Volunteer Profile for the Month Liz

I started volunteering at the WLPA in February 2023 after seeing on Facebook that they needed volunteers. I had been thinking of doing some kind of volunteering for a while but didn’t know what to do and, as a cat lover, when I saw that they needed help at the WLPA, I jumped at the chance and emailed them to offer my services. I work full time during the week so I volunteer one Saturday per fortnight and I love it!

I usually get there at about 9am and I am greeted by lots of eager faces waiting to be fed. I start by feeding the cats, and if I’m not quick enough they like to tell me that I need to hurry up. I then change their water and top up their dry food and collect any empty food dishes which have to be soaked before washing them. It’s then onto cleaning out their litter trays (not a favourite task of mine but it doesn’t take long to complete and I reward myself with a cuddle of a kitten or two.) I then straighten all their bedding and sweep and mop the floors and then it’s time for morning tea. This gives the volunteers an opportunity to sit and chat and catch up on what they’ve been up to.

Then it’s back to work washing dishes, cleaning the cat rooms and individual cages. There’s always an opportunity to spend time with the cats, you get to know their quirky personalities and it’s not too long before you have a couple of favourites.

Usually my volunteer shifts takes maximum 3 hours and it’s such a way for me to start my weekend.

Sausage Sizzle & Soul mates Await

At Randwick PetO on Saturday 23rd 10am – after 1pm

Come and meet the cutest kittens and if possible give one or two, a home and family of their own. Catch up with WLPA volunteers and find out more about No Kill rescue and rehoming work.

We are bringing five kittens under 10 weeks of age and one older girl, plus three magnificent cats. Including Simon who used up one of his nine lives, when his previous family wanted to kill him, as it was cheaper than treating the abscess he had endured for many weeks. He has just turned one year old.

Peto is at 115 Avoca St in the heart of Randwick. If there are any locals who would be able to help with the sausage sizzle for a couple of hours at lunchtime that would be marvelous, please call or email WLPA.

Contact details for WLPA are Tel 9817 4892 and Email [email protected]

MASSIVE thank you to Kathy, Karen, Debra, Laura, Annabel, Leone and Anita who volunteered over the weekend on our Garage Trail stall and all who contributed goods for it.

We had some lovely members of the public come out to support us some of them paying over the odds for the goods they bought. We also recruited a few volunteers and hopefully the publicity will result in some more adoptions.

Thanks to all who helped in any way

Worst Tick Season Experienced by Sydney north shore vet

The Australian paralysis tick (or ixodes holocyclus), is unfortunately common along the eastern seaboard of Australia at this time of year. Do not let your cat or any mammal become the next victim. Just one tick can kill a cat.

Prevention is improved by :
• Using propriety spot on treatments specifically for your species of animal. Some dog treatments are toxic to cats.
• Keeping your cats inside
• Checking your cloths etc especially if you have been in long grass for ticks

Signs of tick bites include :
• A tick attached to the skin of the animal
• Itchiness and local inflammation at the site of the bite
• Leg weakness
• Dilated pupils
• Problems swallowing and breathing
• Vomiting

If you suspect a tick bite contact your vet straight away, as delays in getting treatment and the anti venom to the neurotoxin secreted by the tick into your cat, can be fatal

Regularly check for ticks which when not engorged with blood can be quite small and hard to see in fur so run your fingers through every part of the body.

The above is WLPA information relayed to try and protect animals, not vet advice

Vale Greg Turner

All at the World League for Protection of Animals were very sad to hear of Greg Turner’s passing. He was an amazing champion for the cats, in his role as journalist for The Weekly Times. This was officially recognised by WLPA a couple of years ago when he was given the compassion award, for all his efforts.

Not only did Greg change many cat’s lives, by helping them to obtain loving homes but also many of the readers who adopted cats, have let us know how much joy and meaning these family additions have brought them.

I am glad that the cats were of a comfort to Greg in these difficult years of ill health. He told me receiving the cat of the week post and photos always brought a smile to his face and joy to his day. He also enjoyed it immensely when readers told him how much they value of the Cat of the Week column. Once accompanying John Booth to the Twilight Nursing Home, where John asked the residents to nominate their favourite part of the newspaper, not only did they tell him it was Cat of the Week, they promptly produced a scrapbook of cuttings to show him the previous articles.

WLPA are really pleased that that TWT Acting Editor Anthony Stavrinos, will take over the running of the Cat of the Week column and by so doing will continue Greg’s great work for animals in this area.

As a small token of our esteem for Greg, the next two boys to arrive at our service will be called Greg and Turner.
