Our ‘seasoned sidekicks’ bring so much love and joy into our lives, but just like us, after a while, they can start to feel their age.
As dogs get older, you might notice subtle changes, a little stiffness after a nap, slower walks, or taking extra time to jump onto the sofa or into the car. These could be signs of age-related ailments such as:

🦴 Arthritis could lead to reduced mobility or reluctance to exercise.

🦷 Dental disease

👂 Sensory loss in the form of hearing or vision changes.

❤️ Heart or kidney disease

However, there is good news! Here, at The Vet Equation, we’re passionate about early recognition, consistent veterinary care, and the right daily support. All of which can help your senior pup continue enjoying an active, comfortable life.
This month, take a moment to check in with your vet and show your pup a little extra love (and maybe an extra treat, too!). Why not check out our joint supplements to see if these can help: https://thevetequation.com/en/products/joints-+-mobility-support

Worried about feeding your pup too many processed treats but still want to spoil them? There are some super vegetables that can make tasty, safe treats instead. They’re a great way to add variety, help with enrichment, and make snack time fun!
Here, at The Vet Equation, we love vegetable treat alternatives so have put together a short list of our top ones!
🥕 Carrots: Cut up into small pieces for those over eager pups, or give whole, without the stem, as an alternative chew (under supervision), these are perfect for crunching and gentle on the tummy.
🥒 Cucumber: Always chop up into bite sized chunks suitable for your pup, these can be a cool, refreshing snack.
🥦 Broccoli (in small amounts): nibble-worthy little trees!
🫑 Bell peppers: Make sure to de-seed them and remove the stems first, then they can be a colourful, sweet, and safe treat.
🥬 Green beans: a crunchy low-calorie option.
For extra fun, try hiding pieces around the house or garden for a sniff-and-seek game, or pop them into a food puzzle for even more enrichment.
Always introduce new foods gradually, serve plain (no seasoning, oils, or sauces), and check what’s safe before sharing. If you are concerned about anything, or if your pup is on a specialised diet, please consult your veterinarian for advice.

Halloween is full of fun for humans… but for dogs, it can be a horror show! Here’s what The Vet Equation thinks every pup owner should keep in mind:
🍫 Chocolate & sweets: Delicious for us, dangerous for dogs. Sugar-free treats with xylitol are especially toxic. (Even if they give you “puppy eyes.”)
👻 Costumes: That pumpkin outfit might look adorable, but if it’s tight, itchy, or restricting, it’s a trick, not a treat. A festive bandana could save everyone’s dignity.
🚪 Doorbells & strangers in masks: For many dogs, trick-or-treating is basically a parade of intruders. A calm room, some toys, or background music can help keep things less spooky.
🍬 Dropped goodies: Dogs have a sixth sense for finding fallen sweets. Remember: the floor is not a buffet.
✨ Top tip: Keep human treats well out of reach and reward your pup with dog-safe snacks instead. That way, everyone has a happy (and healthy) Halloween.
Because let’s be honest… the real Halloween horror story isn’t a ghost in the attic, it’s an emergency vet trip after your dog finds the sweet stash. 🐶🎃

12th to 20th of October is Bone and Joint action week. Your pup’s joints are under constant pressure, which is why, after a while, they may need extra support.
Proactive prevention of joint and mobility issues is far more effective than having a reactive approach. Don't wait until joint issues occur before starting to provide your pup with joint protection!
Our supplements contain core building-block ingredients for joint health and may work in the following ways:
🦴 They may help to maintain joint lubrication
🦴 They may support healthy cartilage
🦴 They may support the strength of connective tissue within joints
Always ask your vet for advice if your pup is showing any signs of mobility issues, but then why not check out our supplements 👉 https://thevetequation.com/

If you’re thinking of adding a pup to your family, why not consider adopting from a local shelter. October is ‘adopt a shelter dog’ month and here, at The Vet Equation, we strongly believe in ‘adopt don’t shop!’
There are so many benefits from adopting a dog from a shelter:
🐾 Adopting a pup saves two lives, the pup you take home and the one who gets a spot in the shelter.
🐾 Rescue dogs are known for being incredibly loyal and affectionate toward their adopters.
🐾 Shelters have all breeds, sizes, and ages; from playful puppies to calm seniors.
🐾 Adoption helps reduce demand for irresponsible breeding practices.
🐾 Shelters help match dogs to the right homes, ensuring personalities and energy levels are a good fit.
🐾 Some rescues come house-trained or with basic obedience skills, making the transition easier.
🐾 Adoption fees are usually far less than buying from a breeder, and often include vaccinations, microchipping, and neutering.
Join us in raising awareness of the wonderful shelter dogs by telling us if you rescued your pup and what made it a perfect match?! 👇

Did you know that 29th of September is World Heart Day? Our furry friends rely on strong, healthy hearts to keep them playful, active, and full of love. Just like humans, our pups can face heart issues, that often go unnoticed, which can lead to heart disease. Here, at The Vet Equation, we’ve put together a list of things to watch out for:

🫀️Coughing or difficulty breathing

🫀 Fatigue or slowing down on walks

🫀 Fainting or collapsing

🫀 Swollen belly

If you are worried about any of these issues, please contact your local veterinarian for advice or an appointment.

In the meantime, regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and daily exercise can go a long way in protecting your pup’s heart health! ❤️🐾

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. Our pups can be brilliant at hiding pain, but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel it. Whether it’s arthritis, dental issues, injuries, or chronic conditions; unrecognised pain can greatly affect your pup’s quality of life. Here, at The Vet Equation, we have put together a list of things you can monitor to make sure your pup is living their best life:

🐾 Your pup appears to be ‘slowing down’.

🐾 Any limping or stiffness, in one place or all over?

🐾 Are they showing a reluctance to play, jump, or climb. Do they need lifting into the boot of your car?

🐾 Are they showing any changes in their appetite or sleeping patterns?

🐾 Are they becoming withdrawn or easily irritable?

Please see your local veterinarian if you notice any of these things.

The good news? With early recognition and veterinary care, pain can often be managed, helping our furry friends stay comfortable, active, and happy. This September, let’s spread awareness and give pups everywhere the comfort and care they deserve.

Our pups can’t always tell us when something’s wrong, and urinary issues are often overlooked. From bladder stones and kidney disease to urinary tract infections, urological conditions can seriously impact the health and happiness of your dog. Here, at The Vet Equation, we’ve listed a few things to watch out for:

💧Frequent urination: is your pup desperate to go outside more often?

💧Unusual accidents: is your pup usually a well, toilet trained dog?

💧Straining or pain while urinating: this could be accompanied by a squeak.

💧Blood in the urine: this should prompt a visit to the vet.

💧Excessive thirst: Are you having to refill their water bowl more often than usual?

If you notice these symptoms, please don’t wait! Book an appointment with your local veterinarian. Early detection and care can make all the difference. 🐶

This September, let’s raise awareness and keep our pups healthy, hydrated, and happy!

Here, at The Vet Equation, we have an apology to make. Our chews allow your pup to live their best life, meaning that they can get back to creating as much mischief as possible!

We’ve all seen that look your pup gives, ears back, tail wagging, and a mysterious trail of destruction behind them. 🐾😅
Whether it was a surprise snack from the rubbish bin or an unexpected interior redesign (courtesy of your sofa), dogs have a special talent for keeping us on our toes.

We can only apologise for the hilarious or unexpected scenes you may come home to!

Here, at The Vet Equation, we’ve put together some suggestions to help you and your pup be more eco-conscious:
🐾 Think about upcycling things for your pup – make a toy from an old t-shirt, dog beds from old furniture. Get creative!

🐾 Consider using reusable materials such as reusable potty pads.

🐾 If your dog is a swimmer, consider an oral flea & tick preventative. Spot on preventatives can leach into the environment and affect ecosystems.

🐾 Adopt, don't shop - adopting saves lives, reduces overpopulation and the demand for more resources!

However you choose to make a difference, you can help.

Dogs can be blood donors too. Just like people, sometimes dogs need blood transfusions
This can be due to:
🩸 Emergency Surgery (like a splenectomy)
🩸 Serious injury or trauma (like road traffic accidents)
🩸Acute or chronic illnesses where red blood cell production is affected.
Dogs can be blood donors if they fit into certain criteria. It’s important that they are a certain weight, within a specific age range, healthy, up to date with their vaccinations and not on any medications aside from routine preventatives.
Some veterinary practices create lists of blood donors that they can call in an emergency, so why not contact your local practice to see if your pup fits into the criteria to become a blood donor?
