UPDATE 10/9: The team has staged in Mobile, AL to get closer to Florida before Milton comes ashore. The team is in good spirits and doing final maintenance and training updates.

Washington State Task Force-1 FEMA Urban Search and Rescue has been activated to support efforts related to Hurricane Helene and if additional resources are needed for Hurricane Milton currently in the Gulf of Mexico.

About 30 people from the Type I team left Saturday with two tractor trailers and trucks loaded with 90,000 pounds of equipment. Today, the remainder of the team, about 50 people, are flying to Atlanta. The whole team will convene in Atlanta on Tuesday and be staged for deployment to either Florida or North Carolina.

WA-TF1 includes representatives from Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Seattle Fire Department, South King Fire, Tacoma Fire Department, Valley Regional Fire Authority, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, Bellevue (WA) Fire Department, Puget Sound Fire, Shoreline Fire Department, Renton Regional Fire Authority, Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One, Mercer Island Fire Department, Bothell Fire Department, Redmond WA Fire, Coeur d'Alene Fire Department, Kirkland, WA - Government Fire Department, Eastside Fire & Rescue, Tacoma Public Utilities, Pierce County Planning & Public Works, and Pierce County Department of Emergency Management.

The entire task force is comprised of more than 218 team members, drawn from a variety of organizations. Canine teams accompany WA-TF1 members on all deployments.

We played some Rally Obedience a week ago - it was pouring rain!
Rumo's first time in the ring and he got 1st place! He also q'd and came 2nd his 2nd run.
Cassia's first time in Excellent and she also q'd both time (and got 1st place - but was the only dog in her class ;-) )

My friend Lauren is an amazing trainer! And all the dog's I have met out of Folklore Kennel have been really nice!

Meet Wren who is 16 weeks old today (born February 12, 2024). A confident, outgoing resilient puppy who is available for a working placement. Wren was bred by Holley Reid Murray with Folklore Canine in Alabama and I have been raising her since 8 weeks old.

Wren will excel at Search and Rescue (SAR) or any other detection discipline. Wren has a great genetic foundation. The dam (Folklore's Goddess of the Hunt SH, CGC, TKN, pedigree link in comments) has been a disaster search and rescue K9 and is currently working in wilderness SAR, as well as having her senior hunter title. She has produced 3 litters with almost every puppy going into working or other competitive roles. I raised and trained a puppy from her first litter (2022) who is in an anti-poaching K9 program in Zambia. Wren's sire is FC AFC Which One's Pink (pedigree link in comments).

Wren has been exposed to just about everything you can think of; helicopters, gun fire, livestock, many different surfaces and substrates, started in marker training, toy play development, tracking foundations and more! She is extremely outgoing and confident and both very toy and food motivated. She is being raised in my home with other dogs, is crate trained and house trained. Basically I’ve done most of the hard work for you 😆

Dogs' scenting abilities are amazing!

"Muzzle Awareness" means more than weapons safety. In the past two weeks we've seen dogs with chest injury and difficulty breathing come to us with a tight muzzle in place- that is, a soft "medical" muzzle that keeps the mouth completely closed. These muzzles were actually causing the dogs harm, since it further hindered their already difficult breathing and in one case, also causing the dog's body temperature to approach dangerously high range.

Even the larger, basket-style muzzles can restrict panting that may be critical for taking in additional oxygen or preventing overheating. (See photos for comparison- the dog's tongue cannot hang out as needed for effective panting)

The term "Always muzzle the dog" in canine emergency care guidelines has to be reconsidered to prevent this automatic response that could decrease the dog's chances of survival from critical chest injury.

Also, consider adjustable muzzles like the one pictured at the bottom from This muzzle is fully tightened for safety as needed, then released to allow panting while still providing protection for those working around the dog.

We don't have much time to play in dog sports - but from time to time we enter some trials.

Cassia is 11 now and is slowly getting closer to retirement from being a FEMA USAR K9 so we finally have some time to play in Rally again.
