There are people who spread malinformation regarding the safety of UVB lighting. MALOCCLUSION IS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER OF CHINCHILLAS, NOT CATARACTS and UVB lighting MUST BE MOUNTED CORRECTLY to be safe. I've been using it since 2012 and I do not have cataracts. If all of our chinchillas lived to 12, we'd think that was ok- it's 4 more years than in the wild and 6 more years than most of our domestic chins.
Always discuss HOW TO MOUNT UVB LIGHTING SAFELY with your vet and your lamp supplier.
WHY do people do spread malinformation? Pioneering new treatments is always going against the status quo. People are resistant to change and they look for reasons NOT TO SPEND THE MONEY.
I've had a LOT of people badmouthing me over the years, one of the worst people hasn't even had her own chinchilla for approx 16 years. I'm a nutrient therapist, my grandmother had a botany degree and taught me, an A grade biology student, I'm also postgrad psych. I read all the new scientific studies and I will do anything to learn how to prevent malocclusion in my chinchillas.
To the person, Glitch, who is posting malinformation on my page: I haven't banned you, YET. Please read my article on UVB lighting in the NCS Gazette and educate yourself, because only somebody who REALLY loves their chins will go the extra mile to keep them safe and show others that this is preventing malocclusion, along with correct diet.
Guess what? NONE OF MY CHINCHILLAS ARE MALOCCLUDING, NONE OF MY CHINCHILLAS HAVE CATARACTS. By spreading malinformation you may stop somebody from helping their chins to stay free of malo.
Guys- remember- the best knowledge has to be PAID FOR. In these sad days of AI scraping we are going to see, more and more, that those who want to protect their jobs won't be putting stuff up for free on the internet- you have to PAY the NCS for a copy of my article on UVB lighting. You have to PAY for Dr Krissy Green's article on UVB lighting, you have to PAY a good vet for advice on UVB lighting.
Let's not forget what's going on right now.
Kthx.
P.S. I have never heard of a chinchilla getting cataracts from UVB lighting, I have heard some breeders say they thought it gave their chin an eye infection but malo is the primary cause of eye infections- it's possible they didn't get the lights in time and the lights becamse the scapegoat. I have seen ZERO scientific studies on lamps causing cataracts. We've been safely using UVB for parrots and reptiles for a VERY long time- just be SENSIBLE- get your info on how to use them safely!!!
