PRIORITIZING FAULTS IN THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER
© GRCA Judges’ Education 2019
As noted in an article about prioritizing faults in Canine Chronicle: "This is not intended to promote fault or part judging. Nor is it to imply that any characteristic called for in the standard is unimportant. Judging, and breeding, is about prioritizing and about what the judge or breeder will forgive. Discussing priorities can help in learning how to better evaluate a breed." (AKC Judge Nikki Riggsbee)
The following is a suggested priority list from the GRCA Judges’ Education Committee, based on AKC rules and the wording in the breed standard. While the faults and penalties listed are those specifically noted in the standard, this does NOT mean other faults which may not be mentioned are free of appropriate penalty. Any deviation from the breed standard is a fault to the extent it deviates from the standard, would affect the ability of the dog to perform its breed function, or would affect the health and well-being of the dog.
“Overall appearance, balance, gait and purpose to be given more emphasis than any of his component parts. Faults-Any departure from the described ideal in the AKC standard shall be considered faulty to the degree to which it interferes with the Golden Retriever’s purpose or is contrary to breed character.” (AKC breed standard for the Golden Retriever)
