We can not just sit and see posts for dogs who need homes and are in kill shelters (because for some God forsaken reason those are still allowed to exist) and not say something.

Please see this page and find others like them. Even if you don't have the room or time to adopt or foster, you may know someone who would be a perfect fit. A simple share could save a life!!!

If we could take them all and find them homes locally, we would, but we are simply not set up for it.

Yes, they are our favorite little fur babies. However, this needs to be remembered, they are also animals and they have very different needs from us.

Do not disregard their needs for the idea of the perfectly clean and stoic family dog/cat/bird/etc. That is not how animals work.

Fluffy dogs need cooler air.
Short haired dogs sometimes need less sun.
Birds need bird time and toys. So many toys and all the stimulus.
Cats need things to scratch and chew on.
Rodents, many times, need things to burrow into & around and things to steal. It's what they do.
Dogs need to run, chase, chew.
All of them NEED to have their personal space respected as well.

I truly believe that if Steve Irwin were alive today, he would have a dedicated group of people who hated him for how he treated animals.

Steve always treated every species he worked with, as the species they were, not forcing them to change their nature.

More and more I find myself trying to convince people to "let the dog go outside, it's okay if they get a little dirty" or "your snake is arboreal and can't just be confined to a small tub." Or "Your working breed dog is not happy being still and lazy in your one bedroom apartment with nothing to keep them active and thinking."

It seems in this next generation of animal husbandry, we're deciding that all animals are now going to become (and be treated as) our little babies.

Now, is it okay to refer to your furry, feathered, scaly friend as such? Of course!
Is it okay to treat them as human babies...absolutely not at all.

As we see this change taking place, so to do we see more and more stressed out animals. Ones with a lack of structure and mental enrichment...but tons and tons of random toys and bags of treats.

What Steve Irwin did is create an environment that was enriching for the animals he had. Not attempt to force the animals to adjust to his environment.

Taking your Border Collie or herding, working, hunting, breed on a 10 minute walk (as long as you remember, it's not raining or just not feeling upto it) once a day, is not cutting it.

Locking your pyrenees or Shepherd breed in a kennel all day and then keeping'em in a small apartment, but still expecting the dog to be still and always cuddling...not cutting it.

Keeping your African grey parrot in a small enclosure with a few items that you've not replaced...is not cutting it.

When you bring an animal into your life. It is so important to understand what that animal is and have a structured enrichment routine and appropriate setup for the breed/species before you take in the animal.

Anything less than what your animal needs is a disservice to your best friend.

Be kind to your animals, enrich their lives (in a way that's appropriate for them). Keep them thinking. Keep them exploring. Give them understanding and structure and you will keep them happy.

We apologize for our delay in making this announcement...

Due to the air quality issue we are currently experiencing, along with the continued heat, it would be extremely unhealthy for your pets and our employees to be out for extended* periods.
It looks like we can expect a rainy reprieve late Tuesday night and through Wednesday.
However, until then, we can not ask our employees to take this risk to their health. Nor can we ask that they subject your pets' health to these dangerous conditions.

Please contact our office if you need to work out something other than an extended* walk.

*Anything past ten minutes would be considered "extended" in this type of situation.
**No these photos are not of torture devices on dogs. They are filtered masks for dogs (extremely helpful with our current/yearly air quality issue).

This week's Q&A:
Q: "How do you handle walking dogs in the heat?"

A: It depends on the time of day, temperature and walking area.

Some dogs we can get to a park with trees and keep cool. Some dogs we have to be a little more creative with, like a run in the yard and some catch inside the house.

If we are forced to take them out in high temperatures (restricted or no yard space), we carry extra waters, nose and paw butter and keep a keen eye on their behavior and movements. We attempt to find as much shade and non-paved areas as possible and take a great many breaks for them.

If temperatures are too high and a walker knows there is no safe way to get your dog out for more than a quick potty, we will contact you and discuss an alternate form of check-in/potty break.

Stay safe out there!

It's this time of year again...
So many people, out with their dogs. Let's clear something up, Your dog being friendly doesn't mean your dog is safe from other dogs.

Your dog being friendly and free to do as they please, means your dog scaring other dogs and making them feel a need to defend themselves.
It means me standing between your dog and my client so no one gets hurt.
It means I may be forced to punt your dog for it's own safety from my client or for my clients safety, because God forbid any dog ever change it's demeanor after leaving its owner's side... that never happens... oh wait, it happens all the time. That friendly dog, changed its mind and now I am at risk with a terrified mastiff trying to defend itself from a pour mannered Frenchie with small dog syndrome. Gee thanks.

If someone came up to you and got in your face or touched you, you'd have the right to tell them off/step away/push them off of you... my clients (dogs) and my employees have the same rights.

We mostly work with animals who have special needs. Those needs almost always include, your dog staying away. This isn't just for your safety. This is for our safety, your safety, the kids' safety, the pets safety, your pets safety, etc.

Ask and/or Stay away. Have respect for the things and beings around you.
