Just as we’re waking up:
Phoebe “I have sumfin in my mouth”
Me “you do?!”
Phoebe “NO! I DON’T eat baby kittens!!”
🫣 Didn’t say you did…

I’m enjoying making some different things now that farmer’s markets are done for the year 😋

Not to count my tomatoes before that ripen or anything, but this is the first tomato I’ve grown in Texas, and we’re all waiting with bated breath.
By “we all” I mean Elijah and me, and honestly he’s only invested because he wants to eat it. He doesn’t understand that I’ve been trying to grow tomatoes down here for longer than he’s been alive, but I appreciate his enthusiasm anyway. 💚

I am finally figuring why, despite the great value I place on and fulfillment I get in taking care of our house, I would ALWAYS rather be working outside.
It’s because in nature entropy is working for you, and inside entropy is working against you.
Things want to grow, the ground wants to be covered, when stuff is pruned back it flourishes, it is all naturally bent towards beautiful growth. The more I keep the tumbleweeds mowed down, the less I’m going to have to fight the tumbleweeds in the future, because the whole ecosystem is getting healthier. Entropy is life and life is helping you, you’re job is just to nudge it this way and that.
The house can get very systemized and manageable but will never reach the point of a hands off food forest. As long as there are people eating there are dirty dishes. There will never be a point where you’ve dusted so much that dust stops collecting. And on days like yesterday, when Entropy 1 pours piles of salt on the floor while Entropy 2 scoops it up in his hands and holds it in front of the air conditioner to scatter the granules, and then both Entropies take their diaper and underwear off and throw them at the ceiling fan, the mess grows much faster than rain can grow the mess outside.
Hear me, there is value and honor and glory in the mundane and repetitive. It’s just that I finally figured out why mowing is such a relaxing break. 😂

Today is my seventh day without coffee. Turns out what I thought was the indwelling of the Holy Spirit giving me graciousness and power was just the caffeine and I have a lot more praying to do. That’s laundry on the line during a rainstorm there in the pic. The second night I put the kids to bed but forgot to turn out their light. I put salt in my yogurt twice one day. But we’re all still alive and I think I’m starting to wake up!

This year we put in a peach a pear and three blackberry baby bushes (thanks !). The trees are thriiiiving, and I attribute it largely to putting them in the backyard where they’re right in front of my face and I have no excuse for not watering them. Finally getting something perennial in the ground feels gooooood. 🥰

Idk if ya’ll remember but about six years ago I was praying for wood chips- or some way ANY way to mulch and get organic matter into this dry sandy soil- and was hitting nothing but dead ends. Then there were tree cutters at our neighbors house, Tim went and talked to them, and they started dumping their trucks at our house. I think we got like eleven loads! 🙌🏼 We put a lot on the garden but most of it has just been doing its decomposing work. Now they’re down to like 1/5 their height and I’m getting ready to actually grow in them this year. Plan is to do the big stuff like okra, melons and squash, and maybe sweet potatoes out here, but I have to fence in where I’m going to plant because either hogs or coyotes are digging in them. They’ve made beautiful compost, while I felt like I wasn’t getting anything done all the little microbes were slowly making progress, and if this works it’ll more than double our garden space. I’m excited!

Cows are the neighbor’s, they think we’re their personal reality show.

We made a thunder cake, school is so fun ❤️ According to Elijah they didn’t get dirty, they got “cakey” lol.
Right now “school” consists of reading from the Jesus Storybook Bible and going over a Bible verse and a day of creation (depending on the day of the week) with cards from , doing lots of numbers and letters scattered throughout the day, and reading books off the “Around the Year in Picture Books” list from - our library doesn’t have them all but it’s a huge list, we get to read plenty. Elijah is very VERY into school time, he says it is HIS school not mine. Phoebe is very into when we get the chalk or markers out and she gets to scribble, otherwise, as she carefully informs me, she is happy being a cat.

The kids have been sleeping in the living room for the last year and a half while Mom was in the second bedroom. Finally getting them moved over now that she’s in her tiny house/camper, after a fresh coat of paint and a scrub down 🥳

Planners and breakfast meeting with my colleagues ❤️
We call their little $1 notebooks planners cause when Mommy has a planner, or says she’s writing a list, they want to write a list. They also want to make the check mark on the chore list on the fridge.
They also *must* put things where they go if they’ve decided things go somewhere (sometimes where they go is on the floor but sometimes Elijah goes running off to put a toy in the randoms bin in the other room instead of the randoms bin in this room cause it’s always been in THAT room and THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.)
Elijah also must wipe all the water off the sink when he washes his hands.
And they must brush their teeth, a curse upon me if I try to skip brushing teeth.
I just feel like toddlers are a little less chaotic than they get credit for 😂

Phoebe during “outside nature explore build immune system and get dirty and tired” time when she was refusing to walk through the taller (but safe and checked for snakes) grass, doing sign language for “dirty” and saying “sdeesdee”. She preferred to stay by the stroller and drink my coffee.
Much like the last pool party we were at, when she preferred sitting in the deck chair eating snacks to getting in the water.
Tim’s words- “she’s such a girl. Gets that from me.” ☠️

“‘ There is much done every day in Dohnavur that no caste person would do for pay, however much was offered,” wrote Amy [Carmichael], who mentioned to one of her trainees that she had no doubt cut thousands of small toe-and fingernails— ‘I who said I would never do any work but ‘preach the gospel.’ It takes some of us years or learn what preaching the gospel means.’” — “A Chance to Die”

My sidekick and I celebrated the accomplishment of baking and selling sourdough at the farmer’s market for the past five weeks with French fries and a cherry limeade ❤️ We may possibly come back after Tabernacles but probably are done till next year. Elijah has come with me every time while Phoebe stayed with Dodo, and he’s been a trooper, especially after he got over being upset that people were taking “his” food. 😂

There were probably people three miles in Knox City wondering who was screaming for a full minute. I didn’t see it and reached down into the feed can and it jumped at my face. If anyone needs me I’ll be wrapped up in a blanket with coffee trying to restore trust in the outside world.
It’s the cutest rat I’ve ever seen tho.

Phoebe and I are going through that eighteen month sleep regression. It is…a sanctifying season.
Part of what she does every night to delay going to sleep is stand in her crib and scream for Yaya (Elijah).
I took just Elijah to the farmers market the other day and he spent a good chunk of the time asking where Phoebe was.
It’s just the cutest. That’s all.

Phoebe’s not really riding her balance bike yet, she can barely reach, but she looooooves being pushed around and it’s so fun to see her study what brother is doing and practice the feet motions.
I’m looking forward to both of them zooming around, which I bet will be soon. I definitely think Phoebe will learn the balance bike before Elijah is interested in a pedal bike. I’m wondering, if they’re riding bikes can we get through chores faster than walking? 😝
Phoebe is just a couple weeks from being the age Elijah was when she was born. I know a 17 month age gap is like below the “social unacceptable to do on purpose but if it happens on accident we’ll call it a blessing” line, and sure the first year was busy. But gosh, it was just one year and the older they get the more and more fun this is. They’re such buddies and I love it so much. 💚💜

It’s raining in Texas! And below 75 degrees! And we had dew this morning! And it’s supposed to keep going!
This picture is from a few weeks ago when we watched several small storms meandering around the country giving moisture to a very small path.
Yesterday morning the kids and I took breakfast up to see Tim again, and it rained for most of the time we were riding in the feed truck. It was cozy. Phoebe fell asleep. Elijah looked for a hippopotamus among the cows. Glorious ❤️

Elijah and I read Blueberries for Sal yesterday and I thought he’d be into the bears but he was most focused on the two pages that had a tiny picture of a car 😂

104 degrees is too dang hot to bring the kids up to ride in the feed truck with Tim, so today we got up early, packed breakfast, and came up while it was still cool.
If you think they were very focused on eating that breakfast while watching Dad finish batching, no they were not.
But they’ve had so much fun and it’s been a lovely morning ❤️
