Our Story
Ellie is a six-year-old Goffin’s Cockatoo with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Acquired by Jen Cunha at the age of fourteen weeks, Ellie learned tricks, colors, numbers and counting at lightning speed… and Jen began to worry about how she would keep up with this youngster’s brain.
Jen tried to console her with many toys and foraging activities, but nothing quite appeased Ellie like the challenge of learning. Jen thought, “If she could learn to read, there’d be no end to her learning.” One summer’s evening in 2016, Jen picked up the letter “A”, grabbed an apple from the refrigerator, and said to Ellie, “This is an apple. It is a word, and it begins with the letter ‘A’.”
Within two weeks Ellie began reading short, one-syllable words, and has since learned all of the uppercase and lowercase alphabet, can read fresh-impression three-syllable words, can count, add and subtract up to seven. She is learning classical music composers and pieces (Bach is her life’s love), and is working on expressions of ‘inner-state’ – such as feeling labels and beliefs about living and inanimate objects.
