My Story

17 years ago, I fell in love with my first Standard Schnauzer. I made the journey to Canada and met with Dinsdale Standard Schnauzers and brought home my little bundle of joy, "Tink". At that point in time, we had a large horse farm and family, and wanted a dog that fit in well on the farm and would be a good watch dog and family pet. She fit the bill perfectly. Tink taught me what these German farm dogs were bred for. Although she had no formal training as far as hunting and herding were concerned, she taught me that Standard Schnauzers were bred with the instinct to kill vermin and be a general helpful farm hand. She could herd the cattle, hunt and kill mice and rats and watch over my kids. Tink was one of a kind, and proved to be the smartest dog that I ever shared space with. In 2010, after I became an empty nester, the kids were all off on their own, I began my journey to find another Standard Schnauzer bitch that I could show. My goal was to find a great dog that I could show, title, health test and eventually breed and start my own kennel. I very much liked the Charisma bred dogs and planned on obtaining a dog from Blackhawk kennels in California. I was on a waiting list for over a year, however the bitch was having some problems with breeding and Paul and Rhonda suggested that I contact Joyce Mullan from Castlewood as they had the full sister to the female that I wanted a pup from. Joyce had a bitch named Blackhawk Brie, who was bred to the Westminster winner, Shalimars Golden Ticket. After speaking with Joyce several times and developing a relationship with her, I decided to take one of her puppies, Castlewoods Morrigan Le Fay. Morrigan was my first show girl and this would be my first time learning to show a dog and learning how to groom one for the show ring. I took handling classes, went to seminars, found other schnauzer people and paid to learn how to groom for show. My labor of love had begun. We made our fair share of mistakes, but each time we entered the ring, it did not matter if we won the class or not, I made Morrigan think that we had won best in show. She LOVED the ring! Unfortunately, it seemed that competition in Florida, was few and far between. I learned a great deal about showmanship, politics, and geography! Unfortunately we did not earn our championship, she got some points, and a ton of reserves but I had to make a decision, because dog shows are not free. In my travels, a friend and mentor and Standard Breeder, handler and groomer, contacted me and told me about a male in NY that would cross well with Morrigan, and that I should buy him, finish him and breed him to Morrigan. He put me in contact with the breeder, and we drove up to NY and met them at a dog show. When I met Gibbs, it was love at first sight, for both Morrigan and myself! Gibbs was supposed to be my husbands dog, but Gibbs totally took to me. I went on to finish his championship and his grand championship. I had never been more proud! I completed all of their health testing, and when the time was right, bred my first litter. That was the Halloween litter, which was dubbed, the naughty nine. What a great group of puppies! It did not take me long to place all these guys, and I learned a ton. I had purchased a lovely girl by the name of Dream, that I had imported from Croatia. My plan was to add her to my breeding program. As luck would have it however, when I bred my second litter, I found myself going through some new life challenges. Sometimes life throw you a curve ball! I found myself going through an ugly divorce. I had to fight for my dogs, but I got them. Incidentally that was all that I got, and there were terms with that. When the puppies were old enough to travel, I headed back to my roots in NY. At this time, I found out that several puppies from Dreams litter had questionable hip results. I was crushed! But, I had to make the decision this was not something that I wanted to risk adding to my breeding program. Dream was placed in a pet home. Needless to say, I imported one more from Europe and although gorgeous, she did not make size. I learned at that point about ethics and standing behind what you produce.

Morrigan went on to have two more litters. I planned on keeping 2 girls from the third litter, but a veteran very much wanted one of the girls for a therapy dog. Needless to say, I shipped her to Florida and she became a certified therapy dog for this veteran, for which I am most proud! That is better than any grand championship! The last litter, the rock and roll litter, was a true delight. I quickly fell in love with a little girl, that I named, Mustang Sally. She became my pick to keep. Morrigan was spayed, and circumstances stipulated that it would only be right that should a proper home come up I would place Morrigan, and one of the other girls , Sig. With my work schedule, I did not feel it fair to have a bunch of dogs, because in reality, there is only one of me and so much of that can be spread too thin. An angel must have been watching over me, because, I found two wonderful homes for Sig and Morrigan. I will always love Morrigan. She will always be the foundation from where this journey began. She resides in NJ with her pets, John and Peter who adore her. They are her servants. She has been very active in the schnauzer club down there and has been racking up titles at the other end of her name. She will always have a special place in my heart.

Right now, My plans are to start a new journey with Am. Destiny’s Mustang Sally. She is my home bred girl. I still have her dad, Gibbs, and he will make sure that she stays in line! Eventually, should health testing all clear, and Sally can be titled, I will think about doing another litter.
