‘Twas the night before Christmas and there on the farm
The emus were gathered down by the barn.
In the house the barn boots were all lined up
Knowing that Santa would soon show up.
The farmer in his sweat pants
And his wife in her gown,
Were getting ready for bed
As the sun had gone down.
When out in the pens there arose such a noise,
Much more than the emus playing with their toys.
The farmer flung open the door as fast as he could,
Stepped out onto the porch and there he stood.
He thought, “What to my wondering eyes is this view.
but, a miniature sleigh and eight tiny emu.”
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
He knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid that eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now, Phil! Now, Freddie! Now, Johnny and Molly!
On Okie! On Annie! On Lovey and Dolly!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Now, dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
As quickly as emus who play in their pen,
They twisted and turned and then did it again.
Then up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With a sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas, too.
And, then he heard on the roof what he knew wasn’t a paw,
It was the ticking and scratching of each little claw.
As he came to his senses and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in denim from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
He looked tired from chores but, still very content,
You could tell he enjoyed the time he had spent
Tending his emus and building his toys
To distribute to all the good girls and boys.
Time was getting short and Santa had to leave.
His emus would take him with lightning speed
All over the world on this special night
And, he said these words, as he drove out of sight.
“Take care of those emus, they’re special, you know.
Feed them well and protect them from snow
As you enjoy your Christmas with joy and delight
I wish a Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
