This is a kindly donated saddle that looks to be what people describe as Indian made. The leather is a bit different to other Saddles and there is no makers mark. I'm guessing it's 40, 50 years old. You see lots of these around still. I tested the tree it seemed solid, only the cantle felt a bit wobbly.
The gullet channel is the old style that narrows towards the back. These days Saddles are made with decent spinal clearance the whole way through. I was wondering whether the cushioning and gullet channel could be adjusted or remade on these old Saddles and on taking it apart I think so.
I also found a Crack in the wooden bar and a few loose nails, so more proof that older Saddles need checking....

Paid a couple sawmills a visit today and sourced what I've been after.
I'd like to thank everyone that donated their old much loved Saddles. I will be documenting each one and we can all see what is inside and we will see whether they're worth restoring or if they are too far gone.
I hope that we can gain more knowledge to help our horses and have a better understanding of what some of the Saddles that are common and you may be thinking about purchasing second hand might have lurking inside or whether it might be an oldie but a goodie? I will keep working hard so that we can find out and make informed decisions about what we put on our horses backs.
I will let the photos show for themselves the evidence and I will simply describe what I see 😊
I have put many hours into this for my own learning and I hope others will get something out of it too

Update on the Merv Robert's saddle tree, I have lightly sanded it down in preparation for resining and preserve it for display I put alot of the copper nails back in I think they look great! And that brass horn too. This was a well made saddle. I will put up more before and after photos when I get them altogether 😊

Here is an early 1900s saddle I have deconstructed. The tree is made like an English tree, stuffed with hair possibly horse hair of all colours. I tried flexing this tree before pulling apart and it felt solid, but I found this was due to the iron reinforcing bars that go right around the tree underneath. The wood looks to be oak, and is split and crumbling in multiple places. Canvas strapping has been used between the bars and doubles as the tree seat. Not much was holding the leather on anymore and only took a few nails out of the front and it popped off. This has to be the dirtiest saddle I've pulled apart so far but considering it's age I guess it's been around awhile to collect some things and has been well used in its life
