Hedgehog Care Sheet
This hedgehog care sheet is the basic and vital information you should be concerned with before taking a hedgehog home to care for. For a more detailed hedgehog care sheet, please go to https://heavenlyhedgies.com/fb-hedgehog-care-sheet. Also, for a list of non-toxic products to replace polyester fleece and PVC tubes go to https://heavenlyhedgies.com/hedgehog-safe-resources/
Hedgehog Habitat: Hedgehogs should live in a large cage preferably with a lid and plastic base or small enough bars so your hedgie cannot climb up and get their limbs or head stuck inside. We recommend reading this article to find out more: https://heavenlyhedgies.com/fb-what-kind-of-cage-does-a-hedgehog-need . We recommend you to get a large cage because you will need to fit inside a wheel, food and water sources, snuggle sacks, toys, a dig box, possibly a litter box, and other enclosures like an igloo.
Hedgehog Habitat Temperature: We recommended the critter nation cage because it comes with a second level that you can place your heat emitting CHE bulb on. Run your thermostat reader all the way down the middle of the cage to the bottom. The temperature you want it to always read is between 72°F -80°F. Use a space heater and a microwavable heating dish under their sleeping area. The CHE bulb should only emit heat not light and should be placed directly above their sleeping area. Anything colder than we recommend could cause your hedgie to begin hibernation or any warmer than that could cause the opposite of hibernation. Hedgehog Food List: Hedgehogs require Cat Kibble, not hedgehog specific food. We recommend FROMM family Gold or Performatrin Ultra. The protein levels should be 30-33%, fat percentage of 10-13%, and fiber 3-9%. Feed about 1-2 tablespoons of this per night along with live or canned insects, never frozen. Hedgehogs are insectivores, they do not have a cecum so they do not benefit from eating vegetables and fruits. They love insects such as: Dubia roaches, meal worms, wax worms, horn worms, and butter worms. You can gut load your worms however with fruits and vegetables so the insects can digest the nutrients and transform them into ones your hedgie can utilize. Only feed 1-2 of these per night, and insect should always come from a clean source like a breeder or a pet store. You can read more about feeding your hedgehog here: https://heavenlyhedgies.com/fb-hedgehog-safe-food-ideas
Hedgehog Temperament and Sleep Cycle: Hedgies may appear stand offish at first. They take time to warm up to someone and may never warm up to anyone. You just have to accept whatever you get with a hedgehog. But, we have some tips for you to try: https://heavenlyhedgies.com/fb-hedgehog-bonding-helpful-tips-tricks. They are nocturnal and can only be awake during the day for an hour or two, which is when you should do your bonding time. Bonding time can be aided with a bonding scarf, encouraging your hedgie to ran around on your lap, or try to carry them inside your sweater. Hedgehog Life Span and Vet Care Please only purchase hedgehogs from reputable breeders who can provide family history if need be and who warrant against genetic disease known as wobbly hedgehog syndrome or any other disease that could occur. Getting a hedgie from a reputable place will ensure you get a properly socialized hedgehog who should be disease free and live the full 3-7 years. If you are interested in receiving a 25% discount off each vet bill, we have partnered with a company that saves you money at participating vets and veterinary hospitals. It is a popular alternative to hedgehog pet insurance, and it covers every visit for any reason (even pre-existing conditions): http://bit.ly/discount-veterinary-program Hedgehog Health Care and Healthy Weight You should have an exotic veterinarian in mind before taking your hedgie home, because anything can go wrong and fast. The above link can lead you to vets in your area. A hedgehog can weigh between 200 grams and 700 grams give or take once you take them home. Measure at home to make sure whatever weight they are that they are remaining stable. Their bodies should form a tear shape when looked at from the aerial view and they should be able to ball up without having any fatty deposits on their legs. If you notice a lack of appetite, any bumps, constipation, or change in behavior please contact your vet. Quilling Care Hedgehogs will go through quilling at least once in their life around 3 months old. They will be in a lot of pain so oatmeal baths or something safe like that will help hydrate their skin. Use a soft nail brush to help get out any stubborn quills. Make sure there are tiny balls present on the end of quills that have fallen out to make sure it was natural and not mites. Click here to read our article on quilling for symptoms and strategies on how to combat discomfort: https://heavenlyhedgies.com/fb-hedgehog-quilling-symptoms-and-tips Bathing and Nail Grooming They are easy to bathe, just use a natural shampoo and a tooth brush, brushing in the direction of their quills gently. Hedgehogs p**p, p*e, and excrete fluids daily so a bath is recommended often using hydrating solutions such as oatmeal or coconut oil to help hydrate their skin. You don’t always have to use soap, just use water to minimize drying of the skin. To groom their nails, use small nail clippers right in the bath or just after the bath, and hedgie won’t really like this but they shouldn’t protest too much if you firmly hold them and their legs out. You only want to cut the white part, leaving a little bit of it and definitely not touching the pink part. Check out Tori Lynn on YouTube for more excellent guidance on this topic, we adore her.
