I haven’t ridden in my jump saddle in awhile and decided to pull it out today. She was great but still somewhat spooky about the ducks on the pond 🙄 I took her to chase them off so maybe she’ll mentally think she won and get over it, lol.

I also tried out this new bridle from millbrook leathers. Essentially it’s a noseband-less bridle, similar to a western head stall but in an English style. It has a nice wide anatomical crown and a jaw strap that helps stabilize the bridle, making it ideal for a hackamore or side pull as well. I really like it and Lettie has great feel in it. I dare say she’s more responsive in it? She isn’t magically quiet and no longer tosses her head up on occasion, but she feels like she goes to the bit better when she does focus on work and not actively tensing up in preparation to run away from the ducks. I’m not super impressed with the leather, but it could just be that the holes for the rein buckles are in the wrong spots. I had a heck of a time getting them buckled. It probably just needs to be oiled.

We got back from big bend on Sunday, but I think I forgot to post about our Friday ride. We had a wrangler from the equestrian center we boarded at take us out. We were able to get on some trails we otherwise would not have been allowed on, so it was really neat to explore out of bounds. We did about 8 miles, the horses were excellent and happy to plod along. They definitely earned their keep last week! Both of them will be getting a good amount of rest and relaxation. We’re already dreaming of the next one 💕

Day 2 on the trails. We did 17 miles and made it to some of the interior trails of big bend ranch park, but because we couldn’t haul to the other trail head it took about 7 miles before we got to the new trails. It was perfect weather though, the sun came out but we still had a really good breeze that kept us cool. The horses did great, both were still power walking all the way to the end.

We’re finally here! We arrived yesterday with the horses, we’re staying for the week and riding Big Bend Ranch Park. We rode about 12 miles today, we are planning a longer ride for tomorrow that has a bit more challenging terrain and elevation.

Little field trip out to Ashleys barn to get my saddle fit to Lettie. The little changes she made made the saddle feel totally different! I’m pretty happy with it and think this will be fine until I’m ready for a custom.

I took Lettie to Garey park today with a new friend. We did about 8 miles and got lots of trotting in. Lettie was a little spicy at the beginning but settled down pretty quickly and was overall very pleasant. We switched her grain to a lower calorie feed and hoping to see if it chills her out since she has been such a lunatic lately

I got a new noseband for my dressage bridle, I’ve been getting tired of my Montar bridle. I just don’t love it like I use to. I don’t think Lettie cares, but we’ll give this one a try. I think it looks nice on her.

We took a lesson yesterday with Crystal before the cold front. Lettie was a spooky pill and we tried to work through different methods of getting her to chill out and relax. It went really well, and then when we added energy she randomly took off 😂 the arena is just extra spooky I guess, but she needs to figure it out. I’m hoping once Audrey levels out the round pen I can do some work with her in there and let her vacation down by the scary stuff. lol

2023 looked very different than the last few years. We started out the year working through an abscess that popped up out of nowhere, never drained, and then suddenly was gone. Lettie was three legged lame hopping around and then was just fine 🤷🏻‍♀️ I was pretty pregnant at that time so bending over to wrap her feet was very tiring, lol. But I’m happy that it worked itself out. She then went to stay with Kari for several months while I took some time to have Avery and recover. Lettie and Kari did so well together, I couldn’t have asked for a better situation. They did regular jump lessons and Kari even took her to a show at Texas Rose where they did pretty well in a competitive class. I went and got Lettie back at the end of March and brought her back to Scattered Oaks. She went right back in with Stuart and CJ as if they had never been apart. Without missing a beat I took Lettie to do a cross country clinic with Ashley Adam’s a few weeks after getting her back. I probably should have taken a bit more time to get fit and recover, but she was so good. We had a great time learning from Ashley. After that we went out and schooled xc at pine hill with new friends. Then for our birthdays, Kari and I did a cross country clinic at Willow Draw with Elisa Wallace. It was so fun! I then set my sights on working on our dressage. We hauled out to Ashley’s for lessons and to prep for our first rated dressage show. We were able to squeak out qualifying scores for our bronze medal at first level, which I was very happy with! I had hopes of doing some more dressage shows during the year and working towards second level, but it just didn’t happen. I was very optimistic about how much I would do this year, but once I went back to work and Avery became more demanding things sort of fizzled out. The distance I had to drive just to see Lettie was really taking a toll on me and so I decided to move her closer to home. The place I moved her had a lot less amenities but the drive was about half, which has been so nice! I have been able to get out to see her a smidge more than I could before, but still not enough to keep on top of her fitness. So in the fall we took things easy and did our best to haul out for fun outings when possible. I took her out to Dan Keens, we went on a few trail rides, and hauled out for jump lessons. November/December was kind of dead with the holidays and my trip to Europe. But we finished strong with a 3 day camping trip with Kari and Rocky out at Reynolds Creek to ring in the new year. It may not have been the most eventful year and we maybe didn’t do as much as I wanted to, but that’s ok. Lettie doesn’t mind being a pasture puff and I can’t wait to be able to share this with Avery when she is older. I think overall it was still a very successful year, and I’m looking forward to what we’ll do together in 2024. 🎊🎉

It was such a beautiful weekend for riding. We did another 8 miles before heading out.

I took Lettie for a midday ride before I head out of town. She’ll have some rides with a dressage trainer while I’m gone, I hope she will be able to get Lettie through her anxiety in this arena. Sometimes she’s good, but more often than not she gets very worked up about this pond and the woods. There are turkeys on the other side that make a lot of noise and I guess the water just seems really untrustworthy. lol. Hopefully we can get it figured out!

I took Lettie on a solo trail ride today, we just went over to River Ranch because it’s so close. We had a lovely ride with pretty minimal spooky moments. We explored some new trails we haven’t been on before. The signage is still pretty confusing but it was easier to navigate this time.

I hauled Lettie out for a jump lesson at Power Track Eventing this morning. It was our first time riding with Christie and we had a great time. We mainly got to know each other and then worked on getting Lettie’s adjustability between jumps. Getting this extra 7th stride was hard work! 💪 I’m excited to have a place pretty close to home base I can haul in for lessons as needed.

The cold front has finally arrived! Temps dropped about 40 degrees in the span of a day and it has been raining off and on. It’s supposed to get down to the low 40s tonight with rain 🥶 I went out to blanket Lettie and borrowed these Cavallo boots from the barn owner in an attempt to keep a hole in Lettie’s hoof clean. Kevin dug a spot out and it needs to stay clean and dry 😅 this muddy weather is not ideal but we’ll do our best! I’ve got some hoof putty coming that will hopefully do the job, but this will have to do for now.

We braved the crazy rain early this morning for a chance at a jump lesson with Ashley Adams at Anchor equestrian and shoe reset with Kevin. We haven’t jumped in awhile so I was nervous how Lettie might behave, but she was excited and just a smidge sassy. She jumped everything I pointed her at, she really does love it. We’re both out of jumping shape and will be taking the next few days to recover, but what a fun day! I’m so glad the weather turned out ok (minus driving in torrential rains, it cleared up when we got where we were going)

We hauled out to the new River Ranch equestrian park this morning and did about 7 miles. I was super impressed with the park and enjoyed myself. It’s only a 7 minute haul from this barn too, so that’s super convenient. It’s nice to have a close trail riding option!

First ride at the new barn was pretty successful. The arena here is a bit tighter than we’re use to, but it’ll be good for forcing us to be more precise since we won’t have the extra room to make larger than necessary circles or long drawn out transitions 😂 we’ve been trying this hulsebos saddle and it’s been a pretty good fit for us. If anything it has really made it obvious that my custom has to go, it has been inhibiting her movement and not doing me any favors either. It may be a good trade while I continue searching for the true upgrade saddle.

I brought Lettie to our new barn this morning. This one is maybe not as fancy, but it has all the essentials. And the biggest thing is that it’s close to home! This cuts my barn commute just about in half, and it’s on the same side of town where I can easily avoid tolls and the highway if I want to. I’m planning to start consistently riding in the mornings and have this be a great way to start the day. 💕

Lettie and her new roommate weren’t too thrilled with each other, but I think they’ll get use to each other after a few days

15/09/2023

I hauled Lettie and friends out for lessons with Ashley Shaw Dressage yesterday. It was even sprinkling some during our lesson and Lettie was able to stay pretty focused 💕

I need to start a workout regiment to get our fitness back up, and then maybe we’ll be able to make some more progress towards second level. I think collection is going to be a struggle bus for us both. We’re moving barns at the end of the month to a place closer to home, so my hope is that we’ll be able to get on a more consistent riding schedule!

Another happy barn day with Lettie. We both enjoyed the cooler weather and had a great ride 🐎
