Following on from my last post...

https://www.connectedcanines.co.uk/blog/understanding-the-differences-between-show-and-working-bred-gundogs

Recently, someone asked me who I’d recommend as a breeder for gundog puppies. While I’m not in a position to give specific recommendations, the question made me reflect on the key differences between working and show-bred gundogs. These differences are important to consider when choosing a puppy, as they can greatly impact not only the dog's abilities but also their suitability for life as a pet.

You will often here me droning on about why I don't like the use of slip leads or aversive equipment and will ALWAYS say that these will not stop your dog pulling and will cause pain, abuse and will probably either make your dog pull even more, lead to reactivity as well as cause your dog to totally disengage with you on walks as they are probably trying to get to be off lead as quickly as possible to get or end the release of the equipment......

However I do explain that slip leads do have their place, and are usually used in types of sports or working your dog, such as gun sports - but are generally only used as a quick release - HOWEVER - these dogs will have been trained prior to this equipment to walk to heel so when they are walked on the slip lead the lead is or should be loose and not tight.
Most reward based trainers who work their dogs may use a slip lead, which generally have a safety device attached to it so it doesn't tighten around the dogs neck and is usually a gap between the neck and the lead.

Dog equipment is often misunderstood about how they are used - of course your dog will pull on the harness or a flat collar but if you are a dog owner who is not ever going to work or compete your dogs, then...

your job as an owner is to help your dog feel comfortable on their walks.

You need to help your dog feel relaxed on their walk!

If your dog is pulling - then you need to ask why??

Is a walk their only bit of fun they get to do all day??
Is it the equipment you are using?
Is the environment too much?
Do they need quieter walks?
Are they worried or scared?

I also often hear 'but they love to sleep, all they do is sleep' ---

so if your dogs only enjoyment is their walk ---

what else can you do to ensure their only fun is not just their walk?

Here are a few easy changes you can add to your dogs daily world...

Enrichment -
1. teatowel with food hidden in a knot inside - this gives your dog an outlet to explore and to use their noses to search and find the treasure. It is mentally stimulating.

2. Find its - ask you dog to wait and hide a toy or piece of kibble. Walk back to your dog and give them the okay to get it, bring toy back and reward with a game.

3. Free searches - hide kibble/treats under blankets, boxes, high places/low places around your home for your dog to explore

4. Scatter feed - throw a handful of kibble in the garden and let your dog search and find.

Play -
1. Tug and stop and repeat (impulse and drive)
2. Arousal game (Impulse and drive)
3. Touch (focus)
4. Spin around items (focus and engagement)
5. Lie down on floor with them and be silly with your dog. Let them jump on you and be goofy (trust and Fun)
6. Chase and hide (trust, engagement, fun)

Doing your research and finding a good breeder doesn't just stop there!

There are many wonderful breeders out there!

but the question before you decide on the breeder is whether you want a Lamborghini or happy with a Ford Escort...(Don't even know if they are still about, but you get my point)

if you have by accident found that you have a Lamborghini.

You will need to learn how to mentally stimulate them
You will need to learn how to settle them in a home.
You will need to learn how to manage their drive and think of things to help them work.

You will need to help them regulate their emotions - they may have strong impulses to do something and you will need to help manage their environments so they learn to feel calm.

Dogs who are often bred to work and come from a good strong line of genetics are usually sensitive souls and may be more overstimulated and responsive to noises, smells, visual stimulus.

When Dogs pull - usually due to learning that pulling gets them to the park or gets the release of something uncomfortable or worried, anxiety, frustration

When Dogs chase - usually because they enjoy it, natural for them to do, frustration/anxiety/fear - trying to get the other dog to play or make them go away or this is the only fun they get to do so it becomes self rewarding such as squirrels

When Dogs dig - usually because they enjoy it, natural for them to do this, frustration - trying to release an emotion (displacement) or becomes self rewarding behaviour

Jumping - because they enjoy it or frustrated, natural for them to do, becomes self rewarding behaviour - person says hello dog gets what they want - attention or they are trying to tell you something - usually please move me away

If you are thinking of getting a new puppy or rescuing a dog, choosing the right dog and breed for you is really important. Get help and advice from a qualified trainer or Behaviourist will help you and support you with this decision.

I first met Arthur when he saved Jade and dragged her to one of my classes to teach her how to be a wonderful human...Arthur rescued Jade when he was only 1, he was scared of the world, people, dogs and mostly everything. Jade has gently guided him and he has grown and shone in the last 15 months 💙💙 but
Unfortunately Jade realised quite quickly that he had a wonky back end, and it's quickly become evident that Arthur had dodgy hips. Jade has spent a lot of time taking Arthur to hydrotherapy and physio as well as regular pain meds in the last year.
The time has come for Arthur to have a new set of hips....I do not usually post things like this, but Arthur has come so far and it would give him his quality of life he deserves...please help Arthur get his hip 💙💙

My name is Arthur. My human rescued me in Aug 2023 from DogFriends when I was 5 mont… Jade Smith needs your support for All I need for Christmas is a new hip!

I am very excited to announce that I have passed my accreditation with PACT and ABTC. 🎉🎉

The dog training industry is not regulated, but you do have a choice!!

Why is it important to choose dog trainers through organisations such as ABTC?

You will have confidence and assurance that dog trainers who are members of these organisations have been fully assessed and accredited and are up to date with their knowledge and learning.

Let's start listening and being the voice for our dogs... be kind, they truly deserve this ❤️🐾🐾

A study led by a canine scientist at Nottingham Trent University looked at the potential impact of pulling on the lead and the related pressure on the neck, using a variety of of collar-types and styles.

🎃 TRICK OR TREAT 🎃

Today is Halloween!

Kanita would NOT be looking like this if she saw a bunch of excited children dressed in costumes on our doorstep this evening!

So, tonight we will be putting a little pot of treats outside of our locked gates- so we don't get unwelcomed visitors across the evening!

Previously at my old house, where I didn't have gates to lock, I would block our path to the house with a wheelie bin. Hardly the most sturdy deterrent- but it worked!

If your dog reacts strongly to the doorbell or is already unsure of children or things that are different/unusual then there is no shame in trying to deter visitors tonight.

👻 You can buffer that scroogey feeling by putting a little pot of treats/biscuits by your door.

👻 Consider taping over your doorbell or taping the door knocker down- incase all of the treats get snapped up or someone overlooks them!

👻It's also sensible to avoid walking your dog on the street in the dark on Halloween if they have a fearful disposition. We should appreciate that these things (little people in costume) have the potential to be very scary for some dogs, and may lead to negative associations and subsequent behaviour problem that can take time to change.

👻If your dog is generally doing well with the doorbell and visitors, then do still apply some caution. Asking your dog to 'stay' on a mat away from the door and even putting a temporary barrier in place may be sensible.

👻 A barrier between your dog and the door is especially sensible for dogs who react more strongly to visitors, just in case your deterrents do not work.

Consider giving your dog a treat scatter (caution in multi dog households or around children) every time the door goes, to help them stay calm.

💥Many serious incidents involving dogs and people take the owner of the dog completely by suprise. Sometimes, there can be warning signals or subtle signs that have gone overlooked, or there are behaviours the dog does that are considered social when they are in fact conflicted or defensive, such as jumping up and/or vocalising.

In some instances- an incident really does appear to come from nowhere and in these cases, the trigger is often stress or health related.

Prevention is better, and far easier, than 'cure'.
