I am very excited to announce that I have passed my accreditation with PACT and ABTC. πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

The dog training industry is not regulated, but you do have a choice!!

Why is it important to choose dog trainers through organisations such as ABTC?

You will have confidence and assurance that dog trainers who are members of these organisations have been fully assessed and accredited and are up to date with their knowledge and learning.

Let's start listening and being the voice for our dogs... be kind, they truly deserve this ❀️🐾🐾

πŸŽƒ TRICK OR TREAT πŸŽƒ

Today is Halloween!

Kanita would NOT be looking like this if she saw a bunch of excited children dressed in costumes on our doorstep this evening!

So, tonight we will be putting a little pot of treats outside of our locked gates- so we don't get unwelcomed visitors across the evening!

Previously at my old house, where I didn't have gates to lock, I would block our path to the house with a wheelie bin. Hardly the most sturdy deterrent- but it worked!

If your dog reacts strongly to the doorbell or is already unsure of children or things that are different/unusual then there is no shame in trying to deter visitors tonight.

πŸ‘» You can buffer that scroogey feeling by putting a little pot of treats/biscuits by your door.

πŸ‘» Consider taping over your doorbell or taping the door knocker down- incase all of the treats get snapped up or someone overlooks them!

πŸ‘»It's also sensible to avoid walking your dog on the street in the dark on Halloween if they have a fearful disposition. We should appreciate that these things (little people in costume) have the potential to be very scary for some dogs, and may lead to negative associations and subsequent behaviour problem that can take time to change.

πŸ‘»If your dog is generally doing well with the doorbell and visitors, then do still apply some caution. Asking your dog to 'stay' on a mat away from the door and even putting a temporary barrier in place may be sensible.

πŸ‘» A barrier between your dog and the door is especially sensible for dogs who react more strongly to visitors, just in case your deterrents do not work.

Consider giving your dog a treat scatter (caution in multi dog households or around children) every time the door goes, to help them stay calm.

πŸ’₯Many serious incidents involving dogs and people take the owner of the dog completely by suprise. Sometimes, there can be warning signals or subtle signs that have gone overlooked, or there are behaviours the dog does that are considered social when they are in fact conflicted or defensive, such as jumping up and/or vocalising.

In some instances- an incident really does appear to come from nowhere and in these cases, the trigger is often stress or health related.

Prevention is better, and far easier, than 'cure'.

Another one of my many reasons why I hate this program so much! It is absolutely shocking that this program is still allowed to be aired... There is never a quick fix to training a dog or changing a dog's emotional response to something. You can not cause fear or scare your dogs to stop doing something.... Start listening and understanding your dogs and most importantly stop watching fake uneducated trainers like this!

My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.

However, I was puzzled. Was the β€œcravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.

I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.

Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!

WTF 😳😳😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.

It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.

I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.

According to his website, he charges Β£875 per session πŸ€”πŸ˜§

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.

However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.

If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.

Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.
