Our first baby geckos! (G. Orientalis)

Since 26 November we got our first baby geckos. 😁

Personally a little milestone since it’s the first reptile I got offspring off that’s not a Ball python. 😜

Its a bit of unexpected.
Because the mom has not seen our male ever since she got here.🤔

Either way she must have hidden the eggs and somehow they hatched!😆

So I was quite surprised to suddenly see little lizards walking around with mom…😅

They now all have their own set up.

But I’m very happy with these colourful little buggers!

#5 The tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) dislike high temperatures, Too much heat can kill them quickly.
Temperatures over 28 °C can already be deadly to them.

Coldblooded small facts Monday!

#2 Most mourning geckos in captivity are females!

Even more intriguing is biological and/or genetically speaking most of them could be considered clones.

This lizard is know to be quite adept to reproduce trough Parthenogenesis.
To explain it simply they can get babies without a male fertilising the eggs. (This does result in all female offspring most of the time)

They do however need to be stimulated by a mating attempt to get the process started.
And it could be done by another female.
So all you need to breeds these freaky little lizards are just two females!

Komende zaterdag hebben we onze eerste adoptiedag!

Hierbij is iedereen die een nieuwe thuis wenst te geven aan één van onze asieldieren welkom.

Het opvangcenter is doorlopend open van 10u tot 17u.
Een team van verzorgers staat paraat om de nodige uitleg omtrent huisvesting en verzorging van de beschikbare dieren te geven.

Enkele adopteerbare soorten zijn:
Korenslang, koningspython, baardagaam, huisgekko muskusschildpad maar ook kolenbranderschildpad, stierslang, koningslang, enzo...

Toegang is gratis voor steunende leden.
Steunend lidmaatschap kan ter plekke verkregen worden.

LET OP:
Dieren worden enkel h**plaatst indien er een correct huisvesting en kennis is.
Wij helpen hier iedereen met veel plezier in verder.

Had a nice trip to Tournai.
Off course we could not skip a visit to the Museum of natural history. 😉

Was very interesting to see the outside enclosures where they keep some European reptiles. 🦎

We finally have lizards again ! 🦎🦎

Our first pair of Goniurosaurus orientalis. 😁

They are apparently hard to find. 😆
It was quite the journey to find them.

We had a blast today and had very informative talks with individuals who have the same passion and love for these animals as we do. 😉

Also met two legends of this hobby/industry! 🤩
Thank you to them for sharing some precious time with us. 😁

Still enjoying every step of this exciting journey.😊
But can’t wait to see what the future holds. 😜

Just a little side project… 😜

Hi, we are back from vacation!

We had a good time in Spain (Region of Alicante),

And off course we had to look out for some h**ps… 😜

So we had a small 4 hour h**p walk not too far from our accommodation.

First animal we spotted while walking to the nature area was a very friendly black cat. 🐈‍⬛
Far from what we where aiming to find
but it could charm us anyway.

Once arrived there, we where immediately surprised by the very big presence of snails there.🐌
As the landscape seems very dry we where not expecting it. 😅
And they where everywhere!

Second find was a sturdy big black beetle.
While I was not expecting to see them a lot, later I noticed it to be a quite common insect in the region.
After looking it up the insect can probably be identified as a Darkling Beetle. (Pimelia Chrysomeloides)

We decided to go deeper as it was still close to road and the housing area.

Quickly we found lots of droppings on the ground. 💩
I suspected the fecale matter could be from rabbits or deer.
But did not heed it further attention.

As soon we went a bit further we clearly could identify the culprits.
Hare’s lots of them hare’s! 🐇
Seems like the area had quite a population of these rather skittish mammals.

As i was distracted by these animals with fur…
My girlfriend with her sharp eyes, warned us about a creature at our feet!
Apparently there was spider crawling on the ground. 🕷
Never seen this specific species before.
Unfortunately it looked like it has been trough a rough time. 😅
So we took some quick snapshots before moving on.

At some point we had the bright idea of flipping rocks. 🪨
We suspected there might be something hiding from the hot sun under it.
It took quite a few attempts before we found anything interesting.
But suddenly we got something good!
However my girl was a little bit less happy to find this.
(At her birthplace these creatures are usually considered dangerous☠️)
I finally saw my first European scorpion!!! 🦂
Very excited we tried to get some pictures of it.
Was not easiest thing as all it wanted to do was run away and hide. 😅
But very happy with this find! 👍

After this little adventurous encounter we continued to walk around to look for more animals.
Only to be startled by a cicada that decided out of nowhere to sing the song of its people. 😂

A bit later we saw a big spider web blocking our way. 🕸
In the middle of the web a beautiful spider was waiting for it next meal.
We realised quickly it was of the same kind we saw earlier.
Only this one looked quite a bit healthier. 💪
Later I could identify the spider as a Lobed Argiope (Argiope lobata).🕷

Once done admiring the beautiful critter.
We moved on towards a hill.⛰
As we got closer we could see a pair of birds circling around in the sky.
To get better view of them we decided to climb on top of the rocky hill.
Where we pleasantly surprised see that the Birds where Bee-eaters! 🤩
As far I’m aware of this bird is not that common in Europe. 🤔
And beautiful too! 🌈

When we got down from the hill with the nice view we had a little break.
Got some food and drinks in our systems…
And we continued onwards.

When we where getting close to noon.
The sun really started to burn hot.
At that point we decided to head back to our accommodation.
On our way back we did not encountered anything noteworthy. 😆

We did not find any snakes. 🐍🐍🐍
But it was a nice hike anyway! 😁

Another thing we did was snorkelling at Tabarca island. 🤿
Lots of intriguing and interesting things to see in this underwater environment. 🐠🪸🐠
Our first snorkelling experience was definitely nice! 👍
And we aim to this more into the future. 😉

Last but not least we also saw some h**ps at our accommodation.
Some kind of small lizard and a species of gecko. 🦎🦎

So a list of noteworthy animals we identified:⤵️

Inverts:
- Pimelia Chrysomeloides
- Misumena vatia
- Argiope lobata
- Theba pisana (local subspecies?)
- Papilio machaon
- Argiope bruennichi
- Buthus occitanus

Mamals:
- Lepus granatensis

Birds:
- Phoenicopterus roseus
- Meropus apiaster

Reptile’s:
- Psammodromus algirus
- Tarentola mauritanica

We really enjoyed this relaxing and sometimes adventurous vacation. 😎

Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in venomous snakes and how to handle them in a safe (as possible) way. 😉👍

Several weeks ago we had a new edition of our Venomous Snake Handling course. Two amazing days filled to the brim with all things ‘venom’!
Over the course of two full days our participants get an introduction to venomous snake biology, snakebite first aid and toxinology. They also had the opportunity to work with a wide plethora of venomous snake species in a variety of settings and exercises.

Congrats to our students on fulfilling this specialization course!

Okay, we have some news...

A little while ago we tested all our snakes.

No symptoms,
Nothing indicated anything.
Just for a peace of mind we did preventive testing.

I’m happy to be able to announce that all the Nido test came back as Negative!

That’s some quite positive news in my eyes.
