**Student Shout-Out!**

We want to give a special shout-out to Kayla and her one-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog, Ella, who just completed their Beginning Obedience class this past week!

Ella was adopted from a hoarding situation, where she lived with nine of her siblings. This challenging start in life impacted her early socialization, leaving her with a few quirks for Kayla to work through.

During our first class, Ella appeared nervous and unsure of how to protect herself and Kayla. However, it was clear that they shared a deep bond, which became the foundation for Ella's remarkable progress.

We worked slowly with Ella to help her understand that she could rely on Kayla for guidance and leadership. Kayla excelled in this role, becoming a confident leader for Ella, which allowed her to relax and listen.

Thanks to Kayla's hard work, Ella now walks beautifully on a leash, comes when called, and feels much more at ease knowing that Kayla has her back. Ella is a shining example of the freedom a dog can gain when their confidence is boosted, and they learn to trust their handler completely.

The Riverside crew is incredibly proud of both Kayla and Ella and we are honored to have been a part of their journey!

Poor Huck is forced to nap on the cold floor, not a dog bed in sight. Unless you count the one he has his head pressed into…or the other two beds in the background. 🤣

Is anyone else’s dogs still tired out after yesterday’s festivities?

Callum (1 year old German Shepherd Dog) did a great job working on his “leave-it” skill in class this last week! This skill focuses on teaching the dogs to ignore a distraction (in this case a tasty treat tossed on the ground) and be rewarded for giving their eye contact to their handler instead!

Callum has been improving leaps and bounds week to week, and he is so fun to watch in class! Well done Callum, we are very proud of you!

Who We Are

Hello and thank you for stopping by! Riverside Dog Training offers group class and private lesson options to help you create a better working partnership between you and your dog. Group classes are taught by the mother-daughter team of Emma Wikstrom and Gail Roderick with private lessons available with Emma. Gail started her career in dogs in 1975 at the age of seventeen working at Wyndeen Kennels. She then transitioned into grooming and opened The Puppy Tub in 1986 in Lowell Michigan. Along with that at nineteen she took over leadership of Working Paws 4-H Club and continues to be the Key Leader as well as the Superintendent of the Kent County Youth Fair Dog Project to this day. Emma's story starts practically from birth. Emma spent her pre-school years at the grooming shop learning how to read dog behavior and learning from her mom on a daily basis. In 1999 she joined the Working Paws 4-H club at the age of 5 and really started learning how to train. Through her 14 years in 4-H, she trained and worked with six different dogs of her own as well as helping to mentor the younger members in her later years in the club. As she moved into her teens she began showing through the American Kennel Club and was the #1 ranked Junior Performance Handler in the AKC in 2011 and 2012. Currently, Emma is a leader for Working Paws 4-H and the Assistant Superintendent for the Kent County Youth Fair Dog Project and entering into her 20th year showing and training dogs. With over 65 years of combined dog training experience, we know you will leave your classes with a balanced working partnership between you and your dog.
