Are you taking time to investigate your product?

A well-designed product is going to start with a need in the marketplace….right?

For instance, why create a course for a certain skill set if there aren’t already people out there looking for that solution? Why create a new gadget for gardening if there aren’t already people out there who would benefit and line up to buy?

If your product doesn’t have a matched market who would be interested in your solution, then you are fighting a losing battle from the very beginning.

Dan Kennedy’s marketing triangle says you need to match the market (who) with your message (what) and media (how).

So, take a look at your product and think about what type of buyers would be attracted to the solution you offer.

Then, it’s just a matter of coming up with the right messaging and media to share your offer and attract buyers.

Keep this in mind when you are creating your next lead magnet!

Before you do it is important that you give your lead magnet a kick-butt title!

When you are finalizing your lead magnet you want to think of grabbing your prospect by the eyeballs, so they can’t bear to look away until they’ve had a closer look.

Try writing down 10 or 20 title options before you choose the very best.

Before you are ready to present your lead magnet to the world it is essential that you take time to edit your lead magnet for content and flow.

A lead magnet doesn’t work if it’s not nice and polished!

Take the time to read your product out loud listening for awkward and bumpy language.

Have a friend check it over using the CUBA method. This is a great method that anyone can use. The idea is to give the content to several people to read. As they read through, have them identify any areas where they find the copy confusing, unbelievable, boring or awkward. To indicate these areas, have them mark a C, U, B, or A (Confusing, Unbelievable, Boring, Awkward) directly on the copy.

Then revise and repeat. Oh… and spell check is your friend!

Without a strong sense of your ideal prospect — aka your “avatar” — you are left spinning your wheels with no real sense of direction… and few sales to show for your efforts.

I like to think of an avatar like one of those backlit silhouettes on a crime show documentary. You can’t see their face and their voice has been disguised with an electronic recorder.

Over time, good research will shed light onto your mystery person…

First, showing their face. Then, illuminating their voice, revealing their clothing, giving a glimpse into their lives.

By the end of your deep-dive research, you know your prospect so well you could sit down with them over a cup of coffee and talk like besties.

Solid avatar research will help you learn their innermost feelings, beliefs and desires. It will help you discover the words, facts, and phrases that are likely to encourage, frighten or excite them.

You’ll unlock the magic words and selling triggers that will turn them into loyal customers who want to buy from you forever.

A lead magnet is a bite-sized morsel of information designed to solve an immediate and pressing problem for your ideal market.

This handy marketing tool is the perfect low-risk way for prospects to step into your world...

Before you create your lead magnet you need to identify your ideal prospect.

You’re in the business of transforming lives, so think about the reasons why your prospect might seek out your service.

What are the most challenging things standing in the way of their own ultimate happiness, success, confidence, financial freedom, etc?

What are the biggest problems keeping your prospect up at night? Make a list.

How can you solve these problems for your prospect?

Take a moment to brainstorm a few ways you can offer your prospect some usable solutions — provide real value! Think of things they can do right now to fix an issue.

Remember, their biggest problems might be ones they hire you to help with later on. For now, just focus on a few smaller problems for your lead magnet.

One of the biggest problems I see with lead magnets is a lack of engagement.

Don’t just give your prospect some information and call it a day. Encourage them to DO SOMETHING! 😀

Take the learning farther...

Get them to apply the information, use the solution, submit a few first steps for your feedback or think about the content on a deeper level.

The ULTIMATE WIN for a lead magnet is if your prospect consumes it and then immediately follows up with you personally to learn more and ask questions.

So, ask yourself… is your lead magnet engaging your prospects?

What is a CTA and why do we need one?

CTA stands for “Call to Action” and it’s your chance to motivate your prospects.

You’re motivating them to buy a product, sign up for a service, share their thoughts, learn more, or even download a resource.

Regardless of what you want your prospect to do, use your lead magnet to ask for something. If you don’t have a CTA, then you’re wasting a valuable opportunity.

The CTA gives your prospects a reason to continue along a path… eventually becoming a loyal follower.

Here’s a tip:

Tell your prospect exactly what to do with your CTA. This isn’t the time to be vague. Tell them to “pick up the phone,” “enter their info into a form,” “click the subscribe button,” or “write back with your thoughts.”

Also tell them what is going to happen after they take your requested action. Make sure the results are exciting and provide immediate gratification for your prospect.

It’s just one simple thing to take your lead magnet from “ok” to “awesome!”

Have you heard of Eugene Schwartz? He wrote a book called “Breakthrough Advertising” where he identified the five levels of consumer awareness.

Level one is someone who is completely unaware. They've never heard of you and they are not aware of their problem.

Level two, they have a problem and they want a solution.

Level three, they know that there's a solution, that someone out there has what they need, but they don't know what.

Level four, they know what the solution is and they know that there's a specific product, but they don't know if you're the right person to give them that product.

Level five, they're fully aware. They know you, they love your product and they want to buy.

When you have a lead magnet, what you're really doing is you're helping to move your prospect along the buyer awareness scale.

Just one step. You don't have to worry about moving them from one to five.

Your Lead Magnet might take someone who knows they have a problem and educate them about a potential solution.

Your Lead Magnet might take someone who knows about a solution and educate them about a potential product.

Ultimately your lead magnet will help to develop a relationship with your prospect.

Don’t try to rush the sale…

If your prospect or buyer isn’t at the right state of the buyer’s awareness scale, they’ll be turned “off” by your pitch.

Did you ever have a really horrible first date?

One where your date showed up looking scruffy and took you out for Tuesday night tacos when you really wanted Friday night filet mignon?

Their breath smelled like fish and they spent the whole evening talking about themselves?

Then, they made you catch your own ride home... in the dark... in the freezing rain?

Ugh... we've all been there.

I'm guessing there probably wasn't a second date after you got home and recovered.

So, I was thinking...about lead magnets... because that's my thang...

I have this crazy theory about lead magnets. I actually think of them as kind of a “first date” in the marketing relationship.

It’s the first time you’re meeting with someone one-on-one. It's your first chance to tell them what you're about and make sure they get value from your promises.

So, show up ready to impress!

Make sure your lead magnet looks great, has truly valuable info, and works well to engage your prospect after they click.
