In healthy dogs, a**l glands naturally empty with the pressure of normal bowel movements.

However, without enough pressure or with mushy stool, they don’t, and that can lead to inflammation, impaction, or infection. 💩

People often turn to manual expression for prevention, performed by either a vet or a groomer. But this can do more harm than good. For one thing, every manual expression carries the risk of introducing bacteria, thus setting things in motion for infection.

Also, repeated squeezing traumatizes those delicate ducts, leading to chronic inflammation and long-term damage that affects the gland’s function.

Unless there’s an acute medical reason, it’s better to leave healthy glands alone.

How do you prevent mushy stool which could lead to a**l gland problems?

🥩Feed a raw meaty bones diet
Promote a healthy gut microbiome
🐾Help your dog get plenty of exercise

In the meantime, adding powdered slippery elm herb to your dog’s meals can help. For small dogs, start with ¼ tsp. per day and increase up to 1 tsp. For large breeds, adjust according to size. Make sure filtered water is available at all times. 💦

🐾 What are Flower Essences? 🌸

Flower essences, also known as flower remedies, are drops made from flower petals whose vibrational energy, or essence, is transferred to water through a special process. Hi folks,

Hope the dogs are all well and well-fed.

In a slight departure from the norm, we thought we'd each share with you one of our presentations from our recent South African trip!

I (Conor) am going to start as we all agreed I was the soundest, so I'm going to give you my talk on the problems around the vitamin and mineral supplementation of pets, with particular and very MAJOR focus on the current AAFCO nutrient guidelines.

Major revelations afoot, particularly around calcium, but to be honest, each and every one is a car crash in its own right.
