Little Sean loves holding your finger in his beak while he falls asleep after a big meal of mealies. I believe this photo was taken over Christmas (on Xmas day from memory). A wonderful friend who also cares for wildlife (WIRES) brought Sean around for Christmas lunch, and I couldn't resist a quick snuggle.

We had baby Blue-Tongue lizards hatch on our property. This little guy was sitting behind the tyre of a friend's car, and we saw him just before they drove off. The little lizard was so sweet and gentle. We have a Momma Blue-Tongue who visits the Eckies almost daily to share their fruit and veg, so I wonder if this is one of her babies.

Keeping wildlife safe from cats... We all have that one friend who sends us the craziest things. My gorgeous best friend sent Azrael a pet pram and he is besotted! Az is an inside only cat, we spend so much time outside on our veranda however so I always hated him missing out.

Now Az gets to be outside with us, keeping the wildlife safe while he parties with his Mum and Dad.

My sweet boy, waiting patiently for his lunch. Barney has fallen in love with an Eckie hen called Pink. He follows her around, saying "Hey boogers" and "I love you guys" as he tries to feed her. Poor Pink is a little confused. She and Benjamin Button have been a couple for years but Barney is insistent they should become a throuple. Even though Barney's advances are rejected, the three kids get along very well. Love truely knows no bounds, either that or Barn is having an identity crisis.

Watch Parrot Haven's gorgeous Eclectus hen, Penny, enjoy head scratches and snuggles.

Contrary to belief, Eckie hens can be very affectionate. Granted not all are. Red, our matriarch hen, has attitude enough for all of our girls and if you even look at her the wrong way when she is in a mood, she will tell you 'No, naughty!' If I were to try cuddling with Red as I do Penny, I would be assured a quick trip to the ER. However, some of our hens such as Bean, Buttonchops, Bi and even Sammy, all love their snuggles.

Be sure to read the chapter in our book about Eckie hormones as even though we love snuggling our kids, you have to be sure you do not stimulate them sexually as patting them on the back, playing with their tail can get them all hot and bothered. This can lead to egg laying and a plethora of behavioural changes.

On a side note:
Our little Penny is perfectly fine physically. She received an injury to her beak as a young baby and every few weeks to trim it as she can't grind it down herself (she is such a good girl, just sits wrapped like a little birdie burrito while we tend to her) so know that she is healthy, happy and has the cheekiest little grin that comes from her unique look.

Gorgeous Blue posing for the camera. I went into the aviary the other day to take some photos and Blue, Button aka Buttonchops, (she whispers this at night when we tuck her into bed) and Sammy were all vying for position, posing and looking absolutely stunning. More photos to come but how gorgeous is our Blue!

When you are adopted by a fox called Rupert.

It was 2021, a few months into the lockdown and Jase and I were out on the verandah enjoying some drinks when we heard a strange rustling in the bushes. Jase grabbed the torch, shone it towards the sound and was shocked to see a fox looking back at him from amongst the bromeliads.

At first we were amazed, foxes are usually flighty and run away but Rupert (who was yet to be named) just stood there looking at us curiously. So, bets were on! How long would take our new friend to join us on the verandah? I said a week, Jase said a few days...

Two nights later, Rupert, who was now officially named, snuck up the steps and plonked down on his little bottom and looked at us with interest. He was a bit shy but seemed to want to get to know us.

From then on, Rupert was a nightly guest. Jase almost tripped over him on one occasion when he went out to grab something from outside. Rupert was sitting patiently at the front door, as if waiting for our company.

We didn't feed Rupert, he just seemed to enjoy being our friend. It was winter so the nights were cold but we would often sit outside, chatting and waiting for our foxy friend to arrive.

Rupert would sit for almost an hour with us, listening to the music and enjoying the attention. He was comfortable enough to sit close by and then when he had his fill of socialising, he stood and went off to do his foxy business.

Some nights he would return for multiple visits, he was our little party fox! The music was pumping, drinks were flowing and Rupert would pop in at all hours to say hi. We even caught him on our security cameras after we had gone to bed, waiting patiently at the door to see if we would make an appearance.

The curious thing was though, Rupert was afraid of other people. If he heard a car drive by or any voices, he would run down and hide in the bromeliads, returning once the 'threat' was gone. He trusted us, we were his people.

Then one night, Rupert didn't show. We live in farm country where foxes are hunted but I like to think that Rupert found a girlfriend and chose to move to a different area.

We miss our furry little man but it was such a unique friendship and one Jase and I will treasure. He chose us as his people and we became part of his nightly routine. I only hope he enjoyed our company as much as we did his.

I think one of our rescue chickens has spent a little too much time talking to the Eckies.

Nilla Wafer laid the smallest egg I have ever seen from our girls. About a year ago we had three skinny and forlorn looking hens wander into our property and it wasn't long before they decided to adopt us. They are all a healthy weight now, love to sit on our lap when we chill outside, get a kick out of digging up my vegie patch and will do anything for mealie worms or in a pinch, steal their Mommas almonds.

The kids are set for beans for a few days! Our bean vines are producing more than we can handle at the moment so we have frozen a heap for the winter months. I can't believe how prolific they are, if you have a large flock to feed, I highly recommend putting in some heirloom seeds as they certainly pay off.
