exhibiting these behaviors, call your vet's office and ask if you should make an appointment! Find an AAHA-accredited hospital here: http://ow.ly/G1zX50Orcsm

Similar to tapeworms and roundworms, hookworms are intestinal parasites that live in the digestive system of your dog (or cat). The hookworm attaches to the lining of the intestinal wall and feeds on your dog’s blood. Its eggs are ejected into the digestive tract and pass into the environment through your dog’s f***s.

Larvae that hatch from hookworm eggs live in the soil. These larvae can infect your dog simply through contact and pe*******on of the skin and through the dog eating the larvae when they ingest dirt or during their routine licking (cleaning).

What are symptoms of leptospirosis?

Symptoms appear between 7-10 days of exposure and vary from mild to severe. Early diagnosis and immediate treatment of leptospirosis is critical.

In dogs, symptoms may include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and urination. Most dogs require hospitalization with intravenous fluids and antibiotics; some may need dialysis, blood transfusion and oxygen support. Although leptospirosis can be fatal in dogs, if treated early and aggressively, recovery is possible. However, there is a risk for permanent kidney or liver damage. According to a 2015 study in Oregon, 1 in 5 non-vaccinated dogs died of leptospirosis.

DID YOU KNOW?

- If left untreated, heartworm disease can result in your dog's death.
- Heartworms can grow to 16 inches in length and there can be as many as 250 heartworms in a dog's vital organs.
- Your dog can have no symptoms until heartworms are well-established.
- Almost 300,000 dogs in the U.S. are infected with heartworms each year.
- It is difficult, especially for your dog, to treat heartworms once established. It is much easier and less expensive to prevent heartworms than to treat them.
- Other kinds of worms that dogs can get include hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms.

For veterinary professionals, more detailed information on heartworms can be found at https://capcvet.org/guidelines/heartworm/
