We wanted to pop-in for a minute and share a story and hopefully help a good friend. If you’ve rescued with Little Hooves Rescue, there’s a 95% chance that Jenni hauled your mini, horse or donkey to us cross-country. She was the only person we ever trusted to take care of our animals on that long journey from Oklahoma. What you may not know, is that she also runs her own rescue, Hearts for Hope Horse Haven, that has saved hundreds of horses from slaughter and does amazing work with veterans. In fact a few of our harder to place horses like Dakota & Fallon or Tank, the mini with breathing issues, ended up calling her sanctuary in the Arizona mountains home. Earlier this year Jenni was diagnosed with a very rare cancer which resulted in needing her left lung removed. The surgery was extensive and her road to recovery is long. She primarily hauled horses each month to cover their rescue expenses and now, being out of work, needs a little help. We are asking one last time to donate to someone who was undeniably crucial to us operating Little Hooves and saving as many animals as we did. Jenni is part of our family now and even made sure she could haul my personal horses to Florida for me before scheduling her surgery. She always puts the people and animals she cares about first. If you have anything to donate, it would mean the world for a team that is under a lot of stress right now ❤️ Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Please share!! We thought we had a plan for Dallas, but it seems to have fallen through 😭 Available for adoption: Dallas was one of our orphaned reservation foals that were at the Bowie Kill Pen along with about 15 others. Now a yearling, Dallas has been learning the ropes and hanging out with his foster family. He’s been handled by kids, been around livestock & dogs, and ready to begin more ground work in preparation for being ridden down the road. Dallas will most likely mature around 14h. He has been living with other horses as well. Currently located in Vista, CA. Adoption fee applies, please contact us for more information!

It is with a heavy heart, I reach out to you all today to announce that Little Hooves Rescue will be closing its doors at the end of the 2023 for the foreseeable future. As many of you many know, this organization is run primarily by myself, Savanah, with the help of some amazing people. I have gotten the chance to follow my heart and accept a new opportunity that will relocate us to the east coast for the next few years. With that said, after many long discussions and serious consideration, it was determined the best course moving forward would be to close the rescue at this time as well.

You have probably noticed we haven’t been taking in as many horses, which was intentional as we figured out what our future was going to be. Our primary goal lately has been, and still is, to find homes for our few remaining horses. Currently we have placed all our minis and only have a few full sized horses remaining for adoption. There have been a lot of moving pieces as we get things settled so I will follow up with which animals are still available in the next week or so.

For the time being, I want to keep it simple and just say thank you. Thank you to this community that has supported us in ways I never could have imagined. Thank you to all our incredible rescue partners, fosters, adopters, vets, farriers, and volunteers that have made this all possible. I never would have thought we would have rescued over 350 animals in just over 4 years. It was a whirlwind and an emotional rollercoaster, but at the end of the day, a journey I will always be grateful for.

I will share more as we wind down, but for now, thank you. Truly.

Chili got to go to his new home today with one of our amazing volunteers! He’s almost unrecognizable from his early photos. His new mom , Amy, fell in love with him during her time at Little Hooves and hopes to share that joy even further by using him for therapy work at a senior home. We sure will miss having his spunky personality at the barn!

Available for adoption as a pair 🧡 Eddie & Wesley are two very sweet and easy geldings. They have been around kids and dogs. Eddie has a few more rounds of farrier to correct his feet to be normal, but they are already significantly better. Halter broke, lead well, good for the farrier, easy to groom, and overall just good boys! Please inquire for more information. Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

Available for adoption! Winter is a 10-12 year old gelding around 14.2h. He does have fibrotic myopathy which is a form of mechanical lameness that occurs when abnormal scar (fibrotic) tissue forms in the muscle, but it doesn’t slow him down. With further vet approval, he may be able to do light trails, but currently we are adopting him out as a companion horse. He’s been turned out with other horses, but lives in his own area right now. Winter tends to keep by himself, but is slowly opening up. He is still a little face shy from coming from a rough previous handler, but is very sweet. Small adoption fee applies. Currently located in Imperial Beach San Diego. We have videos as well for anyone that is interested.

The boys, named Eddie & Wesley by their previous rescue, are here and settled into their foster home! Looking forward to continuing to help Eddie’s feet and get some more weight on Wesley. After a couple weeks of continued TLC they will be available for adoption. We will prefer for them to be adopted as a pair!

We helped get these two minis to their barn after we were asked to step in and help get them out of the Stroud Kill Pen. It’s a stallion with a very crooked, possibly previously broken, leg and his mare who is most likely pregnant. That didn’t stop from stepping up and offering them a spot! They are doing a great job getting them the care they need and looking for some additional help and donations if anyone is able to 🧡

Available for adoption: Gertrude & Marjorie 🧡 Two roughly 15 year old, small standard Jennies (~40” tall) are available for adoption! They are both sweet, but each have their quirks, as donkeys do. Getrude is better about leading & Marjorie is better about her feet. However Marjorie does a decent job just following Gertrude from spot to spot. These girls would do best in a paddock or dry lot as they love to roll in the sand (as you can see by their stained coats). We would ideally find them a home together, however they have done okay being separated and would be allowed to go as singles as long as they have a companion at their new home. Located in Encinitas, CA. Adoption fee applies.

We’ve been contacted about helping two more horses that are owner surrenders. With the rising costs of hay and supplies, rescues are being overwhelmed with these requests. We are able to move some things around and have fosters to help us take them in. Any donations towards their initial care would be greatly appreciated. One is a large about 18h Percheron and the other a 20 year old retired race horse. They both need their feet done, teeth floated, vaccines and the Percheron has some skin issues and sores that will be seen by the vet.

Amara is doing great! She’s been hanging out at a long term fosters and being a buddy to another senior pony that lost his friend earlier this year. Her incision area has healed really nicely and vets were confident she should maintain function of her udder since it was possible she had been bred before or during her time at the kill pen. We will keep an eye on her and test for pregnancy if we start to think she is pregnant.

Miss Gertrude had surgery today to remove a mass in her sinuses! After her CT and surgery, estimated costs from San Luis Rey was going to be from $4,000-$5,000. They did let us know they were able to do a less invasive approach than they originally thought. She will get to come home on Friday!!! We are hoping our incredible supports can help us cover a portion of this vet bill. We appreciate any and all help!
