PRIORITIZING FAULTS IN THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER
© GRCA Judges’ Education 2019

As noted in an article about prioritizing faults in Canine Chronicle: "This is not intended to promote fault or part judging. Nor is it to imply that any characteristic called for in the standard is unimportant. Judging, and breeding, is about prioritizing and about what the judge or breeder will forgive. Discussing priorities can help in learning how to better evaluate a breed." (AKC Judge Nikki Riggsbee)

The following is a suggested priority list from the GRCA Judges’ Education Committee, based on AKC rules and the wording in the breed standard. While the faults and penalties listed are those specifically noted in the standard, this does NOT mean other faults which may not be mentioned are free of appropriate penalty. Any deviation from the breed standard is a fault to the extent it deviates from the standard, would affect the ability of the dog to perform its breed function, or would affect the health and well-being of the dog.

“Overall appearance, balance, gait and purpose to be given more emphasis than any of his component parts. Faults-Any departure from the described ideal in the AKC standard shall be considered faulty to the degree to which it interferes with the Golden Retriever’s purpose or is contrary to breed character.” (AKC breed standard for the Golden Retriever)

Disqualifications:
• Deviation in height of more than one inch from standard either way.
• Undershot or overshot bite.
• Males without two normally descended testicles. (AKC Rules)
• Attacking a person in the ring (DQ by the judge), or attacking and injuring a person or a dog (DQ by the Event Committee). (AKC Rules)

To be excused:
• Dogs showing functional abnormality of the eyelids or eyelashes.
• Dogs that have been altered in appearance. (AKC Rules)
• Dogs that cannot be examined. (AKC Rules)

Serious faults:
• Obvious gaps in dentition.
• Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair.

Very undesirable:
• Excessive length of coat, open coats, and soft limp coats.

Faulted:
• Slant eyes and narrow triangular eyes.
• Low, hound-like ear set.
• Pink nose or one seriously lacking in pigmentation.
• Sloping backline, roach or sway back, flat or steep croup.
• Slab-sidedness, narrow chest, lack of depth in brisket, excessive tuck-up.
• Splayed or hare feet.
• Cow-hocks, spread hocks, and sickle hocks.

Penalized:
• Dogs up to one inch above or below standard should be proportionally penalized.
• Any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, according to its extent.
• Quarrelsomeness or hostility towards other dogs or people in normal situations, or an unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness. Such actions should be penalized according to their significance.

Undesirable:
• Misalignment of teeth or a level bite.
• Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark.

Permitted but not preferred:
• Removal of whiskers.
• Removal of dewclaws on forelegs.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! For those of you preparing for the feast on Thursday, be careful of what you feed to Fido that day. Your dog is safe with Turkey meat, plain potatoes, plain peas, and apples. Don't feed them turkey skin, bones from the Turkey, gravy, stuffing, pumpkin pie, salads with raisins. All of these can get your pet sick and then you will have a visit to the pet emergency. Make sure you have the pet poison hotline listed at home. Their number is 855-764-7661. Also make sure you know where your local pet emergency vet is located in case you do have to visit them that day or over the weekend when your regular vet is closed.

Nothing wrong with sharing with your pet, just be careful
