This one is particularly hard. You might recognize this handsome face from my website (www.truenorthveterinary.ca).
Finn has been a patient and friend since I returned from the UK. Seeing this boy always put a smile on my face (and usually some degree of giggling or belly laughing!).
Rest easy Finn. Wherever you are I hope there are fences to jump, loved ones to cuddle, fields to run in and all the treats you ever dreamed of!

Happy 8th Birthday to this little Spud-Head!
Brian has been a part of our family since he was 4 weeks old. He has beaten the odds time and time again, is a world traveler, expert snorer and connoisseur of ANY food. Lots of love to you my little Bri-Guy! We love you (even when you are driving us insane!)

Another sad post.... This week we lost Cuddles. He is actually Squeakers' (feature pets) brother. Cuddles was a very old boy with a whole host of health concerns. He (and his owners) fought hard to make sure he had a good quality of life for as long as possible.
I am so grateful that I was able to give him some relief in his final weeks.
Rest easy Cuddles. You will be so missed.

Yesterday something magic happened in my consult room!
This is Luna.
Luna hate car rides. She becomes stressed and can't settle.
Luna also hates the vets. She has always been anxious- panting and pacing- at any vet consult she has ever been to.
So a car ride to the vets is never enjoyable for this little lady!
She always arrives panting. She spends the whole consult pacing..... but not this time!
After 6-8 weeks of treating Luna she has finally allowed herself to settle and relax. She actually SLEPT in the consult room and her car journey home!
This will be from becoming more relaxed with me and the routine of having acupuncture, but also from the lovely endorphins her brain is releasing when we do acupuncture! This is just part of the body's own pain relieving options.
I nearly cried I was so happy to see Luna finally relax and settle! Fingers crossed it continues!

We are closed this week to celebrate my Birthday (yep, it's a big one)!
I will not be checking email/phone, so if you have an urgent concern or emergency please contact your regular vet!
I am back on the 20th and will respond then! 🥰

I have recently found about about the loss of a patient of mine: Indy. A brave little cat who fought hard against the odds for a long time. It was my pleasure to be a part of his care team.

It is the season of the witch.....but is herbal medicine just witchcraft?!
The answer is NO! (although I do feel like I am mixing potions when blending!)
Many herbs/plants have quite a bit of research and evidence backing their use.
In western herbal medicine we look at the traditional uses for a plant and then ask:
1) Does it, indeed, have those effects?
2) How/Why does it have those effects?
3) Are there any side effects or risks to using it?
As a veterinary herbalist I have the training to not only choose herbs that are useful for your pet and their condition, but also know what plants may not be suitable due to illnesses or other medications being taken.
Just because something is natural does not mean it is 100% safe- this is why it is so important to consult a vet trained in herbal medicine before starting your pet on something.
I love the magic of plants as medicines.....but I also love the science of how that magic works!

Why Integrated Medicine?
I began my career as a first opinion/GP vet at a small animal hospital in Lancashire for several years. While there I obtained my ESVPS certificate in Chronic Pain Management and Western Veterinary Acupuncture. This lead to me starting a pain clinic at the practice I was working for.
The more I worked on the pain clinic the more I came to appreciate the holistic/integrated approach to veterinary medicine. It became clear to me that there was more to it than just medications.
I started looking at courses and training in other areas to expand my abilities and repertoire of treatment options for my patients. These courses included physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic, nutrition, raw feeding, and herbal medicine. I have since become a veterinary herbalist and continue my education in all areas of veterinary medicine.
I am now running my own referral service for integrated clinics and pain assessments. Because of the training I have I am able to use both complimentary therapies with conventional medicines (as needed) to give animals the best quality of life we can.
In my opinion it is not a case of conventional versus complimentary. Both can be used individually or combined to give optimal results for your pet. For me it is about looking at the animal as a whole, getting to know them (and the owners) and finding a treatment plan that is tailored specifically to the individual.
I am passionate about what I do and eager learn. I keep the lines of communication open with my clients and am happy discuss all available options (and research ones I’ve not heard of). I love to teach and like to take a very honest and open approach to the way I treat my patients and their owners!
