Boop Buca's Snoot in Welcome🖤

Buca is with us this week for training. We have to note that this guy has some HYSTERICAL facial expressions. (I'll try to share what we capture in the story 😉)

Okay back to business!
Here to work on:
👉🏼Pulling on the leash when he sees 🐿️ or other dogs.
👉🏼Jumping/Counter Surfing
👉🏼 Consistency with commands around distractions

Of course we are laying a foundation of all things 👉🏼 obedience 👈🏼

His owners just want bit more clear communication between themselves & him + structure.

Good Luck Buca!

A great self reflection ❔to start the week.

If the goal is to create calmness or more neutrality, then our behavior can matter as well.

Here's a little experiment for ya. Take a can of soda. Shake it up nice & good... Now try to open it. What's going to happen pretty much every time? Well essentially, not a very pleasant soda drinking experience.

When it comes to our dogs, if we create a bunch of energy, we can't necessarily expect that energy to just clear away as soon as we move on to the next thing. For instance a walk. All that energy 9 times out of 10 is just going to transfer to your walk and create not a great experience.

Take this a step further. If we are consistently doing these behaviors we start to create associations. Cue the dog that gets overly excited every time ANYONE comes through the front door now.

Calmness is a muscle that you can teach your dog and with practice you can strengthen daily. If they are being calm, let them do their thing...

By no means is this the blame game. You didn't know any better! But now you do :)

So ask yourselves, is what I'm doing benefiting me or my dog?

To sum up:

Step 1:Teach a reliable system.

Step 2:Add in real life distractions

Step 3:Take your new system outside (low stimulation)

Steph 4:Kick it up a notch in higher stimulation areas. Here's probably where you work through what you originally wanted to address. I.E. your dog getting excited every time you pass another dog.

Those initial steps might feel like extra work when all you want is that one thing addressed BUT they are SO CRUCIAL to your success.

We start inside with every single dog. If you aren't getting consistency inside odds are you won't get it outside.

Hope that makes sense & helps shed some light on the process.

"What do I do when..."

Is how most questions we get start. Our answer is never really just "give your dog this command."

A big part of our jobs is helping owners learn a new order of operations so that they feel confident and capable of trouble shooting any situation that may come up with their dog.

It goes something like...

👉🏼How can you communicate beyond just your words?

👉🏼 Evaluate the situation, what job can you give your dog to focus on to help them be more successful?

👉🏼Is the push back genuine push back or confusion that you should work your dog through? This might mean breaking things down even further to help them understand.

That's the magic right there... It's what makes a great owner & leader.

Bucky boy is also back home! From what we hear he is getting nice and settled into his new routine. The cat of the house is also enjoying the boundaries & structure Bucky learned while he was in. Ah, the many benefits of place 😂

Can't wait to see this handsome boy in a few weeks for boarding! I mean who wouldn't love seeing that face again?!

When you look at training like this it really feels more attainable.

Yes, training sessions & commands are important... But it's not the whole thing. I'd argue in many cases it's not even the MOST important thing.

All those little interactions that happen every day add up and do affect your relationship + your dogs mindset/behaviors.

More little things that are big that happen everyday:
-Coming out of the crate
-Going out to potty
-Meal times
-Petting (watch that mindset!)
-Putting the leash on
-Treats/rewards
-Coming home from work
-Advocating outside the home

Ya get the point?

The boys during their walk today 🖤

Both have really progressed beautifully the last couple days.

Duny tends to be more distracted when we are outside with him so we have been spending time building up his engagement and focus.

Bucky likes to push back in his own little ways but with consistency & repetition we are seeing beautiful progress.

Hopefully this weekend we will be getting out and about to roll all the training over to public areas where there will be distractions and such.

👉🏼 Here to work on obedience 🖤

His owners reached out because they haven't trained a dog in a long time... Well we are here to help with that training foundation & support!

So happy he's a part of the team this round of B&T's. We just know this guy is going to be great, and he and his family are going to thrive! :D

Belle & Chunk 🖤We've worked with Chunk before & we absolutely love the lil guy! He joined us to do a lil tune up and accompany his new sissy for the first part of her training. Miss. Belle has quickly stolen our hearts as well. Though these two may be little, they are indeed mighty capable of working just as hard! 🖤

Say it with me 👏🏼 'My dog is reactive & we are working on it'. 👏🏼

We see you. You are NOT alone. Keep working at it & reach out for help.

Reactivity doesn't have to be something you just accept. It's something you can work at day by day with your dog to see progress.

Avoidance is not a lifestyle folks. You can live a beautifully involved life with your reactive dog. It just takes work 🖤

Don't let the idea of perfection get in the way of really good.

Quick story...In my last semester in high school, I missed the honor roll by a mere few points. This was so upsetting for me at the time because I had struggled academically all throughout high school, and had really been pushing myself that last year. I actually called my mom crying from the bathroom. Years later now, I still remember what she said to me:

Don't let not making the honor roll take away from the fact that you got mostly A's, passed your hardest subject, and stayed consistent all year.

What she said was 100% the truth!

Sometimes when you've been working really hard at something you start to fixate on that end goal you've set in your mind. It's great to have goals/intentions for what you are working at, but don't forget to take a step back every now and again. This goes for dog training and your personal lives!

Ask yourself: Are you letting the idea of getting to that end goal overshadow how good you're doing, and all the progress you've made so far?

What's something you and your dog have been really good at lately?

🐶❓Confused dogs need clarity!

You can repeat instructions or commands when it comes to genuine confusion. It's also very important that we are never just saying "No". Odds are your dog is looking at you after that. Follow up with instructions on what you DO want them to do.

Don't forget the value of your body! Standing in one spot and yelling out commands doesn't benefit your dog. Sometimes simply taking one or two steps can help your dog connect the dots on what you are asking for/where to go. This is guiding them with your body and energy.

Use the leash! Just don't forget you can always put this on without a walk taking place, and that it's a great communication tool.

Break things down that might be too big to understand or overwhelming. Evaluate how you can turn it into several smaller steps that your dog can successfully complete.

Big welcome to a familiar face, Rooh!

Rooh and his parents worked with us 2 years ago with one on one sessions. They have done an amazing job with him!

Rooh is here for a one week board and train to incorporate Ecollar work into his training, freshen up on his obedience, and to get him and his owners on the right path for his mindset as he can be an anxious guy in unfamiliar situations. 🖤

We love being able to work with Rooh again, he’s such a smart boy 🐶

Riptide, also known as Rip like our favorite Yellowstone cowboy 🤠

What he's here to work on:
-Pulling
-Jumping onto people
-Digging in the yard

He's a big strong fella so we definitely can see why his owners reached out for help. We are happy to be the ones to offer it!

He's here for two weeks so we'll also be getting this guy out on outings. We love taking the dogs out and making sure that all the training is solid out in the real world as well!

Can't wait to update y'all on his journey 🖤

Who here is a victim of the comparison game? ✋🏼

I've compared myself as an owner to other owners on the internet feeling like I wasn't doing enough.
I've compared myself as a trainer to other trainers feeling like an imposter.
I've compared my dog to other dogs and what they could do that mine couldnt.

✨THIS THOUGHT PROCESS IS NOT HEALTHY OR OKAY. ✨

First of all, most of what you see on social media is fake. There I said it. Yeah, the dog in that video can probably actually do those things you are seeing... but what you're not seeing is all the times before that clip that they were struggling. You are just seeing an END PRODUCT. So...you can see how comparing the beginning of your dog's journey to that dogs end product is not productive or helpful in any way, right? Right.👍🏼

Your journey + your dog's journey is your own. No two are going to look the same, but that doesn't mean yours is any less important or meaningful.

Dear fellow humans! Listen to owners when they say no. Yes we know your dog is nice, but still. (That also goes for those of you who are "dog whispers" 👀)

Owners- we understand it can be hard to set that boundary BUT your only responsibility is to your dog, their safety & security... Not Joe schmo you are passing on the street.
Advocate for them pups!

Ah, puppies 🥰 who doesn't love em? It can be so exciting to have a new little furrball join the family... That being said this is an important & impressionable time in their life. Definitely keep these concepts in mind BUT have fun and enjoy puppyhood too 🖤
