This is something that every trainer thinks about, but very few talk about.

We’ve hit this era in dog training where expectations are sky high, and value of work done by owners is so low.

Everyone wants the pretty obedience dog, but no one is willing to put in the continued work anymore. Training daily. Rewarding perfection. Correcting the unwanted.

Guys, this isn’t an industry secret - your dog trainer can NOT care more than you do about your success.

Our job and goal is to show you how to improve, and give you the tools for success.

If you do a board and train, and can’t follow the directions to continue with take home lessons that are provided - you’ve failed your dog. That’s on you.

If you do private lessons, but choose to not do the homework. You guessed it, you failed your dog. That’s on you.

Dog training isn’t complicated. It can be done with a shoelace, treats, and a little dedicated time. I never want to hear that you don’t have time - because we’ve got 24 hours in a day. Watch 30 minutes less of TV. Wake up 15 minutes earlier. Trade couch time, for a quick obedience session.

There’s always an excuse. It’s how you overcome that excuse, and how you make this lifestyle a habit. Just like everything else in life!

I love getting updates from my clients. Good, bad, or indifferent. But if you can’t follow the generally simple instructions of keeping us updated, or setting up sessions as we’ve instructed you to do so, you’ve chosen your path. Every dog trainer is in this boat.

It’s time to do better. That’s the commitment we’ve made with our dogs the moment we brought them into our home. I care about all of my clients, and I’ve been truly blessed with amazing people who want to better their dogs, but even I’m noticing less follow through.

Work with us so we can help you. That’s what we are here for. But we can’t help you, if you don’t help yourself by following through.

If you set high expectations for your trainer and your dog, then you need to set that same level of expectation of yourself or you will fail your dog and yourself. Don’t blame your dog or your trainer because your dog does what he learned during training, when he is with the trainer because the trainer holds the dog accountable for what he learned and holds themselves accountable to not fail the dog. So we know it’s not the dog failing, it is you. Do better, do your part and hold your self accountable.

Yes!!!!

The smaller your dog's world is the more dysfunction will present itself. The smallest stimulus will be overwhelming, and bad habits and neurosis will arise out of boredom or frustration. The larger your dog's world is the more normal your dog will be, the more overwhelming static will just become background noise. The trick, the rub, is to give your dog enough manners and "civilization" so you can take it out into the world, into your world, and control it for it's sake and the rest of the world's sake. That's when the true healing and growth begins.

Tired.
Your puppy is tired.
The most common call I get for puppies is that the puppy gets out of control at times, and is biting the owners. I used to laugh and think "how could a tiny puppy be such a tyrant?". But then I saw it, time and again. It's not hard to fix. Typically ignoring the puppy won't stop it, squealing OW won't stop it, holding the dog's mouth shut won't stop it, and for sure the stupid alpha roll won't stop it.
You let the puppy get far, far too tired and didn't put it up, then it gets all wound up. Puppies need 20+ hours of sleep a day. Get your puppy out of the crate or exercise pen, potty it, feed it if needed, and play with it for a bit. Then put it back in the crate. If the puppy falls asleep within 5 minutes it was tired. Let puppy sleep an hour or two then get it out again and repeat the cycle. Puppies shouldn't be left out to get all worked up, and practice pottying in out of the way places, and shred your possessions. Put the puppy up. A lot of the nipping will just go away as the puppy matures. If you're in Dallas Fort Worth area and you need a plan and help with your new puppy contact me.

Me and dogs

Dogs have always been a part of my life. The first dog I remember having was Poochie, a male beagle mix. I was three and Poochie went everywhere with me and did everything I asked, he was my best friend. In my mind, he was the first dog I ever trained, unofficially. The first documented training was when I was 20 and I trained my Chow Chow, Sabby. I went on to train three other Chow Chows (Sadie, Bridgette, and Tika), who I owned and one adorable beagle named Benny.

Fast forward to February 2016, I had been without a dog for a year and a half because Benny the beagle died in July 2014 and my heart and soul were broken. I adopted Remi, a male American Staffordshire Terrier from a local shelter and he was the easiest dog I ever trained, he just did what I said with little effort from me. I thought to myself if they are all like this, I’ll never get any other breed of dog. Well, I was WRONG.

August 2016 a very good friend asked me to help network a red female pit bull puppy, who she found dumped on the side of a very busy highway. So I did, I networked her right into my home. Jazzy joins the family. I thought this will be a breeze, Remi will be the perfect role model for her and teach her all his good habits. I was WRONG again! Jazzy came into the family a sweet little puppy, who followed Remi around until she got to my house. She turned into a Velociraptor with glazed over eyes, dilated pupils and a mouth full of teeth. I was there just to provide food while she ruled the house. She chewed wood stairs, baseboards, window sills and 75 feet of cedar fence, ignored my commands and gave me stink eye but the worst part was she taught Remi all her bad habits. I tried for over a year to get her trained and Remi back in shape but she wasn’t having it. In late 2017, I broke down and hired a wonderful trainer, who not only trained my dogs but trained me and because of the results, I decided to officially train to be a dog trainer and I’m loving every second of it!
