Muon came to us as a stereotypical kennel spinner. This behavior can develop from too much time spent in confinement and/or from lack of proper enrichment/activity.
One of the ways we are working to remedy this is by teaching Muon an incompatible behavior. The objective is to give her something else to do which will activate her thinning brain while also making spinning unlikely to occur since she is laying down.
In this clip, Training Associate Heather is developing a harder nose touch to the target. This step is done prior to building longer duration of nose contact with the target.
It’s a slow process as kennel spinning can be challenging to overcome but this little lady is smart and very food motivated. Every day she makes forward progress!

Tiny dogs have good sniffers too! SCENTdog Banshee takes a turn at learning to detect Phytophthora in inoculated living plants. This is the current phase of this ongoing research project to train dogs to assist in the screening of infected plants at native nurseries and greenhouses.

A little dog time for Camper Rogue this morning with our Camp Counselor Bolt. Since she pottied outside straight away, she earned some free time in the house! We limit dog-to-dog interaction but feel a pet dog needs to learn to handle the themselves around appropriate dogs too. This session was only a little while.

Little Rogue’s first full day at Camp Dusty Paw. She’s learning that it can be a better and more delicious choice to move away from scary strangers, especially annoying paparazzi with video phones, than to bark and nip at them. For her second session we think she was actually starting to have fun and even showed great recovery when the scary person made the gravel move!
