We held a reactive dog workshop on Sunday. Texas Devil Dog came out and shared some great knowledge. Here we are working with 2 dogs teaching them to disengage from each other and re-engage with their handlers. I am working on starting a reactive dog support group for the Lubbock area. Stay tuned!

We've had a busy dog show weekend!! We attended SPOTC's obedience and rally trials this weekend.
On Friday Kid qualified in rally Master Excellent and Advanced and earned 4th place in Master with a score of 97 (out of 100 we had some stiff competition). Tucker qualified in Novice with a score of 82.
On Saturday Kid qualified in Excellent and Advanced (I don't remember the scores 😅). Gauge qualified in Novice and earned his Rally Novice title! Tucker qualified in Novice again with a score of 89.
On Sunday (today) Kid qualified in Master Excellent and Advanced. He won 3rd place in Master with a 94 and 3rd place in Advanced with a 98. Gauge impressed all of us and qualified in Intermediate with a 95. We hadn't worked with him on Intermediate signs yet but he's a smart and willing dog and we winged it. Tucker qualified again in Novice and won second place with a 96 and earned his Rally Novice title! Pictures are of Gauge and Tucker.

She is good with confident dogs of all sizes. She is still puppyish but she is intelligent, biddable, and wants to be part of the family. She's happy to hang out on the couch with you and she's always ready for the next adventure.

Combining breakfast, enrichment, and confidence building. Ghost has had to seek food out of objects before like box lids or wadded up towels. This is the first time he's seen this plastic tub. About 2/3 of the way through he loses himself in the search and realizes he's made himself uncomfortable. He has learned to regulate his fear through retreating. You'll notice when he retreats to his crate (aka his safe space) he immediately turns around and comes back. Ghost gains the confidence to try again through retreating. He comes back, gets his front end back in the box, and continues his search. Go Ghostie go!!

Notice how the bottom right CORRECT picture has the person petting the dog with ONE hand. When you put 2 hands on a dog, it usually changes the context of the interaction. Most dogs have been conditioned to feel "caught" when they're being touched by a person. It has been implied they shouldn't move away. At some point, our dogs have moved away from us and we've grabbed them to stop them. Don't ever grab at a strange dog. When a dog feels caught or trapped (lots of touching, on a leash, indoors, etc.) the dog's only option is to tell you to go away. Be a friendly, neutral stranger. Don't be a pushy, rude stranger. Help set dogs up for successful, positive interactions. Give them regular "pet breaks". Pause, take your hand back and wait for them to seek more attention. If they leave, they were done. It's ok for them to be done.
