🐾✨ Meet the Place Command – my absolute favorite game changer for both puppies and adult dogs!

Every dog should know this incredible command that serves as the closest thing to magic! 🪄

Why is it so amazing, you ask?

It gives our furry friends an OFF switch! 🛑

Helps teach them how to be calm when we need them to be calm for example when someone is walking through the door, they are overly excited, etc.

The Place Command is when we ask our dogs to sit or lay down on a designated spot until we release them. In the photo here you can see this dog is laying on a cot.

It’s the BEST management tool!! 🙌🙌

Use it for keeping them out of your food, away from kids’ toys, keeping them calm when you need them to stay calm, and more.

Ready to trim your dogs nails like a pro?

Swipe for a guide to stress-free nail trims! Embark on this grooming journey with your pup, ensuring a positive experience from the start.

Step 1: Positioning and Rewarding 🐶

Begin with handling and rewarding ONLY. Build trust, making sure your dog is comfortable before introducing clippers. Take it slow!

Step 2: Clippers Introduction ✂️

Introduce clippers without cutting. Make it a positive experience. Show them, let them sniff, and make sure to reward. Positive associations are key. Gradually build comfort with the sight and sound of clippers.

Step 3: Tapping and Clipping 💅

Begin tapping and occasional clipping. Show nail trimming is easy, relaxing, and rewarding. Practice daily—1 to 2 nails at a time. Keep them comfortable and guessing, moving to back paws.

Step 4: Trimming Those Nails 👏

Week 4: Cut the whole paw, no tapping needed. Progress at your pup’s pace—some may need more time. As you go, it gets easier. Trim nails weekly for a well-maintained length and a happy grooming routine!

Remember, every pup is unique, so adjust the pace to their comfort levels. 🐾

Calling All Parents!

We are hosting a free workshop for kids to learn more about safely interacting with dogs, whether they have dogs at home or not!

Kids will get to learn basic body language, learn how to politely and safely interact with dogs, and how to greet dogs they don’t know.

The workshop will take place at TORQ Physical Therapy at the corner of Broad Street & Main Street in Riverton.

🐾 Crate Training 101: Making it a Pawsitive Experience! 🐾

Introducing your pup to the crate is a gradual, rewarding process!

🏠 Follow these steps:

1️⃣ Toss kibble in the crate, mark reward. Add gentle leash pressure if needed 🎉

2️⃣Gradually reduce leash pressure, marking and rewarding their cooperation. 🐕

3️⃣Introduce the command while they enter, making the association. 🗣️

4️⃣Progress to closing the crate, opening when settled. 🚪

5️⃣Lock the crate briefly, unlocking when they're calm and content. 🔐

6️⃣Gradually increase distance, marking and rewarding their positive behavior. 🏃‍♂️🍖

Remember, make it fun – they're working for tasty rewards! 🌟

Lots of people are guilty of this! 🦴

Here's a little secret – when we constantly ask our dogs if they want a treat, our dogs bolt towards us like they’re about to get the reward they’ve been waiting all day for! But why don’t they do that when we say “come”?!

Because we’re inconsistent with our rewards and what follows the command! 🐾

So, why not keep it simple? Start with a clear and confident 'come,' followed by a rewarding treat! By consistently rewarding this command, your dog will learn to respond reliably, and we can phase out the food down the road 🐶

This is one of the most underrated parts of training…

PLAY!! 🎾🦴🐶

Play is a huge part of our training program.

One big benefit of course is that it teach dogs how to politely play with other dogs and humans! What a better place to practice this than in a safe, training environment.

But not only that, these guys need to let loose, enjoy life, build a relationship with us, and just HAVE FUN!

We end almost every training sesh with playtime, followed by a nap. This is a reward for the dog’s hard work, but also lets them know we’re not all business!

Your dog can enjoy himself and learn a ton at the same time! And it will lead to a more well rounded pup in the long run.

If you’re not incorporating play into your training routine, DO IT! You might get better, easier, faster results. All work and no play makes training dull, for everyone!

Have you ever wondered when to take potty breaks if you’re walking in a “heel” position? Keep reading!!

If you’ve done the work and invested in your dogs’ training, you should always be walking in a structured heel position (if you’re not there yet, check out my other content and my puppy course for some walk basics!)

So many people wonder, “If my dog is walking next to me without pulling on the leash, how will I know when they need to stop and go to the bathroom?”

Well, it’s simple!

Start to notice signs your dog gives you that they’re ready for their potty break.

Bring them over to a safe patch of grass (and not right next to your neighbors house), loosen the slack on the leash, and encourage them to “go potty”.

Make sure that during this you’re standing still during this so your dog knows this is business time, not walking time.

Afterwards, have your dog sit still while you clean up and them reassume the heel position!

The more you practice walking with your dog in heel, the more you’ll be able to tell when they’re ready to stop for a potty.

Make sure you save this post as a reminder for the next time you’re out on a walk!

What’s the best thing you can do when you see an adorable dog in public?

When you’re out for a walk, you’ll inevitably run into some pawsitively adorable pups, but what’s the best way to interact with them?

I know it can be tempting to go up to every dog, give them hugs and kisses, but not every dog or owner would want this.

You may run into dogs that have anxiety, are new to socializing, or are nervous around new people or dogs.

So if you’d like to pet someone’s dog…

❌Don’t shout in a loud, over excited voice

❌Don’t pet the dog without asking

❌Don’t invade the space of the dog or owner without consent

But remember you can always ask to say hi! If they say no, just respect that and trust that it’s in the best interest of the pup to not engage with them.

Instead, you can…

✅Compliment the owner on how beautiful their dog is

✅Or even better, compliment them on how well behaved they are!

One positive interaction could change the dog’s and the owner’s whole day!

If you’re a new puppy owner, you’re going to want to read this!

One of the most important parts of puppy training is socialization. But this is also a place where many dog owners get it wrong.

Socialization is not only fun for your pup, but it helps them learn important behaviors.

To start socializing your pup, start EXPOSING them - to new sights, smells, sounds, and environments.

Before doing this, it’s important to know what socializing is and isn’t.

❌ Socializing isn’t asking every person you meet to say hi to your puppy, greeting every dog you meet, going to dog parks, taking your pup everywhere you go, or being pushed into uncomfortable situations.

✅ Socializing is introducing your pup to people who support your training, exposing them to people you trust, playing in yards and safe places, going on errands with you, driving in the car, and slowly introducing them to new sounds and places.

Socializing is all about exposing your pup to new things, AND helping them learn to ignore these new stimuli. You want your dog to stay focused on you and not all the things going on around you.

Make sure to reward your pup in all these new scenarios when they stay focused on you and are able to let things go!

And as always, remember to have fun! This is such a joyful part of training and having a new puppy, so enjoy it!

Whether you’ve tried it before or you’ve always been curious about it, it doesn’t have to be intimidating!

Introducing the e-collar is just like introducing any other new skill to your dog - it takes a little time, some patience, and of course yummy treats! 🦴

And the e-collar can be an excellent tool for any dog in need of serious guidance or one that would benefit from a little off leash work (which is most dogs!)

Remember, this is not a tool to intimidate or scare our dogs, it’s used to motivate and engage!

Maezie and I took a Home Depot field trip today! I was in need of fly traps (fruit flies..EW) and she could use a field trip, so off we went!! Maezie did really well, although definitely keeping ears and eyes on her surroundings. Towards the end she relaxed a bit, but overall she did a really good job! You’re on your way, Maezie girl! Meredith's owner asked how she is doing with brushing during her stay here, so I decided to show instead of tell! This is her first time up on my "grooming bench" outside, previously we had just done brushing on place. But since it was so nice out, and OMG all that hair, we gave it a whirl.
