Amazing advice from the Pet Professional Network for your dog's this Fireworks season 🎆

Comfort your dog as much as they need it and follow these tips for a better and easier experience all round 🐾❤

FIREWORKS ADVICE!

If you have a rescue dog, or a dog who has experienced a recent trauma, they may be particularly sensitive to fireworks (the same is true for small animals and birds).

So here's a few tips to help you prepare for the fireworks and to help keep your pets safe and calm:

1. WALK YOUR DOG EARLY

Try to take your dog for a walk before 3pm, or as early as possible; be mindful that some people may even let fireworks off before it gets dark!

Remember: if your dog has already experienced fireworks in a particular area, going back to that same area may bring back the anxiety.

2. KEEP PETS INSIDE DURING FIREWORK DISPLAYS

Make sure your dog is taken out to go to toilet earlier. Where possible, bring cats and small animals inside. Rabbits, guinea pigs and birds in aviaries are particularly vulnerable.

3. OCCUPY THEM WITH ENRICHMENT OR PLAYTIME

Provide your pet with an alternative outlet, to keep anxiety at bay. A nice filled Kong, a puzzle game or a simple game of 'find it'.

4. HELP SOOTHE YOUR PET WITH MUSIC

Music can help to block out some of the noise and certain types have been proven to have a calming effect. You can also turn up the volume on the TV, to make the *bangs* seem less dramatic in comparison to the volume inside the house..

5. REASSURE THEM

Do not punish your dog for showing fearful behaviour. If they are frightened - it is okay to comfort them.

You can reassure your dog. Contrary to what you may hear, it is not possible to reinforce an emotion (e.g. fear). Please do not punish your dog if it is fearful or anxious.

We advise, where possible, staying inside - partcularly on firework's night - to keep your pets safe and to give them company and support.

We always advise pet owners to seek further advice from a behaviourist or trainer working closely with a vet.

They will work with you on a behavioural modification programme and, in certain cases, vets can recommend drugs/therapy/holistic remedies to help keep your dog calm and relaxed.

Preparation is the key - so please keep this advice handy, especially over the festive period and new year's eve.

Blue 💙

I met this gorgeous boy today and he showed me alllll the love 🥰

We started work on building some solid focus cues to teach him an alternative to scavenging everything and anything he can!

He smashed it and I can't wait to see his progress 🌟

I met this beautiful boy at the beginning of the week 💙

This is Bear 🐻 His human got in touch to start working on some behaviours that have been getting progressively worse over time 🙁

He likes to chase shadows and light reflections which is making his recall non-existent! He also is nervous of traffic if having to walk alongside any roads 😟

We started with some focus building exercises to build more value in his human. We also discussed introducing a positive interrupter for when he's chasing shadows so we can stop him practicing the behaviour as soon as possible! It has also been discussed that he may be in some sort of pain which is making him display the shadow chasing behaviour - we will be exploring this by getting him checked over by a vet/physio!

Management is a key factor in stopping our dogs practicing unwanted behaviours so we have implemented lots of management and increased his daily mental stimulation to see how things go 🥰

Looking forward to working with him and his family going forward 🐾

🌟 Lottie 🌟

Lovely Lottie and her family are halfway through their Puppy Preschool Package with me and absolutely smashing their training so far 👏

Lottie's family have never had a puppy before so they wanted my help in making sure she was getting started off on the right paw from an early age 🥰

We have talked through all of those classic puppy issues from puppy biting, toilet training, crate training, getting used to being left alone, her first walk, nutrition AND got started on her training journey to ensure she's focused on her humans more than anything else 🤓

Lots more fun to be had over the next couple of weeks now that she's almost allowed out on her first walk 🤩

We had our first class at the new venue in Lochwinnoch on Sunday morning and welcomed a class full of new puppies ❤

We played a little sniffy game at the start of class and worked a lot on focus building which is vital for keeping our puppies interested in their human!

This gorgeous girl worked so hard at her training session this evening, she had to have a nap before I even left 🤣❤

Luna is absolutely smashing all of her training! Her family are looking into potentially using her as a sniffer dog in the future so we're going to be introducing some scent work into her sessions going forward to give her a basic understanding of identifying a specific scent 👃

I'm really looking forward to seeing her progress! She's such a little superstar already 🌟

Puppy FUNdations is suitable for puppies right up until the age of 9 months. You'll learn all of the vital puppy basics from walking nicely on the lead to coming back when called and everything in between!

Need to walk the dog but don't have much time on your hands?

Why not try playing THE SAUSAGE TREE? 😋

All you have to do is find a tree with some good bark grooves, get a soft treat (like sausage or chicken) and stick them all around the tree for your dog to find.

Up high, down low, around the bottom, ANYWHERE 😁

Then just let your dog's nose do the work 🐶

It's great when you don't have much time to get the steps in during a walk but need to tire them out 😴

🌟 Dougal 🌟

This young man and his guardian have just finished their sessions with me where we really focused on recall 🗣

Dougal is generally great off lead but sometimes, he would get himself in to trouble and give his parents a fright when he would run over to other dogs and people 🙈

He only wanted to play but his parents knew that this wasn't acceptable behaviour!

We worked on building lots of focus in his guardian and made sure he knew how fun recall can be 🥳

Well done Dougal, you smashed it 👏
