I am finally figuring why, despite the great value I place on and fulfillment I get in taking care of our house, I would ALWAYS rather be working outside.
It’s because in nature entropy is working for you, and inside entropy is working against you.
Things want to grow, the ground wants to be covered, when stuff is pruned back it flourishes, it is all naturally bent towards beautiful growth. The more I keep the tumbleweeds mowed down, the less I’m going to have to fight the tumbleweeds in the future, because the whole ecosystem is getting healthier. Entropy is life and life is helping you, you’re job is just to nudge it this way and that.
The house can get very systemized and manageable but will never reach the point of a hands off food forest. As long as there are people eating there are dirty dishes. There will never be a point where you’ve dusted so much that dust stops collecting. And on days like yesterday, when Entropy 1 pours piles of salt on the floor while Entropy 2 scoops it up in his hands and holds it in front of the air conditioner to scatter the granules, and then both Entropies take their diaper and underwear off and throw them at the ceiling fan, the mess grows much faster than rain can grow the mess outside.
Hear me, there is value and honor and glory in the mundane and repetitive. It’s just that I finally figured out why mowing is such a relaxing break. 😂
