There will be a bonus screening of a short animation by Zayna, Sofiya, Layla and their parents. We’ll attempt to find a projector before the party 🐌

Hi, I’m Mandy!

I grew up with a massive love for animals and currently have about 7 years of experience working with a variety of them including cats, dogs, rodents, reptiles, fish, birds and now invertebrates. I have a specialist diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care too! I’m a slave to my rescued senior cat, a very sweet girl who inspires me to never stop learning about animal science and care so that I can give her the best possible life.

Cats and reptiles are my favourite animals! I love nature and wildlife too, so I spend lots of time herping and hiking. Really happy to be given an opportunity to work with Dr Angeline and Zheng Hao as they’re such amazing people who go above and beyond to care for not only animals but people and the environment too.

Dr Angeline met Lokto at a clinic they used to work at almost a decade ago. Lokto’s current day job has nothing to do with animals so she kindly agreed to come work for us during the weekends. Lokto has a Singapore special, Kingsley. Kingsley once made a hole in her bedroom door. Kingsley is adorable and tenacious. Kingsley is expensive to keep so Lokto needs extra jobs 🙈🙊
Lokto’s very brief introduction of herself:

Took a vet assistant introductory course in HK and went on to work as vet assistant in local clinics. Left the industry but left a foot in on and off for the pets😅

Hello, I’m Hannah!

I have been working in healthcare for the past decade and during that time, I developed a passion in palliative care for humans. However, in the last two years, I was very fortunate to have been given a chance to care for two geriatric Singapore Specials with very high care needs. During this journey with them, I realized that there is very little support for pet owners with geriatric/palliative pets or pets with high care needs. I also noticed that my passion shifted from palliative care for humans, to providing palliative care and support to pets as well as providing support to their family members as they embark on this journey with their pets.
My dogs taught me how to be patient when things are rough, to love despite past circumstances, to appreciate each new day, and to forgive when things don’t go according to plan.
During my free time, I love experimenting on recipes, reading and bringing my three-legged pup for excursions. I am in the midst of getting fear-free certified and will be looking at attending more courses to provide the best care I can to all pets that cross my path.

Mindy will be our groomer. We got to know her through client E—she grooms client E’s paraplegic dog. Client E’s dog (Lola) is lively, has limited patience and threatens to bite at times. Mindy works with her patiently and Lola likes her even with no food bribes.

Mindy is a little shy to share about herself so we asked her a few questions. Here are her answers:

She is SKC certified “C” Class Groomer since 2018.
She previously had a bunny and now a lovebird.
She started pet grooming because she has always had love for animals and wants to work with them in close proximity while learning to care and provide support for all sorts of pets.

Hi, I’m Josephine!

I started my career as a veterinary nurse at a community animal clinic, where I gained invaluable experience in shelter medicine, providing clinical care and treatment, and supporting companion animals on their road to recovery.
Eager to expand knowledge and skillsets, I took on a Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care, and pursued other nursing programs to supplement my expertise. Now, I’m on an exciting journey as I pursue additional credentialing to be a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner (CCRP).
My goal is to explore non-invasive interventions through positive reinforcement methods to enhance the well-being and quality of life for our furry friends. I am also fear-free certified, so you can rest assured that I’m vested in creating a safe and comfortable environment for all clients that comes under my care

Kandice is the person you will find sitting on the kitchen floor during a house party trying to befriend the resident pet, or on the hiking trail stalking a squirrel. She is an advocate for animal welfare and rights, and has volunteered with animal rescue organisations both in Singapore and abroad.

She first learned about animal rehabilitation while seeking treatment for her rescued German Shepherd, Ari, who has hip dysplasia. It inspired her to begin training as an animal rehabilitation assistant, and she has also since been certified as a Canine Massage Therapist. She is working on deepening her knowledge and skills in the understanding and healing of our animal kin, and hopes to eventually live on an island where there are more beaches than roads, and more happy animals than she can count.

We’ve been back at work for a week or so and it has been nice to see our patients with fresh minds. I’m trying my best to keep this post-vacation lightness and make it last as long as possible.
Commuting from appointment to appointment could be stressful. Unexpected traffic condition, fiery drivers, bad weather, lack of parking space, interactions with grumpy security guards/residents could all add to our anxiety and discomfort. We can’t control external factors so the only way is to manage our perception and improve our comfort.
During our trip, we met many happy animals. They are happy because they’ve freedom to do things they enjoy. Space to run and jump into water, safe neighbourhood for them to explore, lots of time to spend with people they love etc. When we live in a busy city, we sometimes forget that the best things are free. We don’t need more roads or malls or things. We need more free open space and time. We don’t have to plan death/retirement. We accommodate and enjoy life the way we can.
I hope we can create a quiet and peaceful space with fur folks home. We’re slowly moving the project along so we could shape it the way we envision it to be.

Translated to English by Paramesh:
Palliative Care and Pets

The loss of her beloved pet dog, Guru, two years ago devastated 29-year-old Parameshwari. She is still in mourning over Guru, whom she treated with such care. 15-year-old Shih Tzu Guru passed away from bronchitis. Guru was treated as a member of the family.

For the past eight years, Parameshwari has been working as a veterinary nurse. She stresses how important it is to give our pets the best care possible as they age. As humans get older, they tend to resort to end-of-life-care. The same applies to pets.

From an early age, Parameshwari has cared for various species of animals and birds. She was inspired to work with animals by this.

Parameshwari is involved in the responsibilities of assisting veterinarians with daily tasks. She also counsels owners on the value of palliative care at the same time. It’s crucial to take our pets to the veterinarian for examinations bi-yearly once they turn seven years old.

Palliative care education is not as widespread in Singapore as it is in other nations, such as Australia or America. She advises that this needs to gradually increase.

Pets in Singapore do not have access to hospice care facilities and most of them are cared for in their homes. In Singapore, some pet owners choose to keep their elderly pets without giving them the proper care they need, preferring to let them pass away naturally.

When a sickness or illness worsens and significantly impairs a pet’s quality of life, euthanasia is performed. But it is important to provide the pet the care it needs before deciding to put it to sleep.

Guru was on oxygen therapy and asthmatic medications. On some months, Parameshwari had to pay up to $500 for Guru’s medical expenses. According to her, several pet owners worry about the expense that comes with palliative care.

Last year, we had a movie day. We watched “A street cat named Bob” together. I didn’t think it was that successful an event because we could have more people and we forgot to take a group picture. ZH and I are introverts. We don’t like crowds. After the event, we told ourselves it would be a while before we host an event like this again. We were glad it was over.

In retrospect, I am thankful that we hosted an event like that. We brought people to the movies, people who may not ever go to the movies. The Cathay closed down shortly after and 2 of the movie-goers left Earth. We are grateful for that day because I could still remember our interactions that day. Thank you for being part of our memory.

ZH and I started VetMobile because we see a niche and I didn’t want to return to usual vet work. ZH, supportive as always, agreed to be my partner/assistant. He gave me the courage and confidence that I didn’t have. Despite our general demeanour, I am the pessimist and he’s the optimist. It isn’t easy to work with your spouse. We learn as we go along.

We gain clients/friends and lose some. It is OK—our service may not be suitable for everyone. We have a full-time nurse who puts her heart in her work and an ad-hoc staff. We have to hire soon so please email us if you have something to contribute and see yourself as a good fit. My goal in life is to live freely and to contribute positively to the community around me. Thank you for being part of it.

Our job deals with death a lot—Palliative care cases, euthanasia cases, sudden death cases.
Death is never easy and it definitely didn’t get easier for me. Ever since I was a kid, I wonder where the mind went after death. There are cultural and religious beliefs that could explain them but I haven’t fully subscribe to any of them.
I’m writing this for those who have lost and love. Please do not stop loving just because they may go one day. Knowing that there are many more animals I could take in encourages me to move on with the grief. Take the grief along and trudge on. Your motivation could be different from mine but I’m certain more animals will benefit from having you around.
Glad I could finally put these all down in words🧡
Deepest condolences to all who’ve lost recently🧡

Another food for thought
*all about 💰?*
I’ve heard people saying things like “I don’t trust vets because they’re in it for the money”. They use that as an excuse not to seek professional help. I’m sure people say the same about doctors and other professionals.
The counter-argument is always about how tough it is to get certified, how expensive tuition fee is and how demanding the job is.
Let’s forget about that argument and think about it from another point of view. The pet industry is booming! 💥 It is growing so fast that big companies are getting in to invest/ eat some pie. What your vets are trying to earn from you is only a small part.
Pet food/treats/toys/supplements/accessories/pharmaceuticals are definitely more lucrative. The bigger companies have a team of people just to market them to you!
Before you decide to buy that “amazing” product (I’ve seen products claiming to treat everything but there were no ingredient list) off the shelf to treat your pet’s severe skin issue, it may be better to check with your vet first.

*Caregiver fatigue and quality of life*
This is something I would like to share more of in the future. Here are a few thoughts 🧡
Less could be more. Giving your non-human companion more supplements or treatments (non-essential) may not be beneficial for both of you. You’ll have less time to enjoy quality time together because of all the fussing about.
Choose the easier way to do things. For instance, if pilling is difficult, choose a formula that is palatable enough to be mixed into meals. Or get a long-acting injection if it’s available! If a supplement is tough to feed, give it up! It’s just a supplement!
Think about your own quality of life as well as theirs. A sad/angry/frustrated/dull home isn’t a good home to live in.

Some rules/opinions are not based on facts/science. They may be hearsay/superstition/. You don’t have to accept things as they are especially if you can adapt/change it to make your household better.
If this is something you are interested in, we could share more in the future :)
