pet professionals are (still) begging you to stop doing on-leash greetings and have better control of your dog. and here’s why.
i was out hiking with my friday pack this morning on our usual trail. i set them up to take our group photo not even 5 minutes into our hike when their body language was alerting to something behind me - someone walking their dog. i pulled them all off the trail and into the woods, as i always do. four dogs versus one isn’t fair and i need to be able to appropriately work my pack.
“you’ve got your hands full!!!” 🙄 (a common comment.) i don’t, i’m used to a bigger pack, but i chuckle and try to engage my dogs regardless. i admit i am struggling more than usual because of the closeness of this stranger and his dog.
i have two dogs who think everyone is their best friend, one who will police their energy if i don’t get a control over it (and soon), and another who is fearful of new dogs entering her space while on leash.
so what does this man do?? allow his dog to greet my FOUR dogs nose to nose. of COURSE an altercation occurs. nothing bad happens. just a bitch fit. a lot of vocalization and raised hackles.
i say “why would you do that?!” because honestly what the f**k? why would you see me trying to work four dogs and gain their attention, while you’re also trying to keep your own dog’s attention, but allow your dog to greet my four dogs, two of which are incredibly tense?
he replies “that was your fault”. get f**king lost.
if you can’t control your dog enough, ask for more space. i’m more than happy to go deep into the woods. to be covered in ticks to give you more space. just like i did 2 minutes later when the woman behind me with her two dogs said “i think this is going to be an issue”. it really isn’t that hard (and not a single thing happened!!! not a bark, not a single dog lunged, what a miracle).
my dogs were justified in setting a boundary, loudly, because your dog encroached on their space. because you saw me trying to work my dogs, and your dog couldn’t read their loud body language (i get it, bagel can’t read body language for s**t). but do better.
this is how dogs get bit. this is how dogs get sent to the emergency room. it doesn’t “happen out of nowhere”. the signs were VERY clear. you’re just a du***ss.
don’t ever put my dogs in a situation like that ever again because you’re too stupid to read the room. because i will go to war for them.
and shoutout to my pack, who have a quicker recovery time than i do. because they bounced back within 30 seconds. and it took me about 3 hours to calm down. lol.
