The fear free approach to training guides you and your pup to build on the bond between you, in a healthy, sustainable way, rather than using aversive techniques.

While both may end up with the same “visible” result, the fear free approach builds genuine behaviours that your pup enjoys doing, which slowly turn into habits. It means supporting them through something they might find fearful or bothersome, and reassuring them that they are able to behave in an appropriate way.

Fear free means recall is successful because they have associated recalling to you with joy and comfort, not because they will be punished if they do not. It’s the difference between a pup not barking because they have realised the stranger entering the house will not bother them, versus the fear of punishment.

It is the difference between a pup knowing they can communicate with you, (through vocalising, moving away, or growling) when they are uncomfortable because they know you will listen versus a pup deciding to shut down due to previous punishments and then escalating into more serious behaviours such as biting without warning.

The fear free approach cares for your pup’s mental health and wellbeing.

At The Vet Equation, we support fear free training and handling, and we partner with organisations that support these values, such as

Our founder of The (Vet Equation) Dr. Jo, qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Cambridge in 2015. Over the years of supporting thousands of pet owners with their pets’ health and keeping up to date with new clinical developments and treatments, Dr Jo’s interest in preventive health care as part of a holistic approach to veterinary care grew.

Dr. Jo recognised a common need among pet parents: they wanted a convenient and reliable source of vet-approved information and products for preventive health care, which is where The Vet Equation was born!

Gut health is important for overall health in your pup. Encouraging ‘good bacteria’ to flourish in the intestines has a positive effect on every part of your pup, including helping to assist a healthy immune system.

If you have a pup with a sensitive digestive system, it may be beneficial to trial prebiotics and probiotics. Talk to your veterinarian first, and if appropriate, consider checking out our P+P Prebiotic and Probiotic chews for gut support! 👉 https://thevetequation.com/en/products/prebiotic-and-probiotic-digestive

Congratulations on your new family member! It’s always exciting bringing a new dog home. The 3-3-3 rule helps break down the process of integrating your new family member into your home. This is how it works. It takes a new dog:

🐾 3 days to decompress - give them their own space and time 😊

🐾 3 weeks to learn about your household routine – and routines are important!

🐾 3 months to build a strong relationship with you – a strong foundation is key to a wonderful bond!

Check out our blog for tips and advice on making this wonderful transition the most exciting it can be. 🔗 https://thevetequation.com/en/blog/%2F3-3-3-rule

Whether you're a slow plodder, a speed walker or gentle ambler, your pup’s walks are not just about getting them out of the house.

The best bonding time between you and your pup can happen out and about. A mental health break can be just as beneficial for your dog as it can be for you. Encouraging them to use their senses and explore their environment can help make a super happy pooch!

So next time that your pup wants to stop to sniff the roses (or any other pet-safe plant!), let them! And watch them enjoy using one of their most delicate senses - we promise it’s worth it!

Joints in your pup’s body are pretty important! They are where bones come together, connected by cartilage, membranes, and joint fluid that allow for physical movement. Joint health is crucial for your dog's mobility and can have a huge impact on their daily wellbeing.

Signs of joint issues can range from subtle to obvious. Obvious signs we all know include limping or yelping when a joint is touched. However, other subtle signs include:

🦴 You’ve noticed your pup is a bit stiff as they get up from the floor/a nap - they take time to “warm up” They may lick at joints that are uncomfortable.

🦴 Their gait, or posture, or the way they sleep can change as they try to choose a position that is more comfortable.

🦴 They’re generally a bit ‘slower’ than they used to be.

If any of these apply, a joint supplement might be worth considering. If joint issues are suspected, consider ‘treating’ your pup to our J+M Joints and Mobility chews for delicious daily joint health support:

Ear infections can be horrible. They are sore, often itchy and can be persistent, leaving you and your pup both feeling frustrated. If your pup suffers from recurrent ear infections, read on to learn some reasons why ear infections can be prone to recurring.

🐶 Your dog may have underlying allergies that need to be addressed (food or environmental)

🐶 There is something predisposing your dog to a dysregulated ear microbiome e.g. floppy ears that trap moisture and humidity making infections more common

🐶 Your dog keeps picking up infections e.g. environmental exposure - swimming in streams/the sea etc.

If you notice your dog scratching a lot, a bad smell coming from the ear, any swelling, redness or anything out of the ordinary, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Sorting out the ear infection and figuring out how to stop them coming back through maintenance or preventative measures will make a world of difference.

The Vet Equation believe that owners need all the facts to be able to give their pups the best in life. Omega-3 is a supplement many people have heard of, but why can it be beneficial for our dogs?

Fish oil is not the same as Omega-3! A higher concentration of Omega-3 is needed to make sure it works effectively than is normally present in fish oil supplements. These benefits can include:
🦴 Supporting natural inflammatory modulation, to help maintain healthy joint function
🧥 Supporting a thick and healthy coat and skin barrier layer
🧠 Maintaining cognitive function into old age

Speak to your vet and check out our Omega 3 chews here 👉 🔗 http://bit.ly/3Q0WJ35

Don’t just take our word for it, our canine testers are advocates for our joint and mobility support supplements too!

Proactive support of healthy joints is always the best way to go. (Plus, they taste great!)

If your dog is:
👉 A breed prone to joint disease or arthritis
👉 A large breed
👉 Very physically active
👉 Mature or over the age of 7
👉 Struggling with mobility issues

If any of these apply to your dog, it’s worth having a check-up with your veterinarian. Then, talk to them about dietary supplementation to help maintain healthy joints. Check it out! 🔗 https://thevetequation.com/en/products/joints-+-mobility-support
