A lot of dairy animals are “freshening” (giving birth), and so milking season has begun. One item always needed is udder wash.

A quick internet search will bring up many homemade udder wash formulations and numerous commercial brands available. I developed a formula for use with my dairy goats (originally for my cow) because I prefer non-toxic products and also appreciate being able to make things inexpensively at home.

I like to use a 32 oz. spray bottle, which is handy, sanitary, and easy to direct right where you want it.

Lavender essential oil has antibacterial properties, while peppermint has an anti-inflammatory action and promotes good circulation in the udder.

When mosquitos or flies are a problem, I also add a couple drops of an essential oil blend called Purification for its insect-repelling properties. It’s much nicer for everyone when flying pests aren’t a bother at milking time!

Natural Udder Wash

Distilled water
½ tsp. of organic liquid castile soap (plain, no scent)
10 drops peppermint essential oil*
10 drops lavender essential oil*
7 drops lemon essential oil* (opt)

Put water in a spray bottle, and then add soap and essential oils. Give a quick shake to mix. Shake before each use.

Note: I only use and recommend Young Living essential oils due to their high-quality, Seed-to-Seal ethics.

Dogs are carnivores. End of story.

This excellent graphic depicts some of the reasons why we know this. It was made by one of my teachers in Animal Naturopathy, the late Dr. Jeannie Thomason, with my colleague and animal chiropractor, Dr. Erin O’Connor.

With spring fast approaching, thoughts often turn to gardening.

Did you know that you can grow a lot of food for your animals even in a relatively small garden space? We like to grow greens and roots veg for our stock.

Part of dog and puppy wellness is dental care. The first step in this, of course, is a quality raw diet.

Even on a raw diet, oral health needs to be monitored, especially if you feed a ground diet. The best way is to get in the habit of doing basic teeth cleaning. For the average raw fed dog, a weekly cleaning should be sufficient.

Here’s how: wrap a 3”x3” cotton gauze square around your index finger, holding the end with your thumb, swipe a little coconut oil on it, and gently rub along the teeth. It’s as simple as that!

The gauze is more abrasive and effective than fingertip brushes. You can readily feel that you are rubbing the teeth and not the gums, it’s easier than trying to maneuver a toothbrush, and dogs love the taste of coconut oil, which contains antibacterial properties.

You may need to build up to a full cleaning through several sessions with the gauze and yummy coconut oil, so your dog learns that it’s nothing to be concerned about.
