Scrappi was adopted!
‼️URGENT‼️
Scrappi ACCT-A-177962 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Scrappi must have confirmed placement with an EXPERIENCED ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by Wednesday, October 16th by 10:00 am. Should Scrappi’s medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Due to limited space, timestamps may also be proceeded with early so it is imperative to let us know if you are considering adopting or tagging an animal.
Meet Scrappi! This adorable boy was found as a stray on 10/9 and is currently looking for an experienced adopter or rescue placement. He's understandably confused about why he's here, and while he's been reactive in his kennel, he starts to relax more outside with the help of some yummy treats. Scrappi came to ACCT as a stray on 10/9 by a good samaritan who found him. Scrappi is in need of a home that will go slow and build a strong foundation of trust with him to help him manage his reactivity. To help manage his anxiety in the shelter, he is on behavioral medication. Due to his reactivity in the kennel and handling, this tiny guy is looking for a home without children but may benefit from a canine companion to help him learn to trust! Scrappi will jump up to allow pets, but he still needs a little time to build trust with new people. He's hoping for a patient and understanding home where he can feel safe again. Could you be the one to help Scrappi come out of his shell?
On 10/12, Scrappi was given a medical exam and found to have matted hair on his back, intermittent sneezing, and being highly stressed with constant panting during the exam. Occasional growling and baring teeth when being handled, but did not attempt to bite. Otherwise we were unable to examine his mouth, teeth, gums, or ears due to his behavior. He was noted to be clear and normal for his eyes, nose, and mobility. Due to his intermittent sneezing, he was seen again on the 12th and diagnosed with a doggie cold and placed on antibiotics for treatment.
BEHAVIOR NOTES:
On 10/14 per staff: Took Scrappi out for a dog meet today. In his kennel he barked for attention and gave loose tail wags when approached. Soon he started growling and snarling but after sitting with him for a few minutes, and some baby talk, he would ease up on the growling. The key with him is lots of patience and understanding. He began giving wiggles when shown the leash. I first attempted to leash him with the snappy snare, but he wanted nothing to do with it so I switched to a regular slip lead and he had no issues with leashing. Exited his kennel easily and was ready to go for a walk!
In the office, he greeting the other handlers whilst growling, however would lean in for more pets. Scrappi then had a good meet with another small dog. He remained loose and would go to each handler for attention. After hanging out with him for a bit on the floor, he opted to sit by each handler for some pets and would growl less and less.
Returning to the kennel was a little difficult as I did not want to push his boundaries or lose the trust we had built. I put some peanut butter on the back of his kennel to bribe him, but this didn’t work. With some leash pressure, and lots of scattered treats he did go back into his kennel and was patient for letting me remove the leash.
On 10/13 per volunteer: Although Scrappi presents reactively in the kennel, he was easily won over with hotdogs. Leashed cautiously but without any problem. I quickly lifted him down and he did growl at that. He spent our time outside mostly exploring. He takes treats nicely (see video) and I was able to pet him. I was able to return him to the kennel and remove my leash easily. I think he was somewhat more relaxed from having been outside.

KENNEL PRESENTATION:
When approaching his kennel he was up on the bars with a wagging tail and began alert barking when I opened the kennel door. He saw the leash and tried to run out so I quickly closed the door which made him start growling at me and he began hard barking. I chose to use a snappy snare due to his growling behavior and was able to easily leash him. He pawed at the snappy snare and jumped into my arms. Once he was in my arms he growled the entire time so I put him down to walk.
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally
HANDLING:
In the room Scrappi was very curious and sniffed around, occasionally coming up and soliciting for pets. Scappri will randomly solicit and then growl in your face and bare teeth. He is very conflicted on what he wants but does allow all handling. When the other handler spoke to him directly or gave him commands he growled louder and began snarling. He will jump up on the handlers lap and receive pets but then begin growling, tight body and maintain eye contact.
