“I was born in Chile, grew up in Canada and married a career Air Force guy that landed me in Chicago.

I am a mother of three grown children and currently serve as the volunteer foster coordinator at Mercer Animal Rescue.
My journey into rescue fostering began when my youngest daughter was starting kindergarten, and we planned to get her a puppy for her birthday. While searching, I found a litter of puppies needing homes, adopted one ourselves, and placed the others with loving families. That experience sparked my passion for animal rescue.

Over the years, I’ve fostered countless dogs and puppies, including abandoned litters and breeder surrenders. I’ve transported dogs as far as Red Deer, Alberta, and the Northeast to ensure they find loving homes. I’ve also cared for mother dogs and their newborn puppies, providing the attention they need to thrive.

My work in rescue is driven by a deep desire to give every animal a chance at a better life. Mercer Animal Rescue embodies everything I believe in—compassion, dedication, and saving lives. In my role as foster coordinator, I support fosters and ensure dogs are placed in the right homes to set them up for success.

I am proud to be part of a mission that transforms the lives of animals and brings joy to their adopters.”

Some of you know that we recently began adopting dogs to the northeast again. After a hiatus of 6 years. Hooray.
We are so excited about this. We used to have the most fun adoption events in Connecticut. You may remember. What was so great is we were able to meet the adopters. 💙🐶🩵

We are excited for the dogs and we are doubly excited to have Trish Vasseur helping to co-ordinate our northeast effort. She’s smart & nice & LOVES animals.
We are planning to visit Rhode Island with dogs in February. If you don’t live too far and would like to help by fostering or volunteering, reach out to Trish. Her email is at the bottom of the post.

“I grew up in New York, attended college at Cornell University, and have lived up and down the East Coast. Growing up, my parents had a rescue dog, Ginger, who lived for 17 years. I loved having dogs in my world. Whenever possible, I have continued to have dogs in my life in many different ways.

I have one child, Rick, who got married in July, and when he was young, I was a stay-at-home Mom who ran a dog walking business for several years named after my golden retriever at the time, “Kellie’s Friends.”

As time passed, I’ve had careers in banking, law and real estate and have owned several dogs. Most recently, I have a dog boarding/walking business via Rover.com, where I have achieved “Star Sitter” status, with all 5-star reviews. It gave me an opportunity to get to know various rescue furbabies of all kinds. I came to realize I wanted to help more rescues find their forever homes and life happy lives. Dogs offer such unconditional love, and just want to be loved and feel safe in return.

A few weeks ago, I connected with Mercer Animal Rescue and, with Beverly’s fantastic help, adopted a golden/great pyrenees mix of 9 months of age. I’ve named him Murphy and he has filled my life already with unconditional love, happiness and laughter at his goofiness! Rescues need all of our help to find their true place in this world, and I look forward to helping Mercer Animal Rescue place rescues in the Northeast, as I reside now in Bristol, Rhode Island.”

As a rescue, we rely on the generosity of our community to provide the best care for our furry friends.

The total cost for Firestone’s treatment is approximately $1800. Every little bit helps, and no donation is too small!

Firestone is still at the clinic being treated but we are hoping he will be released very soon. And feeling much better.

Firestone was rescued & saved from euthanasia at Memphis Animal Services last week.

Daphne (aka Dana) had a great two weeks in Chicago !

Huge thank you to her foster parents!! 🐶

Sadly, she did not find her forever home but is now ready to head to the northeast.

She’s a great dog. Smart. Sweet happy. Beautiful!!

Buh - bye Memphis 👋

When Oso first came to the rescue, he was so unsocialized that he spent the entire first week hiding under my bed. It broke my heart to see him so scared and unsure. But little by little, with patience and love, he started to come out of his shell!

Now for the best part, Oso is living in his adoptive home, and he is beginning to explore the world around him.

Oso - has his mom, dad and furry brother Hammie to show him how to be a brave boy.

It just goes to show that with a little time, understanding, and a lot of love, even the shyest souls can find their place in the heart of a home. 🩵

••••• Oso came from the Memphis shelter and was surrendered by his owner because they had too many dogs. Ugh.
