Oregon Horse Rescue

We are located west of Eugene, Oregon. Our mission is to provide a safe and supportive forever home. Since then, we have saved about 130 horses.

Oregon Horse Rescue was started by Jane and David Kelly; our first horse was rescued in November of 2012. Our horses have come from a variety of sources – surrender by owner, auction yard, referrals from Lane County Animal Services, veterinarians or other rescue operations. The sanctuary property is 70 gently sloping acres west of Eugene, Oregon. It is subdivided into a number of smaller pastures

to allow compatible horses to be placed together in smaller groups. Multiple structures provide stalls and shelters. We have no paid administrative staff. We rely on donations from our founders and the public for our expenses. We were registered as an Oregon non-profit corporation on April 8, 2013. We have received tax exempt 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service retroactive to that date. Thus, all donations made to O.H.R. are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

Today was dental day for four of our oldest horses (all over 30 years old): One of our vets, Dr. Kathy Connell, “floated” the teeth of Xena, Allah, Country, and Cisco. This process uses an electric-powered file to smooth off sharp edges and hooks to improve the horse’s chewing.

It is hard to keep weight on elderly horses, and floating can significantly improve their intake of nutrients. Sometimes with “oldies”, loose teech are found and pulled during this work. Today, Xena and Allah both ended the day one tooth lighter than they started it.

A quick reminder that this Sunday there's another enjoyable evening to help the horses! The Springfield Eagles are hosting us once again this Sunday, June 9th. The menu this time is chicken enchiladas, rice pilaf, pinto beans, and cupcakes for dessert. This meal will be served alongside live music - the event starts at 5pm, or you can come when the music starts at 6. 100% of proceeds from the $10 admission fee will support Oregon Horse Rescue. We hope you can make it!

Barn Cat helps us with feeding

Our barn cat thinks she's a farm dog! Kitty Kitty trots along with the ATV as we do our evening feeding and welfare checks.

Our rescue horse One-Eyed Jack was adopted about two years ago by a wonderful family. Here he is now, continuing to learn new skills at his forever home. And to think we once had a trainer say he was a dangerous horse!?!?!

Nana Rose says: "That nice huge green scratching brush you installed? No thanks, I'll use this tree right next to it instead."

We have a new arrival - a 22-year-old Icelandic mare named Petite! Here, our blind mini Honeybun trots out to meet her. Honeybun is a lot more interested in Petite than vice versa! Once we complete evaluation on Petite, she'll go up on our website as available for adoption.

The other day, our blind mini Honeybun was feeling upbeat and adventurous. So, she ventured into the big oldies pasture with 37-year-old Nana Rose and 40-year-old Dusty2. A good time was had by all!

The OHR Story

Oregon Horse Rescue was started by Jane and David Kelly; our first horse was rescued in November of 2012. Since then, we have saved many more horses – our estimate is that more than 100 horses have been helped by our organization since our inception just a few years ago. Our horses have come from a variety of sources – surrender by owner, abandonment, auction yard, referrals from Lane County Animal Services, veterinarians, or other rescue operations. Many of our horses come in underweight with low body scores, while some are obese and foundered. Some horses are dealing with anxiety, blindness, or other debilitating medical or behavioral issues that require time, patience, and resources in order to heal. After intake, we evaluate horses and place them into one of our programs as an adoptable horse eligible to be rehomed, or as a sanctuary resident that will spend their life at Oregon Horse Rescue’s facility. OHR’s property is 70 gently sloping acres west of Eugene, Oregon. It is subdivided into a number of smaller pastures to allow compatible horses to be placed together in smaller groups. Multiple structures provide stalls and shelters. We rely on donations from our founders and the public for our expenses. We were registered as an Oregon non-profit corporation on April 8, 2013.
