Who We Are

Natural Hound is a small family-run business in the historic river town of Anoka, MN. Using all natural and organic ingredients, we make safe, affordable and extremely effective products that you can feel good about using on your dogs.

We can trace our start to an English Springer Spaniel named Beezer and a simple paw wax made from olive oil and beeswax. A puppy in 1989, Beezer developed the sore paws and ice chunks between the pads that come from running in the snow and cold of a Minnesota winter. Looking for a solution, we made up a paw wax on the stove using a beeswax candle and olive oil from the cupboard. After a few do-overs and getting the mixture right, we had a wax that completely eliminated Beezer’s troubles.

Those first few jars of paw wax eventually turned into a line of all natural skin care products for people – Naked Bear Naturals – and Natural Hound products for dogs.

I was blessed to grow up on a small family farm surrounded by animals of all sorts. For someone born with a love of people, nature, and animals, I couldn’t have asked for more. After becoming an RN and seeing the great results that came from combining conventional and natural remedies, I was inspired to become certified in holistic nursing and aromatherapy. Now, I get to put that knowledge to work in making healthy, safe products for people and their pets.

I’m no longer the formulator for our products, but I do like to remind the folks around here that I did come up with that first paw wax. I run the business and sales side of our small company and try to convince everyone else that the more time I can spend out “field testing” the products, the better.

Gus took over as head of product testing in 2015 and has been lobbying hard ever since for Natural Hound to come out with a line of new food products which he would be happy to put in overtime to test.
