Clients sometimes ask what’s a heart murmur sound like? I try to describe it as a whoosh or shhhhh sound. However, such a description is insufficient. A picture (or video in this case) is worth a thousand words. Here is a side-by-side video of a patient’s heart on longitudinal view with mitral endocardiosis (thickened valve leaflets). The video on the left is without color flow Doppler. It shows the thickened valve leaflets with slight prolapse of the anterior leaflet into the left atrium. The video on the right, with color flow Doppler, shows the blood going backwards across the valve leaflets. The flow backwards in this video is red, and then green when it is turbulent. You can picture the backwards, turbulent flow being a whoosh or shhhhh, can’t you?
