How we became farmers in our 60s is a long story that I wont bore you with now, but we live in the city limits of Milwaukee, have 5 acres, 2 ½ of which we farm, 150 chickens and a cat named Peanuts. He’s a Maine C**n cat and came with that name at the age of 6. We also raised two pigs and 6 turkeys, all of which were delicious. This year we sold 24 CSA shares (Community Supported Agriculture). As
you know there were some weather issues - the record heat, lack of rain and early frost were challenging and growing produce without herbicides, pesticides or any other chemical means more weeding and bug control. There are always vegetables we wish we had more of, but given the circumstances we were pleased. We are very excited about next year. We are already planning ways to improve our production. We have planted 1500 garlic heads, and have been getting the soil amended with compost and manure to be ready to go in the early spring. Our new 72' x 30' hoop house will allow is to have earlier produce, especially tomatoes. Already, I have been buying seeds like crazy with plans for exciting new varieties. (if there is anything you would like us to grow, please let us know). Marty and I hope that you will be part of our 2013 CSA. The cost of the share is $600 for the summer. (weather permitting we expect 20 baskets) If you would like to reserve a spot, please let us know by emailing me at [email protected] Checks are due February 1. We wish you a wonderful holiday.
