Maine Lab Rescue Maine Lab Rescue is foster based all-breed dog and cat rescue, with a focus on Labs and Lab mixes. We are a foster based rescue, rather than a shelter facility.

Maine Lab Rescue is an all-breed dog and cat rescue, with a focus on Labs and Lab mixes. Animals are rescued from high kill shelters and other undesirable circumstances in the south, vetted and brought to Maine for adoption. The first step in adopting a dog or cat from Maine Lab Rescue is completing and returning an adoption application. Your vet reference(s) are checked and a home visit is schedu

led if applicable. Our adoption fee for a dog located in Maine is $595, Adoption fees can vary if the dog is considered special needs or other circumstances warrant. The adoption fee for a cat or kitten located in Maine is $265. Unless otherwise noted because of age or other medical condition, our dogs and cats are spayed or neutered. Adoptions prior to spay or neuter are considered provisional and become final when the spay or neuter certificate is sent to us. All pets available through Maine Lab Rescue will be current on age-appropriate core vaccines. Adoption fees are non-refundable. For more information and an application, please visit www.mainelabrescue.com/adopt

Please email your completed application to [email protected]

Maine Lab Rescue needs fosters! Fostering a dog or cat saves a life. Foster care consists of providing a safe, loving, temporary home for a dog until a permanent adoptive home can be found. All animals receive a health screening before entering our program. We provide veterinary care, and guidance. You provide the love, training and home. The dog or cat provides you with love, joy, and the satisfaction of having helped save a life. Young adult dogs, puppies and kittens are arriving in the coming weeks and will need foster homes while they await adoption. Foster commitments are generally 1-3 weeks for most, though sometimes longer. Fosters should be located within a 45 to 60 minute drive of Windham, ME. For more information or a foster application, please email [email protected]

19/08/2023

After more than 11 years rescuing, providing care and finding homes for more than 5500 dogs and cats, we have made the difficult decision to cease rescue operations by mid-September of this year. The pandemic and the ensuing economic conditions have brought many challenges to the rescuing and sheltering world, both in Maine and across the entire country. After much consideration of those and other factors over the last several months, we have concluded ceasing operations is the best course of action for our organization. While this was not an easy decision, we feel it is necessary.

We are incredibly proud of and extremely grateful for all of our fosters who offered love and temporary shelter, both here in Maine and in Georgia and Alabama. We are also incredibly indebted to our many additional volunteers who transported these animals from the shelters to safety and to those who offered time and talent to assist with daily operations. As a foster based rescue saving these animals would not have been possible without these extraordinary individuals and we will always consider our fosters and volunteers the backbone of our Maine Lab Rescue family.

To our donors and supporters all over the country, you allowed us to rescue and bring hope and health to animals who were sick, injured and, in many cases, unlikely to see another day. We could not have done this without your kind words, generous donations, assistance sharing our posts and your prayers.

To the many veterinarians, spay neuter clinics, and their caring staff, both in New England as well as in Georgia and Alabama, we are deeply grateful to you for helping our animals become healthy and ready for adoption.

To the small handful of partner rescues, primarily in Puerto Rico and Mississippi, that we have worked with over the years, thank you for entrusting us with the continued care and placement of the dogs and cats you worked so hard to save and send to Maine. We are incredibly humbled that you chose to work with us.

To the transporters who routinely brought our dogs and cats to Maine from Southern states, you were and will continue to be one of the very important bridges between life and death for all rescued animals. We know it isn’t easy work and we salute you for all you’ve done to get these pups and kitties north for the next step of their journey.

Heartfelt thanks to those who have graciously let us host adoption events over the last 11 years at their establishments, allowing us to showcase and adopt out our available pets.

And especially to our adopters, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are the reason we have been able to save so many lives. Without you welcoming new companions into your homes we would not have been able to offer any of these animals a chance to live, love and find places in your hearts. A great number of our MLR families have adopted multiple dogs and cats from us over the years and, when asked, many have also stepped up to become fosters for us. You are all amazing families.

At this time, we have completely ceased intake and are working now to place Faye, the one MLR pup still looking for her own family. Please share her photo to help us find just the right home for her. Faye’s adoption fee is fully sponsored.

Faye is a good girl, but, is she a perfect dog? The answer is, like many dogs, no. But we do not think a dog has to be perfect, to be a great companion.

Faye loves her people and foster fursiblings and cousins. She is housetrained, good in the house (with minimal dog proofing), walks well on a leash, loves her chew toys and a good nap on the couch. Faye dislikes, or perhaps more accurately, really likes to chase and harass small animals such as squirrels, chipmunks, cats, birds, bugs, bees or butterflies. Faye’s new family should be cat and small critter free.

Faye can also be reactive, and we’ve found that her biggest trigger right now is children, which is why she will only be placed in an adult only home.

Faye’s ideal forever home would also include another dog (or dogs) with parents who are knowledgeable about fear behavior and reactivity issues in dogs, and who are also willing to work with her to address these issues.

Faye is a smart and sensitive pup, who, despite her reactivity, does like to go new places and experience new things. She is both cautious and curious.

Faye’s foster mom believes she would be able to form and enjoy relationships with other dogs outside her home, given proper introductions. She also feels that with time, training and patience, Faye can meet and greet and happily coexist with non-family members, perhaps even children.

UPDATE: Faye has been adopted. ♥️♥️

While the news of our closing will bring sadness to many hearts, please know that your stories, photos of adventures and the love that we have all shared as MLR family are a strong testimony to our shared love of animals and the desire to rescue and adopt those in need. The need to Rescue, Rehome and Repeat does not end when we close our doors. It is our fervent hope that you continue to support animal rescues, shelters and animals in need. We encourage you to consider fostering, volunteering, donating and supporting them any way you can. They and the animals need you more now than ever. They are counting on you.

Much love and eternal gratitude,
Erlene, Deb and Stacey

Patience is a 4 month old mixed breed female pup. Mom is a medium sized pitbull, we have no information on the dad or dads to her litter so we are unsure of the rest of her mix. She is current on age appropriate core vaccinations and is already spayed. She is a sweet, happy and affectionate pup who is good with the dogs and children in her foster home, and is respectful of the cats. We think the she will be medium size as an adult, however it isn’t possible to know for sure. She currently weighs about 20 lbs.

As a reminder, to be considered for adoption, you must first submit a completed application for approval. Applications will only be accepted if all of the dogs and cats in your home are current on their core vaccinations and they are also already spayed or neutered. For more information and to download an application, please visit: www.mainelabrescue.com/adopt. If you have an approved application or have submitted an application in recent weeks, please email [email protected] to let us know of your interest in this pet.

Faye is a 10.5 month old female pup, thought to be a terrier/lab mix, . She's current on age appropriate core vaccinations and is already spayed. Her foster mom says she's a sweet, playful girl who is very, very active, loves to snuggle, but loves food above all else. Faye likes to walk and does well on leash. She is generally good in a crate. Faye is good with other dogs, but does pester cats, squirrels and the like. Though Faye can be reactive to other dogs and people while on leash or in a puppy pen at adoption events, and it can take a bit to warm up to other dogs and people, she has been generally been good with people after a bit and with the other dogs she's been fostered with. She will need a home without cats and other small critters. Faye has not been fostered with children of any age, we recommend an adult only home for her. She currently weighs about 55 lbs. Lia’s adoption fee is fully sponsored.

Lia is a female pup about 7.5-8 months old, likely pitbull terrier and lab mix. She’s current on age appropriate core vaccinations and is already spayed. She is a sweet, snuggly pup, active, playful and exuberant. And working manners, she’s doing a great job with sit and lay down. Lia has been great with all the other dogs she’s been fostered with, loves playing with humans and other dogs, but can settle down well when needed. She entertains herself nicely with a hard chew toy. A cat free home for Lia is a must. She enjoys the outdoors and playing with other dogs. Lia is house trained and crate trained, and seems to enjoy her crate for overnight sleeps. We recommend any children in her new home be over the age of 12 as she can be a little nervous around younger children. Lia weighs about 40 lbs.

Foster is a 3 month old mixed breed male pup. Mom is a medium sized pitbull, we have no information on the dad or dads to this litter so we are unsure of the rest of their mix. He is current on age appropriate core vaccinations and is already neutered. The pups in this litter are sweet, happy and affectionate pups. Thus far in their short lives, they have not been introduced to dogs or cats and some are just meeting children for the first time. Though we can’t say for sure, they are likely to do well with other dogs and probably with children and cats. The pups in the Glory Days litter are in the 9-13 lb range. We think the pups will be medium size as adults, however it isn’t possible to know for sure. There were 13 pups in the litter, which typically results in smaller puppies that can take longer to catch up weight wise. As can happen with large litters, three puppies did not survive.

Glory, mama to this litter, is expected to join us here in Maine once she completes her required vetting and is spayed. Her photos will be posted in comments, two of the photos were taken about 10 days before she gave birth and one soon after the last pup was born.
