Who...
Dexter Cat was adopted from a no-kill animal shelter in Middletown, New York. I first met Dexter in a bathroom where he was staying with his siblings. Dexter's head was shaking all over the place. Dexter was born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Basically his head moves a lot, and when he jumps? He makes a HUGE arc to get to where he's going. When he jumped into the bathtub, he was asked "Did you jump into the tub?" He shook his head "No." I melted. From the moment he sat in my lap and looked at me in that shelter I knew between Dexter and Sink-Cat (whom I had just recently met on a kitchen sink) my life would be complete.
Dexter Cat loves cuddles, food, his blanket, and his turbo scratcher with a light up ball.
What and When...
Dexter wasn't eating much for a few days. That's not like him at all to pass up food. We noticed he was losing weight as well. On Thursday, February 28, 2019, we took Dexter to an emergency vet. They felt something. They did an x-ray. Cancer was suspected. So on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, we took Dexter to specialist. They performed an ultrasound and a biopsy. Dexter has cancer and needs surgery on his small intestine to remove the tumor. It's not Lymphoma. I honestly can't think at the moment which the doctor told me it was, but he said it's not really responsive to chemotherapy and surgery is what Dexter needs.
Over the past year, we've been treating our Great Dane, Faith, for Osteosarcoma. She's had a leg amputation, chemotherapy, and other treatments to help her fight cancer. So when we found out Dexter now has cancer as well…it devastated us. We're determined to give Dexter the same chance we were able to give Faith. Faith passed away March 9, 2019 at 7:25 PM.
Cost...
The initial Emergency Visit, X-Ray, and Medications for Dexter Cat cost $445.25. Dexter’s visit for his Ultrasound and Biopsy was about $1,025. The estimate for Dexter’s surgery is between $3,000 and $6,000.
More about Dexter Cat...
Dexter trusts me completely. Even through giving him his meds... Even though the Prednisolone suspension tastes horrible and he drools it out some... Even through taking a quarter pill Mirtazapine every few days to stimulate his appetite... Even though he knows that liquid and that pill are coming... Dexter just looks at me as I'm feeding them to him and takes it. He looks right into my eyes, drool coming out of his mouth from the Prednisolone and just trusts me to take care of him.
I've been told more than a few times by people that they've never seen an animal trust someone near as much as Dexter trusts me. Dexter and Sink-Cat have been there for me every moment, good and bad, since I adopted them. And now we need each other more than ever. Dexter needs me (us) to be there for him now...whatever it takes...even a shout in the dark to friends, family, even strangers...to come through for him.
