Hi there. I’m about 4 months in to an introduction of my 7 year old female calico and our new boy black cat. Things were rough in beginning and I had a hard time with I introductions I think because calico has accepted other cats in the past so easily. Even after owning many cats over the years this intro took a lot of steps and patience. I know the process could go on for years but at 4 months we’ve definitely seen so much improvement. We keep them mostly separated except for when the house is calm like right before bed. (Separated overnight too) Most of the time they’re in different rooms and come together for feedings and such.

Anyway a few areas were still struggling with id love some specific advice on. I know a lot of people on here as well as the videos suggest taking a step back in intros when there’s some tension but I’m wondering if that applies here or if there’s other options. And if it applies what is the step back from here? It’s like we’re good 80% of the time and then a few things trigger tension. (I watch them CONSTANTLY I work from home and have cameras in a few rooms so as soon as I see any long eye contact, raised tails, hunched shoulders etc I will separate them for a few hours and sort of reset)

1- liter boxes. I have 4 liter boxes in 3 rooms for the 2 cats. None are covered all have easy escapes. But still the female will walk over while the male is using a box and in the beginning she would chase him out (this was when I kind of slacked on the intro). I don’t give her the chance to even get near him now and thankfully he still uses them!! (Have had p*e issues in the past shew!) but the few times I let my guard down I can still tell she’s irritated by him using it. I still don’t let her get to him and will lock her from the room for a while. But like what specifically could be causing this?
2- the stairs. For whatever reason the new cat guards the stairs in our house. I don’t know if he likes the height. But randomly when we’re all coexisting peacefully he’ll go sit on the steps. If
