Let us take a moment to marvel at the cuteness of Kilo (3-month-old German Shepherd Dog) and his floppy ears. Also, Kilo gets bonus points for holding his down-stay while I snap this picture!

Did you know that while a puppy's ears start to stand up, their ears can drop back down if they are teething or sleepy? Now you do!

Bugatti (5 1/2 year old Greyhound) did so well in their down-stay practice this week I think he may have caught a quick mid-class nap. That was, until I bothered him for a photo!

Great work Bugatti, we love your commitment! 😆

Appreciation post for Shelby, one of the cutest German Shepherd Dog puppies I have ever worked with!

Not only is she pretty, she is incredibly smart! Her owner, Dave, has been doing a fantastic job raising Shelby and navigating all the fun that is puppy raising! Shelby took our Puppy STAR class in November and then jumped right into the Beginning Obedience class we started this week!

Keep making us proud Shelby!

Our student spotlight this week features Deb and her "Heinz 57 dog" Mojo. Deb brought Mojo to his first group class this past Summer to help Mojo work through some reactivate-defensive behaviors.

Deb found Mojo through "Adopt a Pet" in Fenton, Michigan after he had been picked up by animal control all the way down in Arkansas! Once Mojo came home, Deb ran a DNA test on Mojo to learn as much as she could about him. It came back with one of the largest lists of breeds I have ever seen! Mojo is; 36% Chihuahua, 22% Dachshund, 13% Australian Cattle Dog, 9% Yorkshire Terrier, 3% Rat Terrier, 2% Toy Fox Terrier, 2% American Hairless Terrier, 1% Parson Russell Terrier, 1% Russell Terrier, 1% German Hunting Terrier, 3% Pembroke Welsh Corgi, 2% Border Collie, 3% American Cocker Spaniel, 1% Labrador Retriever, 1% Poodle (Toy and Miniature)!

Here is what Deb had to say about Mojo's progress. "When we first got Mojo, he was a very good dog. He didn't get into things and was housebroken, but whenever anyone else was around, he became terrified. He would bark, growl, and try to bite, even with other dogs! We worked with a trainer one-on-one, which helped me understand what Mojo needed, but he still needed a lot of practice being around other dogs and people.
That's when Riverside came in. They helped me understand how to handle Mojo around other dogs and people and gave us a lot of practice. Emma and Gail worked hard to gain Mojo's trust and help Mojo understand how to behave. Soon, Mojo loved going to the classes and on the walks. He even aced the Good Citizen test! He now allows us to have friends and family over.
If he is unsure of what to do he will look to us for direction. Our friends comment on how much he has changed in the last year! Mojo is a smart little dog and now a wonderful companion!"

We are very thankful for Deb's perseverance and hard work, which brought out the best in Mojo! Well done, Deb; we are very proud of you and Mojo!

We hope you have a peaceful Thanksgiving tomorrow! We all know our pets are part of the family, and it is easy to want to share the festivities with them - including the great food!

Please remember that our dogs can not eat the same foods we can. Thanksgiving day usually correlates with an uptick in emergency vet visits, caused mainly by the extra and often unsafe "human" food.

Who We Are

Hello and thank you for stopping by! Riverside Dog Training offers group class and private lesson options to help you create a better working partnership between you and your dog. Group classes are taught by the mother-daughter team of Emma Wikstrom and Gail Roderick with private lessons available with Emma. Gail started her career in dogs in 1975 at the age of seventeen working at Wyndeen Kennels. She then transitioned into grooming and opened The Puppy Tub in 1986 in Lowell Michigan. Along with that at nineteen she took over leadership of Working Paws 4-H Club and continues to be the Key Leader as well as the Superintendent of the Kent County Youth Fair Dog Project to this day. Emma's story starts practically from birth. Emma spent her pre-school years at the grooming shop learning how to read dog behavior and learning from her mom on a daily basis. In 1999 she joined the Working Paws 4-H club at the age of 5 and really started learning how to train. Through her 14 years in 4-H, she trained and worked with six different dogs of her own as well as helping to mentor the younger members in her later years in the club. As she moved into her teens she began showing through the American Kennel Club and was the #1 ranked Junior Performance Handler in the AKC in 2011 and 2012. Currently, Emma is a leader for Working Paws 4-H and the Assistant Superintendent for the Kent County Youth Fair Dog Project and entering into her 20th year showing and training dogs. With over 65 years of combined dog training experience, we know you will leave your classes with a balanced working partnership between you and your dog.
