Going to the vet can be scary- but most patients end up liking their acupuncture treatments!
Animals make associations very quickly and it doesn't take long for them to realise that what I am doing makes them feel good.
It is one of the few things that I do, as a vet, that the animal actually thanks me for!

This really is the best job ever!

Pain is a very individualised experience. No two people exerience it 100% the same way, even if they ave the same considtion or diagnosis. This is the same for our pets. Each is unique in how they experience and express their pain.
Some eat less, some comfort eat.
Some drink more.
Some withdraw from family life, others become very needy/clingy.

It isn't always as straight forward as whether or not they are going on walks or eating their meals.
This is why my initial pain assessment is long. These initial assessments last around 1.5-2hours, and a good amount of that time is me asking behavioural, lifestyle and physical ability questions. This help me to determine how much pain is affecting quality of life but also to pick out the individual 'tells' for each patient.

If you think your pet may have pain or discomfort, but you just aren't sure....give us at call at True North Vet!

Spring is in the air!!!!
I love this time of year- everything is coming back to life (including me!) 🌱🌿🌷🌻
I've been getting out for walks on the Grand river more and more. It's magical watching the world come back to life.

I love seeing all of the dandelions lining the trail. These incredible plants are so much more than 'just weeds'!
They help pollinators, like bees, in the early season.... But also, the leaves can be used in salad/to eat and both the roots and leaves have amazing medicinal properties!

I use different parts of dandelion in my clinic for a number of things including to aid in digestion, liver support and as a diuretic!

Let's give this powerhouse plants a re-brand brand from weeds to 'hero plant's!!! 💪🏻🌼

This is Jerri's first acupuncture session last week. To begin with she was not entirely convinced, but by the end she was purring and relaxed!

Acupuncture can be a very potent form of pain relief and cats are particularly good responders! Over the next few weeks I will post more about how acupuncture works and why your pet may benefit! 😻🐱🐯🦁

If you think your pet may benefit from acupuncture- get in touch!

I was going to do this sooner as a New Year post, but it has been tough to write....

Over the last 2 months I have slowly said goodbye to all of my UK patients (and their owners) as I prepare for my family’s big move to Canada.

It has been so difficult but the love that you have all shown me these past few months has been overwhelming. I have tried to keep a brave face- although some of you did have to deal with my tears!

I just wanted to post to thank everyone who has made my time as a vet in the UK so special, especially as True North Veterinary Wellness. I cannot thank you all enough for trusting me with your pets care and for allowing me into your lives. It truly has been an honour to help your family members.

I will be back to posting on facebook once I am settled in Canada, so watch this space!

Sending so much gratitude and love!

An important message from a very knowledgable colleague and friend!

An important message from a very knowledgable colleague and friend!

A quickie on guilt …

At the moment huge numbers of people in the UK and likes elsewhere are struggling financially. It is great how much owners care about feeding their dog, but for those who can’t, it’s important to stop the guilt.

Right now the most important thing is that your dog is fed, and that the food provides what they need. This means raw, cooked, kibble, tins - any kind of food. Do not feel bad. What is most important right now is that everyone can pay their bills, and that dogs are fed.

Tips:

- If coasting a pet shop aisle - whatever the kind of food look for the word ‘complete’.

Complete means that it is likely to contain the nutrients your dog needs. Let’s step away from our more subtle pros and cons lists on supplement types and processing on this just now. If you need food to be cheap, any *complete* is GOOD ENOUGH for now.

I’ve had pets in the vets that have been eating just mixer biscuit (not remotely balanced) for months and months … this is different and it is genuinely dangerous feed only a mixer type product. It may result in vet visits that cost far more than the food saved…

- You CAN feed part raw part kibble - it does not have to be all or nothing. If you need to save some money but still want to use part raw or home cooked - you can. This is what I am doing right now.

- DO take care with cheap raw completes… many are made with very cheap boney fatty cuts. Good raw completes can be excellent, but dirt cheap ones may actually be a hazard. Personally I would prefer a balanced kibble to a cheap boney fatty raw complete… (there are more of these than you’d think….)

- You CAN feed leftovers if you avoid toxic, high fat and processed foods - avoid all onion family, processed sausages etc, and check gravy! Most gravy contains onions salt and often MSG. Unbalanced leftovers should ideally not make up more than 10% of overall intake and you should be most careful about balance in growing dogs

I have had some financially dire times in the past where my dogs ate the cheapest kibble I could find alongside leftovers and eggs - because - for me - it was better to keep my dogs and keep them fed than to panic about not being able to afford fresh food at that moment. They are fine, I’m fine.

Most importantly right now - do not feel guilty, and for those who are still lucky enough to be financially able to feed good quality fresh food please try hard not to make others feel bad if they can’t. The raw feeding world is sometimes a very vocal one and conversations can get pretty heated on social media - I hope that some of the raw vet followers can be the voice of reason elsewhere and help those struggling to feel supported and not judged.

Hope everyone is doing ok.

In the midst of all of that I (along with my amazing colleague Anna Rodriguez) have been working away at a herbal course for Veterinary Nurses!!! Our vet course has been so popular and many nurses have asked for one as well.....so we did it!

Why Integrated Medicine?

I began my career as a first opinion/GP vet at a small animal hospital in Lancashire for several years. While there I obtained my ESVPS certificate in Chronic Pain Management and Western Veterinary Acupuncture. This lead to me starting a pain clinic at the practice I was working for.

The more I worked on the pain clinic the more I came to appreciate the holistic/integrated approach to veterinary medicine. It became clear to me that there was more to it than just medications.

I started looking at courses and training in other areas to expand my abilities and repertoire of treatment options for my patients. These courses included physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, chiropractic, nutrition, raw feeding, and herbal medicine. I have since become a veterinary herbalist and continue my education in all areas of veterinary medicine.

I am now running my own referral service for integrated clinics and pain assessments. Because of the training I have I am able to use both complimentary therapies with conventional medicines (as needed) to give animals the best quality of life we can.
