This is the story of my Aloe plant, Audrey III. My parents had big aloes in their yard in Apopka, FL, that bloomed every year, so I brought a very tiny baby aloe home several years ago. She became huge! She blooms a few times a year, repositions herself in her pot regularly, and this year she had much more of an adventure than previous years. The story follows in photos. BTW, if you need fresh aloe, hit me up. Her leaves are huge, and she could probably use a little thinning out!

I will play the Harp on my front porch tomorrow night (July 18th), from 7:30 - 9:00ish. 3520 Commonwealth Ave, 63143. I plan to play a mix of classical, classic rock, and jazz... really, whatever feels good at the moment, so feel free to come by. I have a nice grassy area, you can bring a lawn chair or blanket, a picnic if you like, & whatever you need, but please, no alcohol or pot. If any of my students stop by, I'll try to get them to play too. :)

My Eclipse story: I was meditating in Tony’s backyard during the peak of the eclipse, when I suddenly realized I was not alone. I turned to see a Robin sitting on the woodpile. We looked at each other for a minute, and then a realized something was wrong, so I gently stood up, sending them good vibes (they freaked out a little anyway), and then I realized their foot was trapped by a piece of string that was also wrapped around a log. I held them with one hand while I untied the string…it was a real mess with alots of winds, some pretty tight, and took 10 or 15 minutes to finally free the Robin, all the while their mate was flying through, chirping, and carrying on.

I was in my garden the other day, singing a song (no words) that the Nettle taught me last year, and 3 birds landed in the nearest tree. They were all looking at me and listening, and a male cardinal kept moving to a closer branch, then he started singing too! We sat there, improvising together in the moment, and it was clear that we were sharing that moment with intention. When I ended my song, he also stopped, and we just sat there together in silence for a few minutes, then I thanked him for singing with me, and the others for listening. This is my magical life, and yes, it turns out I AM a disney princess after all!

It’s been about a month since I’ve been able to spend any real time in the Garden, so it’s Wild and Crazy out there! Short forays have rewarded me with herbs to dry & flowers to arrange, but hopefully this week I can get some actual work done.

These last few weeks my gardening has been curtailed by horrible allergies & low air quality effecting my lungs, so bad that I could only go outside for short amounts of time, wearing a face mask. I’m missing one of my favorite parts of the season, when the Leeks explode into frozen fireworks, the fireflies light up the night, and berries are ripe for picking. It was a good week to process the herbs that were drying in my studio, and I took a few short short trips into the garden to harvest some bee balm, French thyme, chamomile, and various mint family members.

A little tour around the outside of the Gazebo… Eden roses, white lavender, newly harvested Lorz Italian Garlic (probably should have been harvested a week ago), volunteer Elecampane, purple lavendar, chamomile, French lavender (which was mislabeled as Munstead).

There aren’t a lot of photos to share this week. I spent the entire day monday in my garden, but ended up having to spend most of the rest of the week inside because of lung issues due to allergies and air quality. I did manage to harvest some elder flowers, various produce, and witness the first bloom on a few of my newer roses. I am grateful.

Images of Spring… I feel like I got a late start this year somehow. Being just one person, it always feels like I’ll never be able to do everything, and there is a certain amount of acceptance that comes with that, but it feels so good to immerse myself in my Garden again, breath in the smells & colors, touch the textures, listen to birds, and do a variety of small things that will add to the beauty of this wild and healing space.

Probably the last rose of this year. Also the last Basil.

A few days ago my granddaughter Ovella and I were planting Garlic around the gazebo Roses. Vella went in and got her hot pink watering can and when she came back she got stung by a yellow jacket and dropped the water can. Gratefully she only got stung once! I actually got stung twice in the melee. The yellow jackets had an underground nest under the Big Leaf Sage, and apparently they don’t like the color Pink!
